^^ How much of that smooth, soft looking blur (especially in the foreground) is from post and how much is from the lens? I recently picked up a 50 1.4 and am still playing around with what it can do, mind sharing your info from this one?

    Love the shot btw.

While waiting for UPS to deliver my Canon 50mm f/1.4 tonight, I'm looking back through the shots I got with the rented 50/1.4 a few weeks ago...

Thanks. If you click on the photo you can see all the EXIF data in Flickr. The key was getting the camera down on the ground to take advantage of the DOF of the scene. All I did in post was play a bit with the colors. All the blur was from the lens.

Moonset this morning over Longs Peak in RMNP. Thanks to Powtron for sending me a text to let me know it was there... I was otherwise still in bed.

In anticipation of this weekend's storm, I was going through some of my shots from last winter...

Maybe it's just the dark TGR background, but the picture looks more saturated on FB than on here. You do have a great view. Tried any full-moon or moonset shots in the middle of the night?

Started a 365 project. Good excuse to try out something different, like collages...

nice night for a walk last night ... probably a good candidate for focus tilt effect processing?

    diggin' it Alex,

maybe a crop from the right as that big, black portion doesn't add much, though I can appreciate including as much fog as possible. That way half dome is a little less centered and there'll be plenty of fog to appreciate.

    YMMV.

As far as fake tilt-shifting, I like her how she stands. It'd be neat to see it.

I'm guessing it's just FB's photo algorithms at work. The FB pics I post are sized for 1000px, and the ones on Photobucket are uploaded at "full res" (this one was cropped a decent amount). You never know what you're going to get on Facebook when you post pictures.

thanks for the comments C. Just a quick clarification: "big black" because it's really dark, or because you can't see any shadow detail in there at all? There is actually a little bit of color and shadow detail in the rocks on the right, just not that much at all.

Unfortunately my camera ran out of batteries after this exposure, so I couldn't capture a sharper version! Pulling focus in the middle of the night is damn hard. LiveView doesn't work for beans and the camera viewfinder can't see anything - even the bright lights in the background weren't really showing up in LiveView. I had to manually focus on a car-headlight as it was driving through via LiveView, but then the temperature dropped and I wasn't even sure what I was focusing on at f/5.

I actually like the dark edges -- creates a nice frame. And it would be a shame to lose the lone light in the fog at lower right.

In low light, why not focus at wide open aperture, and then stop down to the desired aperture for shooting?

yeah, I'm not sure how that works in live view, if it only stops down for the exposure or presents the image as stopped down???
