    Feedback on TGR Rescue Video

Hey, would you guys mind giving me some feedback on our latest TGR snow safety vid (group rescue techniques) on the Anomaly DVD extra (or direct through BCA)? Next year I'm planning on doing chapter 3, advanced rescue techniques. It will cover Multiple Victim Rescue and advanced shoveling tactics, at least.

After I get done with rescue, I'm going to move on to route finding and snow assesment. Trying to keep each lesson to 20 minutes or less. Also want them to be detailed, not overviews.

Also, what do you guys think of the series so far? Is it of any use? The goal is to expose the new dudes to this stuff, and hopefully encourage them to take a course. I've heard from some that it's also a good review for those that have taken a course as well.

Any way you can host that video on Conway's Corner for folks who aren't going to buy the movie?

Soon as I get it I will give you my 2 cents. But it is coming as an Xmas present, so it will be a bit.

I wish they/TGR promoters would show this at the TGR films as well. I really needs to be as all the kids at Utah State were oohing and ahhhing at all the avies shown in TGR films. They may not be getting the right impression from the movie itself and TGR could do a nice service by promoting your 20 minute sessions on safety on the mountains and let people know that it is a "special" right after the movie and give it enough marketing that people will stick around to see what you have to say and what they can learn.

One: Would like to see it at the movie, as this is usually my first time seeing it.
Two: It should be shown as a educational piece for those people sitting behind me bragging about getting caught in an avie and thinking it was "cool".

Well, there is a cent worth.

good idea buzz! I'll take you two cents worth and run with it.

We're showing Anomaly in Juneau in a couple of weeks as a benefit for the SE Alaska Avalanche Center, and I think we'll also show the avalanche rescue video as well.

My advise if I were promoting is to tell everyone to stick around at the end of the show for a special segment snow safety by TGR's lead guide, Jim Conway. Talk it up, cite a few things they will see and get er done!

I wish you luck! You never know who may take this info to heart and could save someone's life. You never know. Better be safe than sorry in my motto when it comes to snow.

Better yet show it as a sequence in the movie otherwise the stampede for the bar is gong to take over? DVD handouts?

Perhaps something TGR, MSP and others could get together and promote jointly across the ski porn industry?

    Good Idea

I like the idea of showing it with the movie too. I'm not sure that the people who need to see it (ie: the guys bragging about being in slides), would actually watch it. More likely the people who already have a clue would watch. Maybe if we combined it with a North Face or Rossi giveaway. That might fill some seats.

I'm thinking before the movie, after everyone going right to the bar. It's a tough call.

Hopefully word of mouth and easy access (on the DVD) get people to watch it.

    Any other ideas are appreciated.

    Thanks

One for the future: when you get the series done, package it a seperate disc with all the lessons on the one disc, edited with some of the footage.

Also maybe have it a a seperate 'giveaway' at the shows. Folks stoked on the show will likely watch it for further inspiration and end up learning stuff, where as the premiere is about the oohs and ahhs...could be pricey, but thats what the TNF corporate boys are good for!!! (at least in Europe, when I worked for them )

    Sarge,

I personally really liked the first in the series, haven't seen the latest one. One of the guys I ski with is the former Avi advisor for our region of the NSP and he really likes it, enough that he encourages folks to watch it.

It's a great refresher for people who have already taked the Avi I course and a nice primer for the person just getting into the idea of BC skiing.

For future, I would look at some accident reports, and any footage, and perhaps point out ways to avoid getting into a similar situation? One of the more sobering things for me is to read accident reports from areas I ski. It gives you a mental picture(hey I've been there) and it makes you stop and think. When I was young, pre-kids and a family, I never really gave it as much thought as I should have. Now, I probibally analyze it too much and miss out on some great skiing. But going over the reports really makes you take extra care before charging out into potential trouble.

    Good Luck,
    Jay

Dug, why don't you go see the film tonight in Seattle? Hard to tell from this thread whether they show the extras as trailers or not.
But I would third that suggestion of Telemike's.

I didn't realize that you can buy Sarge's rescue videos "Take Charge - Leading a Group Rescue" and “Tracker 101: Mastering Your Digital Transceiver” directly though Backcountry Access for $10 each or $15 for the set. I'm going to order a set.

To order, contact BCA at (800)670-8735 or info@bcaccess.com.

Also, BCA has some good educational resources on their website filks might want to check out. http://www.bcaccess.com/education/index.php

I plan to be there tonight but somehow I doubt they're gonna show it.

Thanks for the feedback. Let me know as soon as somewatches the new one. It will be a little bit before we transfer it to the website, but I want to get it up there eventually. I like the idea of checking out accident reports, that's always a great learning tool.

Seems to be a big part of the reference framework behind the CAA's new Avaluator, a decision making tool for amateur recreationalists ( recreationists??)

    Sarge,

I watched your segement tonight (in the comfort of my easy chair) and would like to give you a big thumbs up.

This is super as an overview for folks unfamiliar with backcountry travel, giving a ton of useful info in a short time while also encouraging further education. Enough detail to be informative without being overwhelming.

Since I've taken a few avie courses this was mostly review for me, however there is always need for reinforcemnet and alternate ideas/approaches. One example is the graphic detailing the downhill zig-zag during a group search, this visual really got in my head.

And having Tate as the wigger was hilarious!

Thanks JC, I'll put it to good use here in SW MT!

    Thanks

Thanks for the feedback. Glad someone in here finally got to watch it. Good to hear it was useful. Thanks to the volunteers who worked with me all day to make it too. Tate just fell into the tweeker roll so naturally. They need to let him out more!

Just checked it out, and I like it a lot. Good review, so even if you haven't seen the previous lesson you can get into the scenario. Good, quick overview of what needs to happen in a group rescue. Considering our audience here in Juneau, I think this will go over well as an intro to Anomaly.

    Nice work sarge!

    Group buy?

Maybe the stand alone DVD should be promoted in the form of a reduced rate group buy for TGR members on the main skier/snowboarder page on this forum(sticky?)? Or at least promoted more vigorously as a freebie with the Anomaly DVD. Especially with the latest slide involving some of our own, those who check out only the main forum might be more likely to begin or enhance their avy education with this easy to understand video.

Liked it a lot. I thought the group size was a little unrealistic, though. Most of us probably ski in the BC in groups of 2-4, so we wouldn't have the luxury of having as many searchers and diggers as you illustrated. Might be good to talk a bit about how the process/decision making might work differently in a small group or even a solo rescue effort.
