Sprite -- Thanks. I think the guy who pulled it together did a pretty bang up job. Fun to know the routes before getting up there so you can just scout from HoJos and decide your fate (although some of the skiers right lines like Righ Gulley Lobster Claw, RR Gulley and Connection Gulley can't be scouted from Hojos). Personally I've really grown to like the Hillmans area as well.

We had endeavored to have a much more detailed source with more pics of lines from different angles and different snow levels, but the project somewhat faded over the years. At least something was pulled together to help folks navigate their fate. I definitely encourage anyone who insn't familiar with the available lines to use his site for the Tucks info. Most of the other stuff on firstchairmag.com is stale, but the Tucks stuff is still useful.

awesome idea DEVO. if someone in the know can coordinate signing up those who can definately commit, I'm in. Isn't it a first come/first served deal with lodging up there tho ? I thought that's what EC posted

If the shelters fill, there is always the option of camp sites just down the road from the visitor center. Sure, requires hikes from Pickhams each day, but hey, we're all in great shape come April anyways, right?

above, where they mention the cornice in the left gully is kind of silly (not trying to bash anyone) but seriously, its a cornice!

the ice fall is just that...a fall. above it is in the 45 range at best and then you have the drop. you don't ski the drop, you drop the drop.

anyone can ski 50degrees for a couple turns. sustained 50 degree Chamonix style turns is whole different ball game.

Tucks is fun but Tucks is and can be dangerous and deadly. I plan to go up to ski. I will have my full compliment of backcountry touring gear including full avalanche equipment. I will drink a couple of beers, but I won't get out of hand. I have a lot of reasons for this, but foremost is safety. I should qualify that this statement is fully dependent on weather and avalanche conditions. If I don't feel it is safe to be in even the bowl, I would choose not to go any hire than Hojo's.

In regards to the date, It is just like any other backcountry location as who knows what it is going to be like at that particular time. Normal avalanche protocol needs to be followed in deciding if it is smart to go up there and then even where it is safe to ski or for that matter sit on that specific day. Traditionally, this is a relatively safe time frame, but this is a way different year snow pack wise. Most people up there have absolutely no clue what so ever could and has happened up there and they will not give it a second thought.

    Personal responsibility.

EDIT: Even if avalanche conditions are good, falling ice is always an issue also. I have seen pieces the size of VW's come off the headwall and make it all the way to the floor and entrance into the bowl.
Hope your wisdom sinks into some places.

While personal responsibility is a key concept... it ranks up there w/common sense.

    Listen, peeps. The Man knows.

What H-man said - first time I was up there was in April and couldn't believe how the weather turned that day. And it was no kind of snow year like this - Myself, I'll wait till May to party up there this year

Not too be annoying and nit-picky but a ton of people are talking about delaying this because it is such a big snow year. It doesn't matter how big of a snow year it is, basically all that matters is the weather the week before the gathering. It could dump every day until around April 6th then if it cleared up and we got a good corn cycle there would be good, stable spring by that weekend. Or it good rain everyday and be warm, and kill almost all the snowpack, then snow 6 inches two days before and the avi danger would be too high.

From what I am reading the date is still 4/11-13, addressing weather and avy concerns it has always been in mind that if the conditions were not cooperative my group would be doing some lift serviced skiing in the area. No guarantees on the weather and conditions, but it does take some planning to get up there from down here.

Date wise, isn't the Inferno the next weekend?

No matter what the snow forcast is, take a look at mountwashington.org for the avy report before you head out, they will have it up at hermit lake around 8 (if my memory serves me)

That is what I posted... However, stopped in to chat with folks there yesterday to ask some questions, and they will take a reservation for groups of ten or more. So, if we wanted to get a head count on those interested in DEFINITELY SLEEPING ON FRI and SAT, we might be able to approach them with a reservation. I can check in on it tomorrow as to availability.

I haven't been on here in a while. damn

Depending on conditions I'll make an effort to be there. It'll be my first time @ mt washington on skis and first time meeting some other maggots. Excited.
If the conditions are anything but ideal, probably not as I lack the proper gear/experience.

^^^^^^I've just camped down the road from Pickhams. Few different sites toward Gorham work well. Also cheap motels in N. Conway with walking access to bars. Even skiing Saturday, skiing down, apres in lot, camp and hiking back up Sunday really isn't all that bad IMHO

Depending on occupancy that weekend, I could probably get a decent/discounted rate at a hotel about 10 miles from Tux. There is also a few maggots here offering up space. VG has some room. EP and I have a tiny place, but we do have an spare room with a bed and a loft with plenty of floor space.
