Question Universal Mounting Method- any good?

I must've seen at least a gazillion threads on ski mounting points for various skis and the answers have all been ski specific. Somewhere in the last couple days I ran into a website promoting finding the midpoint of the running length and mounting such that the ball of the foot hit that point. My question is, does anyone still do this, would it end up as a rearward or forward mount, and does it ski well on most skis regardless of make and model?

unless you can ski the ski first and play with the center point, I'd mount on center as marked by the company..

Back in the olden days, before twin tips and sidecut there was a general rule of half cord length to toe of boot. Looking at most skis today thats pretty far back.
Every new ski I get today I go back 1-2cm, but I ski almost all pow or crud. Think forward= quicker, easier turn initiation and better switch performance; rearward= more stable at speed, better flotation, requires more effort to initiate a turn.
It is fun to take a lot of similar products across the spectrum and put a boot on the ski, lined up with the mounting point. You will see a lot of different mounting points, that's for sure!

On the other hand, some times it better to just put all this crap out of your head and just ski the piss out of it!
