My top 4 for my 21’ Tundra Trail Edition are:

Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek
Cooper Discoverer Road+Trail AT
Nokian Outpost nAT
BFG All Terrain T/A KO3

Final decision for my Tundra came down to the Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek and the Nokian Outpost nAT…….

Ended up choosing the Cooper Discoverer Rugged Trek….getting installed by my local on Thursday.

Figured I’d give the Coopers a shot this time around/ I had originally liked the way they looked/and my local guy agreed. He also had very good things to say about the Nokians…

Have a Ford Expedition. Looking at the Cooper Road & Trail. Hadn't crossed my radar until this thread but it looks just about perfect for my usage. Reviews look great. How's the impact on gas mileage?

Have had my Cooper Rugged Treks on my Tundra for a couple weeks now…..no effect to my gas mileage. I am very glad I switched to these compared to the factory Michelins that were on before. These Coopers look so much better…and saved me some money.

Road & Trail <> Rugged Treks

I've run the Road and Trails on my '24 4Runner since Oct, no noticeable difference from the stock Bridgestone Dueler HTs (which are a touring tire, not an AT).

Bought all terrain k03 for my son’s safety.
as of last may a redesign of the k02

Had them up and down the canyons in the snow for a week. Great traction. Minimal road noise on highway. Big lugs should be great Offroad.

Winter rated, nice siping (full depth!) (also read up on interlocking blocks and other shit they are bragging as innovations), and yet high mileage warranty 50k (not that you get that credit ever, or it’s pennies at best)

Pro rated warranty to 2/32? I ain’t riding them that bare.
But the full depth siping is sweet. I’ve replaced tires that would still be good for another 10k but the siping was gone.

Deep snow tire siping and tread in a year round compound is sweet.

Limited sizes for now. And availability. Had to have them shipped from CO for an extra bend over. But worth it.

Definitely my go to tires from now on.

Update:

I am a big fan of the MT Baja Boss AT they do really well in snow and hold their own when it gets slick. Not too loud either. Would buy again for sure.

Just did about 3000 miles from CA to CO and back in my camper van with LT Nokian Outpost AT’s. Note these are the Russian made ones I got on clearance, the new nAT is essentially identical tread pattern (with a blockier shoulder) made in Tennessee. I don’t think the tire compound is supposed to be any different on the new ones, but it could be.

General Thoughts:


-They wandered a decent amount on the highway at first with 52 psi front, 66psi rear on Lt265/75r16. I lowered the tire pressures which helped a lot (now at 45psi front, 59psi rear with 3900lb front and 4800lb rear axle weights, respectively). They also improved tracking and feel after about 1500 miles (I think the tires needed to “break in” a bit, now they don’t seem any different than the Wildpeaks handling wise.

-Considerably quieter and smoother on pavement than the Falken Wildpeak AT3W’s I had previously. Really nice ride.
-Did great offroad in Moab, good grip on packed and loose dirt rock, snowy muddy trails. Aired down to 22psi front 30psi rear no problem.
-wet pavement and Packed snow performance seemed very good. Maybe slightly worse braking and lateral traction than the Wildpeaks, but negligible.
-ice and slushy/icy road performance does unfortunately seem noticeably worse than the Wildpeaks. Particularly braking performance. acceleration perfromance and lateral traction, not as much of a difference, maybe noticeable but not enough to care. It has been a year since I had the wildpeaks on (had about 75% tread still) so I may be slightly misremembering their ice performance, but overall I think I’ve got this right.

That being said, the outposts were still were very solid through the two snow storms I drove in and felt very consistent and manageable, and overall still had very good traction and snow/ice performance for an AT tire and I’d feel comfortable driving them in any winter conditions with appropriate caution and sense (and leaving enough room for braking). I never came close to slipping out or struggling on steep icy driveways or roads.

But Wildpeak AT3W may still be king of winter AT tires because it’s a little better in ice and icy slush. But tradeoff is it was a much noisier tire. I’m slightly disappointed because so many people have raving winter performance reviews for the Outposts, it’s possibly my memory is failing me a bit and I’m just being picky. AT3W’s are discontinued now, and AT4W is worse in snow and ice. Maybe K03 is the answer, or the nAT’s may have a slightly different tread compound. The MT Baja Boss AT looks great and seems to have slightly better siping than any other AT tire, but they’re significantly heavier (58lbs) than other tires like the Nokian (50lbs).

Will update later this winter after a few more storms.

I checked SimpleTire and they still have AT3W inventory in my size. I should have gone that route instead of going AT4W, as my intention was to upgrade braking and lateral traction on ice, but I bought the tires before tests showing the massive downgrade in winter performance in LT sizes relative to the outgoing AT3W came out. Oh well, I haven’t had my rig on ice yet thanks to rather high snow elevations this winter. I have an obscure 15” size and pretty much only Falken and Kumho (AT51, AT52) make a 3PMS load range D LT tire in that size.

Cooper Road and Trail AT a thumbs up for me this winter, slight slight hit on mpg but that’s expected when going against a grandpa tread highway tire it was replacing on a new to me suv.

After four trips now to Discount Tire regarding the Cooper Road + Trail AT tires I bought in November, I’m having KOthrees put on currently as they agreed to swap them out.
Coopers would not stay balanced, are easily the bounciest tire I’ve ever had on my truck, and never felt right. Just paying the cost difference in actual tire price. They are covering everything else.

Heading in to discount tire today. Looking for half ton truck tires. Mostly a road warrior, tow rarely but sometimes, some forest roads, and a good amount of time on snowy roads. Currently have ko2s that desperately need replaced. Probably going to go with an AT tire again. Have heard lots of good things about wildpeaks but they don’t seem to be the value grab they used to be as prices have increased. Cooper ATs look like the best price but the above review has me hesitant. Any recs before I head in?

KO3&#39;s if available in your size. Wildpeak AT4s sound like less good in the snow compared to AT3&#39;s. While KO3&#39;s got better in the snow than KO2s. From what I have read anyway&#39;s. I have AT3&#39;s and KO2s and like the KO2&#39;s better, but they are on different setups.

I wasnt gona mention it but since you folks brought it up but I heard about the cooper hate 20 yrs ago from my ski bud who said they were great initialy on his SUV and then they sucked pretty quick so he took them back to dealer who let him trade to a differnt brand and buddy seemed to infer the dealer knew they sucked and did not give him any hassle

what is the difference between cheap snow tires and Nokians what will you think when you are upsidedown in a ditch but hopefully not dead ?

I do a lot of walking my dog around the ski resort and am often appalled at the tire choices people make on their cars and trucks for winter use in the p n dub … but nothing beats the stereotypical worn AF MT on 22” rims.
