Heard the football field under the Saddle ripped to the ground...with tons of tracks in and out of the zone...

Indeed! Props the the great job BBSP does.

The guys at GNFAC seemed a little irritated about the situation - mainly from the amount of traffic in the slide zone. I remember seeing basically the same area go a couple years back, and I think it took a girl for a ride, but she survived.

how would you feel if you present the general public with a very clear and easily unerstood forumla for avoiding avalanche terrain.. and hundreds of people are either too engrossed in their own worlds to pay attention.. or worse- pay attention, then proceed to do the opposite.

im happy to say i fit in the category of riders that has not gone thru the south gates this season. plan to keep it that way. something about getting slid over 200 ft cheese graters keeps me away.

I'm in agreement with you. I'm ALWAYS on the conservative side of the decision making curve in pretty much all aspects of my recreational life. Live to play another day. 'Sides...I'm getting too old to bounce back from injury the way I once did...

Be safe out there. Hope to see some of you guys in Feb/Mar time frame.

We heard you in our twilight caves, one hundred fathom deep below, for notes of joy can pierce the waves, that drown each sound of war and woe.

and this. I'm always amazed that no matter the conditions or the advisory, people shlep on out to Saddle like lemmings. And yet, it slides every year, often multiple times. I'm glad BBSP did what some mouth-breather bro brah would have done on his own.

In other news, I leave for a weekend for Gordy Camp and SW MT gets hammered with snow. You're welcome. I'll try to leave town more often. On the plus side, I had a chance to ski with Todd Ligare ... so I have that going for me, which is nice.

Just spoke to a friend up at Teton Pass near Choteau, MT. He said they got almost two feet of snow last week.

I saw that. Shitty. Might make for a beer-ski-beer-ski-beer day this weekend at Big Skree.

Avy awareness lecture at Mystery Ranch tonight at 6pm: http://www.outsidebozeman.com/skills...alanche-safety

When in the Tragic City, your only option is really Red Lodge for lift-served. Otherwise, I'm sure you can find plenty of AT options off the highway just past RL in the Beartooths.

Holy crap this thread makes me realize how lame my handle is.

    Glad I found it tho!

Anyone around here venture north? Lincoln, Belts, Elkhorns areas? Tough to find beta on snowpack, public access, etc. I've got a few areas scouted out but looking to expand my close-to-home options. There's some skiing to be had...if you can get to it.

Nothing specific to share. Several pages back, Bunion (I think) shared a Google Earth overlay of all of the SnoTel sites in Montana. That will get you started, but it won't give much in the way of avy forecasts; just historical snowfall data.

not sure where those physically are in the state.. if theyre closer to the swan/ flathead ranges.. flatheadavalanche.org is your friend. (less frequent updates than mac or gnfac it seems).

if theyre closer to the bitterroot.. missoulaavalanche.org is what youre lookin for.

There's pretty much no forecasting that covers our area as far as avalanches are concerned. I read the GNFAC emails every day. When I head up the Swan I check in with Flathead, and if I'm in the BRoot, MAC. But there's no avalanche center that covers central Montana, Rocky Mountain Front, etc. That's why I'm looking to locate other folks who ski those areas so we can share beta from our outings. It'd just be good to know what others are seeing in those areas. They don't get the high use that the Gallatin or Bitterroot or even Swan Ranges see so learning about what's going on with the snowpack is kind of "as you go," which isn't ideal.

Here's a shot from last April near Lincoln.

Geography education in this country has certainly degenerated in the past 20 years.
or maybe its the fact that there are probly 40 or so ranges in the state..

If you have access to a snowmobile, there's a couple of bowls by Stemple. It's off the road several miles heading up to Stemple and hardly anyone goes there.

Red mountain (just south of Helena) by chessman, nevada ridge (black mountain) edith/baldy, crow, elkhorn peak and stemple are all places Ive frequented this winter so far. Ive yet to see any natural activity in these places, but pits dug have yielded a few unstable layers. If you're ever interested in getting out to some our local helena spots shoot me a pm, always lookin for capable touring partners.
