The hike to goods at Alpine were great yesterday - definitely a work out for your legs with that kind of snow. Went over to Squaw around noon just in time for the upper mountain opening... and it was okay. Shirley had a massive slide across it that took out a few trees and the snow was decidedly worse (even where it didn't slide) than next door.

Some decent turns to be found below Siberia even late in the day if you were up for the shitty traverse from the top of gold coast. Really wish they had spun Big Blue to relieve the line at Gold Coast and for people going over to Shirley - wasn't that the whole point of installing that lift? Anyway, great base - amazing how much one big storm can change things.

started off yesterday hiking out by the spur at kirkwood. it was misting 2/3 of the way to the top. stilll it was a great run with only a zipper crust near the bottom. then went inbounds and by that point it had become very warm. even the never-see-sun exposures had developed a thick skin and the skiing was meh but jumping off things was still fun. then hiked back up dangberg at 2:45 only to struggle down with a 3" hard crust covering everything. hopefully the sun will burn through it today

Stoked on the cement. I'll be back in 2-3 weeks. So we just need a topping refresher for my next visit.
This is why I drive a 4wd truck, heck even my wife's Honda element will go thru 12"-14" of snow no problem. Let's build a awd car with no ground clearance, yeah!

plus I won't have to spend 3k to replace the tubo at 100k.

I've chained up my AWD vehicles on hills because of ice, not snow.

That's what studs are for. I don't think ice was a problem in this last storm, no matter how some of the resorts tried to use that as a excuse not to turn lifts, But I do know what you mean if you live far, far, far, away.

No ice. Slush. I was at the low end of the street and it seemed like the snow/slush flowed down there and created a deep pool. While I was pushing a little snow, the car never got high ended, so clearance was not really the issue, although I'd much prefer a bit more clearance. And the amount of high way miles that car gets, I don't really want any more lift. I guess that I don't really mind having to put the chains on every once in 8.5 years. But I sure was cursing the car out when I was pulling chains out of the boot.

Can someone please post up some stoke. Geez. The way landings were so money over the weekend, I'm sure someone must have some pics of hits. Maybe uber pure local BGNight has something to share.

Quick tour up Tahoe Donner this morning revealed a very strong frozen layer at the top of the snowpack. 4-5in of frozen snow above the rest of the storm snow. Only about 1/4 to 1/2in of snow above the crust, although it was warming quickly and the top of the crust was getting softer. Almost 0 ski penetration on the skin up and ride down. Pit dug revealed total snowpack depth of 120cm (48in), similiar depth at 7k by the water tower. Warm, wet snow existed below the crust all the way down to the ground, with several different density layers throughout. Substantially less snow cover even 500ft lower. Great base layer overall. Hard to ski due to crazy runnels. Fairly entertaining regardless.

I saw more high speed wipe-outs yesterday than I have in a long time. Had a couple myself in run-outs / landing areas at Alpine that are normally nice and even but not so much right now. The way this storm came in with so much rain has really made some of the terrain completely different than I've seen it before.

    Yup!

I experienced 3"-6" deep slush "driving" up 88 midnight Saturday. Slipperier than snot. I will take frozen, grippy, icy, or plain deep snow blizzard chasing, over slushy any day. I was pushing 15-25mph on a straight section and I still managed to pitch the car by merely letting off the gas a bit. I had so little traction, 1st gear and Blizzaks nearly didn't get me up the grade coming out of Silver Lake to the Carson Spur. I wish I had put the chains on...

I also have no stoke to post but I can report one of the better lift line snowball fights I've ever seen while we waited 2 hours yesterday for 6 to open to ski my namesake.

I almost got killed at Rose today.
Just before The Chutes opened, I took one last run down Northwest. As I was cutting over to Bullwhip, a snowboard went flying by, I got a face full of spray but near miss. The board augered in, I looked up the hill but didn't see anyone it could've belonged to.
Fucking scary! I can't stop thinking about it.

Other than that, The Chutes had a partial opening, Beehive on down, it was bony as expected but ski'd pretty well where it hadn't slid during the storm. Sure was nice to get back in there, I had my doubts that would even happen the way this winter has been.

You should have had coop and ski patrol push that water/slush out with a plow to as payback for how slow they got the lifts going on Sunday/Monday.

Ok, I have to ask. Does anyone have a pair of skis I can have? Preferably Bent Chetlers or something of similar specs? I blew out my ski today, and there is no chance for repair-its toast. I don't have a lot of money right now, something about trying to be a ski bum, but I will try my best to make up for it. I'm willing to post stoke in this forum, work in a shop, help press skis, wash dishes, trade jokes, show you my stash, or even go pro for a pair of sticks. They don't even have to be in good condition, or have good bases (you should see the old skis), just as long as I can mount them up and go tour.
    Thanks

Found variable conditions today...big surprise! S, E, and SE aspects were marred by a very strong hard layer up high. Lower down it was mush. Good times.

The good news is that N and NE aspects way up high were decent windbuff and compacted powder. It was a good day, if a little challenging for my first day out on the new knee.

We dug a couple of pits and found very easy releases at about 20cm and 40cm. Not exactly confidence inspiring, but the snow above these layers was consolidated enough that we didn't find them, and we stayed out of areas with lots of triggers and weak points.

I suspect that the highest N and NE faces will hold up for another day or two, but the sun exposed stuff will be even worse, and today was no joke. It was worth 4 runs, though...

    Cheerio.

I don't get your point, except maybe your a butthurt bayarea butt burner, I loved living in Minnesota till I was 13, we lived on a lake 5 min. from buckhill ski area, when my folks got sick of the cold weather they moved to Ventura, a block from the water, talk about a culture shock, where I lived or 20 years till 1995, then moved up to Tahoe.

And yes I do think Mammoth is the best resort mountain in the state, less bayarea shit show and dentists. BAHAAAAAAA!!!

    So Cheerio. butthurt....

Hey Will - saw you hollering while skiing down D-8 on my second lap up Summit yesterday (couldn't miss your jacket / pants combo). I've got some original 2012 Blizzard Cochise in 185cm that I'm thinking of selling since I've fallen pretty hard for my ON3P Jeffrey's that are about the same size. They're in decent shape with about 40 or so days on them. Drilled for 296 BSL with marker griffons. Any interest? Not sure how much I'd get for them at this point and figured some good skier karma is never a bad idea. Buy me a beer at the lodge if you really want them - not quite bent chetler dimensions.
