Good to see you guys are getting some action. I haven't pack tested yet. Waiting for all the paperwork to go through with CHS...so in other words it'll probably be at least 2 more weeks.

It looks like I'm staying in N Idaho again. I thought pretty seriously about going back to the shot crew, but decided the district gig was too good to pass up. I'm detailed over to the district as an Assistant Engine Foreman for the season. I should get a bunch of quals and a fair amount of single resource assignments, which will be good. The only problem with my detail is it's in the silver valley, so I'm looking at a 45 minute commute. I'll still get to go out with the shot crew to fill in as a squad boss for most of July and possibly later in the season.

AVUE screwed me out of a job on the Flathead last week. I hate that system. Somehow I didn't pass the quality standards on the KSAs so I didn't make the cert. I copied and pasted all the answers from past GS 6 applications where I did make the cert. Supposedly the cert was really weak and I probably would've had the job if they had been able to get my app. That system is such BS!

btw, do you work for Idaho Panhandle IHC?
Yep. It's my 5th season there (if you count this year)...

i didn't run into Yeti- they demobed the incident the day before, i tried. then we started breaking fires at noon the next day...

Yeti- if ya run into Coman on one of the R-3 ships- tell him his reno/truckee buds said hi. he's a good boot, so was his dad.

Sherpa- chose wisely you did young padawan. take care of your knees while you can, rehab w/care- there will always be more fires. expand your quals, FMO's/Fire Chiefs always look for a more rounded career experience for hires and promotions. with your crew time you definately have the suppression quals and the engine time will round you out, as would some FPT time. plus- when things really get rippin' they'll be able to pull you out for some single resource spots. a good career move me thinks
sat with 4-5 "soups" last week and made some "swag" season predictions-
consensus was "if you're not already a bit 'concerned' (scared?) with the upcoming season- you damn well better be."

Tomorrow, I'm opening the fire retardant base at Minden Air Tanker Base for the start of the season. Our neighbors at Stead air tanker base already pumped 100,000+ gallons. Should be an interesting season. Be safe out there!

if anybody knows an a/c dispatcher who wants to detail to white mountain AZ they should contact the center there.

yo Yeti- just stay out of Winslow, we broke down there once...

Things slowed down in the Sierra's after last weeks wind event, we got as much snow as last January(?)

Had a regional safety officer show up on a fire at 0730, on the LINE, to check our safety gear (had most of mine). he asked if i knew the "fire season '07 safety slogan" fresh out of the WO. i replied not really, so you may hear it here first- "Safety is Cool". Yep- that's it from the Washington brain trust- Safety is Cool. he traveled 7 1/2 hours to tell us that. i couldn't wait to burn some boot leather back up the hill and tell the rest of the guys.

Lanky and Rax have both "unretired" and have crossed over to CalFire, for those that knew them...

    Be safe out there

starting to get busier in utarrr.

missed rappel training. d'oh. will get that in later this season. I think I may be to fat to get out on the skids during flight.

my foolishly ginormous waxed-handlebar moustache had to go yesterday due to a truly inordinate amount of bullshit being laid down by my coworkers.

supertroopers-style copperstache has now come into effect.

    that is all

oh and MT...boooyeh! boogety boogety. fkna!

Yetiman stopped by my place recently, I know it was to show off the ginormous moustache. I didn't take the bait, I said not a word. But, it was ginormous.

I asked about you yesterday Yeti. We had a heli doing water drops on a fire in the urban interface and I could've sworn the heli dropped off a crew, but it was a local FS crew. I'm always amazed at how much work wildland fire is, it always wipes me out.

We got dispatched on the fire at about 5pm, had it under control at about 8pm and were done mopping up and ready to leave at midnight. As soon as we got the last length of 5" loaded, another fire got dispatched about 12 block south, we were there until 4am.

I think the biggest part of work for us comes with the loading and unloading of hose. For those two fires we used: 3000 ft of 5" supply, about 2600 feet of 1 3/4" line, 4 or 500 feet of 3", and I don't know how much 1" forestry line (alot).

Wheres the action shots from this week's burn fest in ID and UT? Planning to be out by next week, hoping for something other than an EMT assignment.

Flykdog - Do you guys go out on contract?
