UDOT plans to do control work in Little Cottonwood on February 23, 2012 at 7 am. A closure is in effect for terrain north of the canyon road from Closure Gate B through Grizzly Gulch until 8:30 am.
    Thanks,
    Brad

    Agreed. Solid charging right there.

Anyone have any details about the LCC natural that buried the road near Gate B? That's the lowest road burial I can recall, scary.

Yeah, I saw that reported on KSL earlier. I just racked it up to KSL's shooting-from-the-hip reporting style rather than an actual event. I'd be curious to hear details, if something did hit the road at B Gate

SALT LAKE COUNTY — Little Cottonwood Canyon was closed because of an avalanche that covered the road overnight. Crews conducted avalanche control before reopening the canyon Thursday morning.

The avalanche broke loose in the Alta area, about two miles up the canyon, just past the Bravo Gate, or the B Gate, around 1 a.m. It covered the road, forcing emergency responders to shut the canyon and enforce inter-lodge restrictions in Alta Township and at Alta and Snowbird ski resorts, meaning guests have been asked to stay in their rooms.

Because this avalanche occurred in the early morning, crews initially could not determine exactly how wide it is. They did not believe anyone was trapped in it. There was no traffic in the area at the time and no vehicles parked along the road or at the trail heads indicating anyone in the backcountry.

Sgt. Corey Latham of the Unified Police Department said, "Snowbird and Alta being destination resorts, they've always got a lot of people up there. So Unified Police Department has one of its officers up there spending the night, as we typically do in these situations, to augment the individuals up there and to help out and maintain communications."

At first light crews began removing the slide from the road and are doing some avalanche control in the canyon. That includes shooting explosive rounds to see just how loose the snowpack is in other potentially dangerous areas.

The canyon reopened just before 9:30 a.m.

Nothing happened at the Bravo Gate. Gotta love our local media that sometimes doesn't even know where LCC or BCC is let alone reporting with any level of correct detail about either canyon

Perhaps Brad Davis will feel compelled enough to come back on later this afternoon and elaborate a bit more like he did througout last year. I can grease the old wheel a little by saying control work this morning was productive, to say the least

    Well Xover,
KSL got it right, The snow cover was "loose".
Besides the big naturals in Superior (open) and White Pine (closed); we got 2 pockets in Little Sup to hit the road and even go as far as the creek. In addition, a shot in Hellgate Bowl ripped out through East Hellgate and that hit the road too. Other slides of note: A good class 3 from a shot in white pine filled the China Wall, leaving branches and powder blast debris on the road. Little Pine within 60' of the road. White pine 1 and 2 ran 3/4 track. Maybird and Tanners ran 3/4 track as well. Toledo ran to the summer road. That's what we can see.

    Other news:

UDOT is planning on doing avalanche control work in Big Cottonwood Canyon on Friday the 24th of February 2012.
Closures will be in effect for Cardiff Fork, Kessler Peak, Argenta, Broads Fork and Stairs Gulch; from 12:00 am to 9:00 am.
Road Closure will be from 8:00 to approx 8:30.

    Thanks,

    Brad.

    Mother. Fucking. Weather.

The rime, graupel, and 18% snow have just done wonders for our already stellar snowpack. So stoked right now.

    that is all.

I am starting to think the only cure for the current snow pack is August.

Hoping and praying for the victim of the Dutch Draw slide.

A witness reported the slide about 3 p.m. after watching it carry away one person who was outside of the resort boundaries, near the peak known as Ninety-Nine 90, Bridge said. The man was swept into Dutch Draw, a basin to the southeast of the resort.

He was buried about one hour when rescuers found him just after 4 p.m.

Searchers do not yet believe others were caught in the slide, he said.

That's a lot of scary, high-consequence stuff coming down. Now that they've run so far, does that give them more bed surface to slide further down? Think we'll be seeing slide paths lengthening this year? Yikes.

Can't even walk by West Monitor without triggering an avalanche. Once again no cornices molested today, there getting big and scary. Remote from about 90ft away.

Good skiing at 9,000ft, east facing, 28-30 degrees in AF. Lots of collapsing on the skin up. 4-5" of new with the first two inches of that being graupel, sitting on a stout crust of 1" over the most recent storm.

The Hellgate-Superior show was impressive, especially the Hellgate bowl-East Hellgate, in one shot slide.
It filled the canyon bottom with dust cloud for a few minutes.

We are might be taking a road trip to SLC to ski, coming from Tahoe. Do any of you wasatch Maggots have reccomendations for Wasatch specific weather forcast sites? Or should we just go to Jackson Hole?

That is a real softball, the best forecasting is by the Utah Avalnche Center, look at their daily update, at the very bottom.

On the UAC page on the report there is a photo I'm interested in what was used to take this. Anyone know if this is an app for a smart phone (iPhone, Android), or the name of the equipment? Thanks -
