If y'all really pull this off it will be a feat of epic proportions. Has anyone considered how difficult it is going to be to lug a 1/2 barrell up there? I erroneously lugged a 75lb. sled up to the Gulf of Slides and it was brutal. A keg weighs 160lbs. By no means am I trying to discourage just curious if the volunteers realize what this will entail. I suggest downing trees and rolling it along the felled - and crampons. Godspeed. I hope to be up there to shower the work horses with cash and praise and swill a few Pales.

PS - That cruizincooler is awesome.

**EDIT** Just realized we are talking 5 galloners here. Ignore the above, other than the part about swilling Pales.

    i'm talking about the half-barrel.
I believe others have that impression too.

if we have 40 people, then we'll need at least two of 'em.

and i'll bet a team of 10 of us in charge of schlepping can git 'er done. especially with sleds. it'll be brutal, but i'll have a (perhaps unrealistic) goal of making it all the way - but with backup peeps, it should be possible if we take it slow (it's a marathon, not a sprint.)

since I have a 50K ultra the very next weekend, it'll make a decent taper - long aerobic workout, on feet, but without the impact.

Snowpack in my yard is 46 inches, and I'm in the valley. Those trails will be skinable for some time this year.

    Wink

Screw that. Get a pair of these and the keg can skin it's own heavy ass up with us.

This is shaping up to be a hell of a weekend...I'm in for sure and can't wait to pop my Tuck's cherry. Along with the keg - anyone consider grabbing some party balls? I bet you could harness one to someone's back for the hike, and it holds 55 beers ea.

Are most people planning on staying up at hojo's Saturday (and maybe Sunday) night? I am starting to wonder where everyone is going to sleep! I'm sure the TGR crowd will not be the only people looking to stay the night that weekend.

yeah. I'm thinking about bringing my tent. my winter sleeping bag isn't exactly light, but it is warm. my tent, on the other hand, is very lightweight mountain hardwear singlewall / no fly. They should even out. 3 person, too.

I bought climbing skins for my tele skis today, and got everything set up. I went to Campgaw and skinned up, just to make sure everything was cool, and it was. So now, to train, I am going to start putting weights in a sled and skinning up campgaw with them, at least until the snow melts. It's not much vertical, but at least I can get used to the "feel" of pulling a 150-lb sled up a mountain.

Any ideas of how to attach to a heavy sled to my body? I'm thinking of some combination of my climbing harness (maybe worn backwards to the loop is on my ass?) and some 2" webbing.. somehow..

I took a case up once and I my pack weighed 90 pounds (w/boots, food for a week, etc.) It was not an easy hike, but it was nice to have some cold ones to hand out! I can't imagine carrying a beer ball, though.

There's the Joe Dodge Lodge at the base, but it means hiking up again if you want to do two days.

Party @ Chez valleygirl Saturday night for those who don't think it necessary to camp out on The Mountain...

    Just sayin'...

(p.s. I am one who does NOT feel it necessary...)

actually, that makes me think of something: someone has to pay, and someone has to schlep. i propose that nobody be both.

    (:

    -steve
i agree with this whole-heartedly. there is no way anyway who participates in bringing the keg to the top should be paying. you guys(and girls) are doing enough. Since I will not be schlepping, I will be more than happy to throw down some money, for a few solo cups worth of sippage at the peak. Head Keg Sherpa please contact to discuss payment, and try to organize who is paying who is schlepping, to make sure both parties will have some brew.

btw...whats whats the verdict looking like on how many people are actually tenting it. i've never been to tucks, but would like to further the experience by possibly crashing in someone's tent who has extra tent space.

this weekend is going to be ridiculous. i can't wait.

the keg schlepping rig is set up.

drilled two holes into a kid's sled, attached biners, and ran a 30 ft loop of 2" webbing to each side, and attached my harness, worn backwards, to the middle, so I have (in theory) the sled 7.5' behind me - dragged my kid through the hallway on it, and it worked perfectly. The harness is kind of weird though, I'd like to find an alternative - although it feels like it's in the perfect place - I have the most leverage right where it hooks in.

I'm going to load it up with snow and try to take it up campgaw.

    steve-

I'm getting some skin material shipped to me if you wanted to bolt it to the bottom of the sled so that when you stop hiking, it won't slide backward on you. Also, I would run the webbing to gear loops on the side of a climbing harness if your harness has them. That would balance the weight on you left to right probably better than a single belay loop.

Steve, you don't need to use a harness, get your favorite backpack and two biners. Attach the biners to the waist cinch straps and go. Another way is to put it around your pack, at your lower back, buckle the waist strap and go. I have hauled 50lbs of winter overnight gear and ice climbing gear up to harvard cabin or hermits lake this way many, many times. Using a climbing harness will keep the weight to low, your hips will hate you by the first bridge. To show some sledding stoke down Mt. Washington, here's a video on the auto road

This is the same as what I have, thats my buddies sled. It still is way better to carry as much weight on your back, rather than pull it. but with a keg, you cant do that.

Taken end of march last year, we will be there soon enough! 77" at hermit lake right now!

just back read the thread, no, I'm not a member of the Appalachian Money Club. Harvard Cabin is 15 bucks a night even if you are the only one there, 15 total (I think) To bad they won't be open for the mini. Dodge Lodge is like 50 a night, good option for the non-winter campers.

can someone break it down further for making a reservation in a cabin ?
I'd be really stoked to sleep up there saturday night. I haven't EVER slept in the Ravine but we used to sack out at the employee bunk house at Pinkham, 20 years ago, hangin' with our scruffy friends working at AMC, washing dishes, making beds.
    good times~

If you want to sleep in a shelter, and you're comfortable with some outdoor winter sleeping, it is 10$ per night per person, and there are NO reservations for the shelters. You have to be there in person the morning/day of the night you want to stay. Additionally, each person in your party must be present when you make the reservation, for instance, I can't go up first thing friday morning and be like, "Can I have all of your shelter space for 80 internet shittalkers, maggots, and a couple kegs? please?"
There are also a number of tent platforms that are available for the same type of reservations, though those are a bit burlier if the wind gets ahowlin' (yeehaw) That's the skinny on sleeping UP on the mountain, apparently there are some other bottom of the mountain options. If you have some winter camping/cooking/daypacking skills, Mt. Washington is just about the most fun place to do it, especially when there are kegs involved.
Do the rest of us agree?
