Logan is a pretty sweet town. Been here 6 months and no complaints. Logan is a good place to be. I second pretty much everything 2planker and buzzworthy have said.

Outside of SLC, Utah is pretty weak sauce, culinarily.
Folks who know, what are the best restaurants in Zion outside of the Wasatch/PC?

including great taco joints, dives, etc...

    ...

    Grubbage in Zion.

As for cheap, the burrito stand on the corner of 2nd South and State Street is money. GOOD food for cheap. I frequent that stand in the spring-fall at least once a week. New laws requiring the street vendors to have a deal for restroom access slowed down business a bit, but she is still there as far as I know.

Mesumicci's - about 250 South State on the east side. Absolute dive, but great food. It also has a soup nazi feel to it - you write your orders on a piece of paper and hand it to the "chef", who gets pissy if you fill out the form improperly. Good food though - Italian (obviously) and sandwiches, etc.

As for more pricey food - Christophers on 3rd South between Main and 2nd West is excellent. Great steak, fairly good prices. Took the lady there a few weeks ago and we both loved it.

I don't know about noteworthy, but I regularly eat at:

    La Nonne
    Hamilton's Steakhouse
    Happy Sushi
    El Toro Viejo

If you make 65K in Logan, you are very very lucky.

2 other large corps in Logan good to work for:
Harris Reseach (owner of Chem Dry)
    Campbell Scientific
    FYI,:

The median income for a household in the city was $30,778, and the median income for a family was $33,784. Males had a median income of $27,304 versus $19,687 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,765. About 12.6% of families and 22.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.6% of those under age 18 and 6.4% of those age 65 or over.

    thanks a lot twoplanker...that explains a lot.

so im guessing that, to most people of Logan, those $300,000+ homes that i saw are considered the 'McMansions'...

    Also add,

    Kamin Thai
    Cafe Sabor
    Tanpopo Sushi
La Tormenta (dodgy looking mexican joint, but good food)
The White Owl (good bar food)
Angie's (about the closet thing to a diner in logan)

El Toro Viejo is THE best Mexican joint in Cache Valley. I actually miss that place quite a bit. My buds that came in from NJ every year would make us eat there about every other day they thought it was so good.

Hamiltons rocks, Angies breakfast sandwich is one of the best breakfasts I have ever had, White Owl burger and a beer on the deck in the summer with the misters going can't be beat (really).

Cafe Sabor has a good menu as well.

    No sushi for me, allergic.

    McMansions is correct.

2P, those numbers are astounding. I did not realize we were actually doing well compared to the rest.

Could be a great place to buy some land though????? Sit on it???

My old landlords bought several acres a few years ago across the street from my old place. Bought: $35K Selling currently for $175K or so. Talking 5-7 years here between the buy and now selling.

This thread is making me miss the quaintness of the valley compared to the here.

What about the panaderia next to Tanpopo?! Kills all the other Mexican joints.
There's a world out there full of color, dreams, and imagination. What are you waiting for?

I guess so. Not sure what you're getting at. There are a lot of successful people in Logan that make a lot more than $30k, so don't let that median income throw you. Also consider that data is from the 2000 census, taken 8 years ago.

All I can say is you should really spend a few days, or even weeks, in Logan if you are coming from Philly. I like Logan and have even considered moving there, but if you are used to the Philly scene for food, nightlife, culture, sports, etc. Logan is about as different as you can get in the US, not that there's anything wrong with that. But at least you'll OK with the liquor store situation since there is only one state store in the entire town.
Question for the Logan crew- what's the deal with that big white elephant McMansion that looks abandoned on the bluff southwest of downtown? It looks like one of Pablo Escabar's old vacation houses.

to be honest, thats exactly what i want. i cannot stand philly. ive spent 18 years in a suburb of philly and almost 3 years right in the heart of philly. it is far too upbeat for me. im not into nightclubs, dance parties and all of that sort of shit. im a die-hard philly sports fan (mainly the eagles and flyers), but i haven't been to a game in years. the culture, well, i could do without. i do like the chic kind of living that philly has, but like i said, living in that environment gets you into the nightlife, etc associated with it which i personally cannot tolerate.

ive always been one to kick back and enjoy some beers with friends or having small, intimate....gatherings...where you can actually meet someone. real banger type parties just aren't my thing.

and the nature that comes along with being out there is one of my biggest turn-ons to the area. i hate the city. any city, for that matter. it is dirty, polluted, congested, and just way too fast-paced. i love nature and everything it entails. the environment is one of my littlest concerns in terms of being in Logan.

no doubt will i visit for not only a few days, but a few weeks, before i do something serious. i will also do the same in other areas. where i end up once i graduate, im hoping, is in the general vicinity of where i want to spend the rest of my life, so i know how big of a decision this is going to be.

i want to thank everyone for their help with this thread and going above and beyond what i initially asked. hopefully in a year or so, when i begin scouting out, i can meet a few of you guys who live out there. maybe show me around and shred some too

I hear you, the cheap mexican food options in logan are pretty diverse. There are about 4 different ones that the people in my office regualrly go to, the panaderia is in there. As well as la familia, tormenta, and the place on main and 200 south. All are good and very cheap.

What's with the McMansion term? That term has lost all meaning since it gets so misused. It used to imply a cookie-cutter, large footprint house, in a sea of the same style houses. The house you are referring to is nothing like that. It was a real Spanish-style mansion, totally unique to the neighborhood. That house was down the street from my old house and was the first house built up on the bench. It was purchased a few years ago and torn down for a rebuild.

The state owned liquor store is one of the best I've been in anywhere. Nice selection, good staff, and well managed. The wine selection is great too.

Yes, Logan is totally different than Philly.

You guys are killing me. I'll be back the end of March for a little late season Beav action. I like the Crackerbarrel in Paradise for Prime Rib and Chicken fried steak.

Viva, I think you would love the running options available around the valley.
Also the wife and I were talking last night about how we miss how good the insurance was their compared to IHC now that we are in SLC.

I will be interested to hear your take on Logan and USU. Assume a teaching position?

And I have to say that of all the state liquor stores that I have been in while in UT, Logan has the best selection of wine and beer. Interesting factoid.

I miss it and I don't miss it. I REALLY miss the easy access to the mountains, as they were a few minutes away as opposed to 35-45 minutes here.

Good luck with the interview and more for keeping up with 2P at the Beav if you end up out this way!

There may be some limited teaching, but I would primarily be going to work on contracts and economic development arising from the university's scientific inventions/discoveries.

Oh, I bet I know someone you might know... I'm in the process of filing a patent (just moved from provisional to utility patent) and have been working with the Director of the Technology Commercialization Office. He's just next door to us on the Innovation Campus.

Let me know if/when you're in town. We can get a drink. Are you a scotch drinker?

I fly in next Wednesday for all-day interviews on Thursday. I fly out early Friday AM. I guess I'll be free a little bit on Wed. PM and certainly on Thurs. PM. They've got me holed-up in downtown Logan.

Yeah, 2plank, in the event that I'm offered and accept, I would be reporting to "that guy".

Wednesday will be crazy for me because I have a huge grant due Thursday. Thursday night might be a good time to relax.

Send me a PM if you want to hang out for a bit.
