More of them probably would look better if you shoot tight slow motion, but in realtime shot from a distance I think it doesn't looks so hot. Nice eyes Blurred.
You're one of the people in this thread who actually have been around for while and know what I'm saying. It's too bad people couldn't see a guy like Dave Swanwick or Rob Van Arnem ski those lines....they'd see what I mean.
    REALLY quiet.

Candide might be the most progressive park skier of our time....but the consistency of natural hits don't have the same boot to them, thus the off-balance arm compensation. Most here don't understand that's why zero spins are so tough. Your shit has to be dialed.

This is all coming from a guy who thought Tanner was much smoother than Seth in Believe.....so take that for what it's worth.
Sick none the less, and what most people probably don't see is this.........
Candide had to memorize those lines before killing them. THat is the real talent.
Skiing with your hands over your head is poor form imo 2:27-35......but that's just me. Flame on.

Onto something WAYYYYYYYYYYYY more important though.

    edit:
I uploaded a version to vimeo...I hate propitiatory flash players. That being said, it's worth going to his site as I'm sure they appreciate the traffic and that version has better resolution-
Thanks for the conversion. I could only get about every 3rd frame on the other one. I was more impressed with his skiing when I thought Candide was girl. After seeing the whole vid, he just looks like another over caffeinated frenchy. Would be more impressive if he was smoking while doing some of those lines. Now that would say " I am Euro hear me roar."

And what is up with all the long slow fade to black and back up. Too dark.
    Couldn't see half the time.

I mean besides all that, he did have a couple of pretty good lines in there.

No flames. It is quite the superfluous movement, but it seems to be an artifact of a skier from jibby side ... almost like he's coiling to throw some mega-twisty-thing, but the mega-twisty-thing never comes ... mostly because he's haulin down a sphincter pucker of a line that is in itself quite technical enough.

He's definitely not quiet, but his movements don't seem to put him in an otherwise poor position for the next turn/move. He has a strange way of almost making it look like he could do more in that space of time than the current 'standards' allow ...

The line he skis from ~3:40 - 3:51 is simply amazing.

As someone that never thought much at all of park skiers I'm quite impressed.

This gets at my original post question - have these guys had a crack at these lines, and therefore at minimum have at least some basic level of familiarity with them, or are they really flashing them?

I'm no Alfred Einstein, but is it even possible to 'memorize' a line from any perspective other than skiing it, and be able to stomp it like that?

I'm sure we can all stomp our own familiar lines, or even lines we're quasi familiar with, but if these dudes are doing that to lines they looked at from the lift, or from a helio, and 'took some notes on' and then skied them that way ... holy fack - that is other worldly.

    sickness!

Candide reminds me, reflex/skillwise/ninja-esqueness, of Gigi Ruf. They both just have, as previous posters have pointed out, a cat's agility.

Amazing stuff, I'm too lazy to search....what was Candide's big injury?

I've watched this clip at least a dozen times over the past couple days and have to say it's the finest segment of ski oriented film I've ever seen.

Not sure if it's the soundtrack, the editing, or simply the raw footage, but whatever it is, its really touched a nerve... effin awesome.

Bookmarked and rabidly waiting for more... Much respect!

i have important information about who actually understands what we are seeing, and the people who have been around here to know what small arm motions signify, and i also know why people care, and about why people get butthurt when other people don't like their opinions so they go and find poorly wrought joke jpgs in a defensive manner and post them.

He's probably got ADHD and just can't keep still for even a split second. For reals, though, I kind of agree with Blurred on this one.

IMHO, the excessive arm movement sort of detracts from an otherwise stellar display of athleticism. The stuff where he's in the air and his arms alternately go up and down is obviously an intentional part of his style and not a rolling down the windows thing but it doesn't look great on film.

He also seems to flail on occasion while skiing. The chute at 4:49 is a good example. It's like he's out of control most of the time and narrowly averting disaster until he pulls it together at the last second for that 40 footer. Again, it's an impressive display of athleticism and whatnot but I'd rather see it made to look effortless.

And also, about the line memorization thing. That's one of the major things separates pros from the guys that kill it at their home areas which they know inside and out. Pros can scope a line from a heli or whereever, know what it's going to look like skiing it, and then stomp it in one shot. Based on this video, I'd say Candide's ability to do that is otherworldly.

This is what the skiing in my dreams looks, feels, and sounds like.

I've been watching this and the EH Self Edit a lot lately. They are what skiing should be. I'm not going to criticize for arm bobbles or whatever. They just both look like and convey that they are having so much fun playing with the mountains. These make me want to go ski...what more can you ask.

Cool to see Candide bring his game into big mountain skiing. He's always been one of my favorite skiers and after this he still is.

    Good post.

Another minority that knows what they speak.

And to the rest of you toolbags.....who cares if we've pointed out he's skiing with his hands above his head a lot? We're also saying he's destroying most of it, and seems more in control when throwing a grab/shifty....that just shows his park roots.

    NOBODY is hating.('cept you) Relax.

I've been sticking up for park skiers around here more than anyone x100 ( except maybe that ON3P dude )for years around here.

    i dont even know why i bother...but.

we see the arm bobble, but its not about that. everything else is so far and above anything....i see one of the best skiers in the world skiing lines faster and smoother than anyone. so what if its not perfect...its better than anything else out there.

critquing something amazing, finding one small detail to diss...im sorry that is hating. you dont apreciate his skiing, you feel the need to try and make it less worthy. with so much positive shit that could be said about that clip you have to find the one bad thing say.

im sure people notice thisngs about your skiing that is not perfect...but mostly we arnt dicks and dont feel the need to try and prop ourselves up by finding some detail of your skiing that may not be perfect. and you know what, the people who do cunt the thread, rightly so get called out.

im just saying if your gonna nibble at someone over that shit, you better be fucking perfect yourself.

edit--and to reply to the quote, it dosent seem like you sticking up for park skiers...and you never once said, untill this post...that he killed it whatsoever. you said the clip should be called good edit!! implying the editing is better than the skiing??

I think the original point was that maybe it's not "better than anything else out there".

To start, let me make one thing clear... I think the video was sick. Almost everything about it was awesome - the cinematography, the editing, the lines Candide flashed, not to mention his athletic ability.

However, there's a lot of over-the-top praise in this thread. All things considered, I just don't think his skiing was superlative and I don't think there's anything wrong with sharing that opinion. It's not necessarily hating. I'll tell you what's definitely not cool, though: hating on other's critiqueing.

BTW, for anyone that's interested, I critique skiers professionally. For $50 I'll come watch you ski and point out how you suck. I used to do it for my friends for free but for some reason they never want to come skiing with me anymore. Anyway, I'm just trying to parlay one of my talents into some $$$.
