Took up a new sport this summer and UCL dragged me out to this ugly place today

I've never really deal with exposure like this before ... only 500 more feet to the top from here!

My real question is, do any of you nutcases bring your SLRs on trad climbs? I need to figure out how Jimmy Chin does it. I don't mind the weight ... really, I don't! I just don't want to break the damn thing!

another cool thing about that Church World photo is the patch of dry grass looking like a continent, like an distorted South America connected to another continent.

I've found you've got to be pretty lucky (either that, or a heck of a lot more skilled than me) to catch these guys in flight. They flit around so quickly there's no way AF can keep up--not to mention they are so small. This one was nice enough to hold steady long enough for me to get off one good shot and one blurry shot! I bet I was no more than 10 feet from the hummingbird. One positive is they are very territorial so if you are out near their feeders they let you know they aren't happy about it and will dive bomb you.

    Cool. Thanks for posting that.

A good trick is to put your camera on a tripod, aim it at your feeder (or flower) and set it to MF and a medium aperture (F/5.6-6.3). Then run your cable release or remote trigger to a place where you can hide and wait. After a while the birds get used to the camera and then you can fire off a bunch of quick frames before the birds spook at the sound of the cam. I usually set it at max FPS then spray and pray.

Glenn Bartley is the absolute MASTER at hummingbird photography. His work is SICK..

^^^ I have no idea how you even BEGIN to get a shot like that. (My guess is trap focus on a tripod. I know he uses strobes, but I haven't figured out how he places them).

You're right. Amazing stuff! Thanks for the tip. I've got a remote trigger so I'll have to try it out. I really want to get some good shots of them at flowers rather than the feeder, but haven't been successful yet.
