the 95kph winds today wont help that meager pow coverage. besides, is there really much offpiste accessible if furgsattel isnt open? i dont think i want to be much offpiste early season (crevasses).

i'm on the fence...and jetlagged like hell right now!

The organizers of the cancelled WC event in Sölden say that the temperatures are like in July ...

winter is coming. (btw. you get a beer from me if you can tell from which fantasy book series this quote is )

from november 1st the snow levels will drop and serious snow is in the forecast all over the northern alps. not sure where the most and how much yet, but it will be the first dump of the season with 30cm+ id say. [antijinx]
so from 0 deg line at 4200m we'll be heading straight into winter with a snow level of 500-800 or 1000m (lower in the east)
It's a war of the mind and we're armed to the teeth.

Subtle, I just forwarded your oracle sentence to my friends and parents who can't wait to go skiing. Although, judging from my mom's photos, the late hiking/climbing season has been very good.

I'm just Halloweening this weekend ...

... and in training for that segment with klar

Nah, my friends bailed and so I'm going as Mozart this year.

    - costume
    - wig
    - fancy shoes with ridiculous buckles
    - music notes
    - lots of music paper notes I printed off to web that I'll be handing out during the evening
    - iPod loaded up with Mozart pieces as well as Falco's "Rock Me Amadeus"

first dump of the season coming.(in the nortehrn alps that is)
more snow in the east. (as always during the last years it seems).
maybe about 10-20cm in switz (maybe a tad more in the säntis area/east)
30-40cm from arlberg to zillertal/a few km east. and more in the eastern alps. (maybe up to 60cm+)

the weather constellation favours the east as the high pressure system moves in from the west. northern airflow will dominate this weather pattern.
snow levels will be starting at 1500+ id guess but lower quikly down below 1000m and to the valley floor in the east.

the mid term outlook sees high pressure, though on a more seasonal temperature level and not on 25 degrees and more..
i still can't believe it. vaduz(liechtenstein) had a all time end of october high of 28.8 degrees last thursday. with freezing levels at 4200m !!!!

Chamonix = Good climbing, biking, hilking, not a lot of snow.
Was in Zermatt last week and it hit over 20 degrees.

    Photo from Saturday.

Cham is supposed to cool down on Friday...

how east is east? how did the stanton area do?

article in the paper today on swiss ski resorts starting up the snow-making now. good news i guess - if they think it's going to stay cold enough then perhaps that's a good sign.

i dont think anton was/is far enough in east. heard from radio they had got 15cm or so(that was yesterday). same for innsbruck area, we were on pitztal glacier yesterday, would've been about 10cm fresh if the winds hadnt blown all of it away. i think this is far enough in east..:

kitz and dachstein were right in the center of the storm. and they will get more on sunday.
so there is about 60cm(56cm at an official weather station a few km north of the kitz at 1950m) at 2000m in the kitzsteinhorn area (and more further up as you can see in kesies data)
and about 70cm (unconfirmed handmeasured ski area data from 5km north) at the dachstein at 2000m . the automatic glacier station at the dachstein does not confirm this, but as kesie said it may have been blown away.

in upper austria/salzburg area 40cm fell even down to 491m at the mondsee station.
anton didn't get much. though more than switz ,france etc.
the winter seems to develop similar to last year [antijinx]

edit: and the suisse areas can stop snowmaking again because from sunday it'll be warm again
    not hot, but warm.
