i'm in canuckistan and noone imports them on a regular basis and shipping from Volquartsen/Brownells/rimfiresports can be a pain
was just looking to ease my pain

oh yeah 338 Lapua all the way, if enough people by my barely used demos i'm getting a PGW Timberwolf (dreaming but it could happen)

Man that sucks. For some reason I thought you were in the UP.

Most people say if I'm gonna blow that kind of money on a rifle I should just go with the .338 Lap, but I can't get over the huge discrepency in cost between .308 brass (even nice Lapua brass) and .338 Lap Mag brass. One plus is that if I brought a 42 (with the brake) to a public range it would probably drive away all the quad-rail commando freaks that always seem to want to talk my arm off.

i get the brass/ammo cost but think about the "evil baby killer shoot through schools" capability of the round
and really you don't go to the range with stuff bigger than 308 and shoot lots of rounds...

The Colt Gold Cup National Match collection is impressive to say the least.
We bought well so there MAY be some wiggle room.

TRG 22 is .308 which is really all I need around here. Most shots are about 800 meters max. The recoil of a .308 is not bad. Plus my AR-10 is .308, although I would probably be using a different load.

    But..

The TRG 42 is .338 Lapua Mag (not interested in .300 Win Mag) and I could shoot the balls off a horsefly at 3 miles. But .338 brass is like $250 per 100. And I like shooting a lot so this would probably make me very poor. Plus there are very few places around here that range out past 1000 meters. Then again, .338 Lapua is new and exotic and exciting. I wish Sako would sell the 22 chambered in 260 Rem or 300 WSM.

Anyhow - at least I know I'll be putting a Nightforce NXS on it. And a Harris bipod - I can't imaging the Sako bipod being $400 better.

So - 22 or 42 - what do you fellows think?

    Ken?
Depends on how far you can shoot. A .338 is pretty much a waste under 400 yards. Expensive to buy loaded, about $6.00 a pop. I bought a box of 20 factory Lapua a little while back for $95 and was happy. Reloading is better, but not by a lot. And components aren't lying around everywhere either.

If this is your first real serious distance gun, get the 22 in .308 and learn on it. Components cheaper, readily available. Factory ammo is about $1.00 a round for Federal Gold Medal match in 168 grain. Then step up to the .338.

Option 2. Buy my 42!! Seriously.

Took the words right out of my mouth. One showed up today on a local gun list, but I don't start my next project for a week or so, and don't have the funds right now, damn damn damn.

I have a S&W 1076 that was a former state police gun (I think). Great cartridge. HEAVY gun.

I have always wanted a Delta Elite. And guess what, Colt is making them again.

Hey dumbass - since your .22/250 has < 400 rounds before the throat totally goes to shit, why don't you just get that badboy rebarreled in .260 Rem (by Krieger - right down by Milwaukee) and get everything all trued up nice. Then get rid of the Nikon scope that you really don't like and throw a Loopy LR/T on there. You'd have a rad shooter that you already know you love that will shoot flatter than your .308 and reach out a little farther as well. And .250 loads can't be any more difficult to dial in than .22/250. Think about it, doofus.

Had the chance to purchase the one used in Predator a few years back. Complete gun and tons of extra parts. Sold for a mere $115k.

With my first UT hunting season creeping up, I'm looking at putting together a new bolt action for pronghorn to elk sized game. I'm particularly interested in Remington 700 CDL's chambered in .257 WBY Mag and .264 Win Mag like this one. I've researched enough to know these are great calibers for what I want to do with them, but are they a worthwhile investment for someone who has yet to break into the hand loading scene?

I have a custom 264 that shoots well. Only about 150 rounds through it. It is a great reloading cartridge..Very easy to reload, and shoot. If you are interested let me know. I will let it go for 600.00 . 850.00 4 1/2X 14 Leopold scope, already sighted in. It is a true 3/4 inch shooting rifle. Mark 10 action, trued, and a premium Pac-Nor barrel. Not sure about the stock, it is either McMillan, or Lone Wolf. It is pillar bedded, and ready to hunt. Assembled by Pac-Nor. I could give you reloading data for it, so you won't even have to worry about load work up.
Both of these rifles will shoot, and feed better than nay factory rifle you will find. Scope mounts, and scopes on both will run you from 400.00-600.00
    Green rifle is 264
Black is 257 weatherby with Weaver 4 1/2 X14 700.00, it has a few scratches on triggerguard. Lothar-Walther barrel, Mcmillan stock, assembled by a good gunsmith near home. Shoot real well 1/2-3/4" groups

I guess those are great calibers but .308 and .30-06 have been killing game and shooting flat for years and can be shot for less than 50 cents a round. Your probably looking north of 2 dollars a round for the .257 or .264. Maybe not a consideration for you.

ZZZ - I am in complete agreement with you, but I do enjoy a bit of uniqueness in firearms/calibers.

LeeC - What are the barrel lengths on your rifles?

Any thoughts from the gun collective?

Mine shoots sub-MOA. It's modified, but still the same barrel/reciever/bolt.
The stock trigger absolutely sucks. I run a JP (about 3 1/4 lb) in mine. There are also many drop-in triggers available. You'll also want to polish out the edges on the mags, otherwise they sometimes have feed problems. Other than those two very minor things (I mean - how many production rifles don't need trigger work) you can't go wrong.

    right -

I hunt with these, so to keep weight down, I believe they are 24".
I agree that a 308, 30-06 has been killing stuff for years, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with them, but a 257, or a 264 cost no more to reload than any other standard caliber, as long as you have the brass. Brass can be reloaded many times, and if you stay with safe pressures can be reloaded 10-15 times. Powder, bullets, and primer cost no more than any other caliber. It takes just a few more grains more for those calibers. I doubt it cost me 50 cents a shell to reload. I buy bulk brass, bullets, and primers, so my cost in minimal for all standard calibers, and factory magnums.

    This is my baby

I've taken more than a few grouse with that gun. Problem is, those .22 rounds travel very far, and I am a stickler about where my ordinance could go, so I gave up quite a few as well. Love shooting it though. So simple, light, and accurate. Wish I could say the same for a couple others in the quiver.

I ended up with an R-25. It's a DPMS branded with Remington's name. I dig the fluted 20" barrel and the mossy oak. It's an assault rifle that doesn't look like an assault rifle. (Which I'm sure Remington had in mind when they offered this weapon. "Hey look! This is a hunting rifle!")

I picked up a Cabela's branded 3-12x40 while I was there, not a bad deal for 70 bucks. I kinda screwed up on the rings, I wish I'd have gotten them a touch taller, the charging handle is tougher to get to.

I'll more than likely never use this thing for hunting. But, I am going to have fun shooting the shit out of some milk jugs tomorrow! I've got a couple different boxes of ammo to try tomorrow, gonna see what she likes to eat. (The cheaper the better.)
