Give us a budget... Ciener makes decent stuff, but has a shitty reputation. Don't count on getting anything from him in a timely fashion.

I would lean toward a 1911 and add a .22 kit. If Jack is no problem, get a nice STI 1911, then add a Marvel Precision .22 upper on it. Check out www.dawsonprecision.com for 1911's.

Bob, dont think about whether you want either a 22 or a 45, you need both. If you get a 45, ammo is so expensive you will NEED a 22.

Just happens that I have a browning buckmark for sale in sandy, $200 reliable, accurate, few scratches on the barrel but not beat, two 10 rnd mags. I have a case and manual too, but theyre in colorado.

Even if you arent interested in mine, I'll add that since you are fond of 1911's the browning will probably be a better choice than the ruger, they are both good, its just personal preference, but the buckmarks have similar ergonomics and identical controls to a 1911.

I love this thread.

Question for Ken, Jer and company:

I want a general purpose "ranch" rifle...something with iron sights (or I'll add them), either semi or bolt action that's fun to shoot and easy to maintain. It has to be affordable and fire relatively affordable ammunition.

My list so far:

Marlin lever action .357 (I own a .357 handgun so the simplicity in ammo is appealing, plus I love lever action).

Savage .223 111 FCNS

CZ 527 .223

Any suggestions?

I had the pleasure of firing a few rounds of 45-70 a while back with a Marlin Guide Gun. Incredible, but fuck is that an elephant gun. A little intimidating. Nice compact format though with big lever loop for gloved hands. Popular with Alaskan big gamers and ski patrollers.

It's all relative. I wouldn't put a 12 power scope on it and expect to behead groundhogs at 300 yards but for iron sight shooting out to 100 yards I think you'd be fine. Google mini 14 accuracy, there are plenty of people out there claiming to get sub moa past 200 yards. Supposedly Ruger changed something in the manufacturing a while back that made big improvements.

They can be accurate. I had one that was moa. They do however have a thin barrel that heats up quick, so they are not accurate if you plan on runnign lots of rounds through them quick, but for a ranch rifle, you shouldnt need to. They are lightweight, durable, reliable little rifles.

They used to be real cheap. I bought mine for $350 i think 5 years ago, and sold it for $750 about a year ago. For $750 they are just not worth it, imo.

For $750 you could get one of the better made AK variants which would be just as accurate with a cold bore and a lot better once heated up.

Have a mini 14, best I ever got was an 8" group at 100 yards. If a mini 14 is at $750 right now, buy a nice AR-15.

If you like a lever action, a 30-30 has probably killed more deer than everything else put together. Tried and true performance.

A similar option to the .357 is is the ruger .44 Magnum carbine.

Damn, the new 1895GBL is niiiiiiice. My brother has an older 1895 that I absolutely love. That bigger lever loop would be nice though.

I have a stainless mini 14 with a 3x9 nikon on it. I get 2.5-3 inch groups at 100 yards. I can't say I really love the gun, but I have no reason to part with it. I like accurate guns, and a high power scope on a mediocre accuracy high capacity rifle is oxymoronic. After I burn up a couple of ammo cans of shells I might sell it.

Float, why don't you build yourself an AR-15? Fun little project.

Pick up a lower receiver for under $100, then add the trigger parts, stock, and upper, and you're ready to go. Online instructions on how to put the parts kit in the lower. Couple of nights and a few beers for my first attempt.

Thanks, Ken. This is actually more interesting than you might expect, mainly because I love mechanics, building stuff and knowing how everything works. I will definitely investigate this possibility.

One of our military folks here suggested a Remington 700 .223 in the youth package. Then accessorize.

Might try these guys too. This is the trade-in grade AR-15.

And you can't beat a Rem. 700 action. I have had some that shoot sub-moa out of the box, but had a Police Sniper Special that was, at best, 1" at 100 yards. It went away for work. Check the local papers. As hard up as folks are these days, there are a ton of guns on the market, cheap.

When the US and third world countries quit shooting at each other and the supply frees up. Right now, much of the military ammo being made by Federal/Lake City is headed overseas. Or that's the story.

The other story is that the Kenyan's policies on gun control do not focus on the weapon themselves, but drying up the available supply of ammunition.

I just want to say thank you to a police chief that didn't like Sig 229's. Because of your love for Glocks I was able to pick up a LEO trade in .40 229 with three mags for just over $500.

Who ever owned it first didn't even shoot it enough to rub any finish off the barrel, or bother wiping off the factory oil. First time out I was getting groups at 12 yds, that where the best I have ever shot. I LOVE this gun.

Great pick up on the 229!!! That thing retails for like a grand.

I have been looking at P250 Compact, but there is no way I can spend that kind of money until they actually have the modules produced to change calibers.....

And my XD .45 ACP is $$$$$$

Ive been shooting alot of 9mm and .22 due to prices. But I put a box of .45 through my kimber at the range last week and that thing feels like im firing bowling balls.

Serious stopping round.
