I am firmly in the all terrain camp over dedicated winters. I ran the BFG all terrains last winter and was very happy with them. As good or better than the At3’s and have a much smoother ride. Be interesting to see how they do in winter season 2.

KO2 vs AT3 on my Sequoia and Tundra w/ camper on it. My impression is that the KO2s on the Sequoia are pretty bomber in the snow. Feel very connected to the road and predictable when it does slide. The AT 3s are 34” on 20” rims. And like i said, they are on a truck w/ camper. They feel a lot less grippy in the snow. Mud and off roading they do great. When they wear out i will probably get next size diameter up and KO2 or 3s and smaller wheels to give a little more cushion because the 20” kinda suck on bumpier terrain. Hopefully thats a ways out because it’ll be a pricey switch.

I see on Discount Tire there are Goodyear Wrangler Ultraterrain ATs for $908, Falken Wildpeak AT4w for $888, BFG KO3 for $1108 and the Toyo Open Country AT3 for $944. Am I just splitting hairs and any would be solid for my 2020 4Runner?

Do you have a Costco nearby? Their BFG pricing is really really good when they run BFG discounts, which is a few times per year. Costco doesn’t carry Falken or Toyo though.

I think the Trail Terrain was intended to have better snow and on-road performance than the KO series? But less off road oriented and no LT sizes right? That was my recollection when you brought them up last year.

Looked my Discount Tire receipt, October 2021. Out the door for 275 /65 R18 SL AT3s for $1053 for reference.
I’ll get these again if they are the cheaper option over KO3s.

IIRC, Costco's BF Goodrich sales are $30 off a set of 4, which doesn't strike me as something worth waiting for.

Best tire-buying strategy I've started using: get Discount Tire to price match, and do it during a rebate offer for XYZ Brand tire you're looking for. You can submit price match requests online -- and if they reject it, you can try again, maybe you'll get a DT rep who just doesn't care that much and will approve it. DT will email you a price match quote valid for 30 days. And you'll get the manufacturer rebate too.

I did this in the spring during a $80 Kumho rebate offer, and got DT to price match Pep Boys. Pep Boys only had one tire in stock (I think it was clearance priced, so much cheaper than DT and everyone else) -- and the first request to DT got rejected because there was only one in stock. I sent it again a day later, and got a different rep who didn't look that closely -- they price matched it.

Google and find whatever reasonably legit looking online retailer has your desired tire for cheap, and get DT to price match it. If it's obviously scammy or fake, they won't. But there's a lot of cheap online sellers they will match -- including Amazon, which occasionally has stupid cheap pricing.

I run a 2016 Tacoma, swapped out the OEM tires at 33k for the Wrangler Ultraterrain, 83k now on the truck (50k tires) and time to replace. I like them enough to mount them again. Not a Falken fan myself, ran BFGs on past 4runner, I thought the wranglers were just as good and $200 cheaper. No idea on Toyo

Thank you. How are the Wranglers in snow/winter driving?

I have them on a 1st Gen Tundra. Did one messy drive over Cottonwood with <5K on them last October and thought they were pretty horrendous. Granted, I typically run snows and have a 500lb snowmobile in the bed at all times from December - April. Small sample size, unfair point of comparison etc etc.

Eh, that’s doesn’t sound good though, even though they’re not snows.

Never had issues until this last winter, little slick with the worn tread but got through fine. I just hit the wear mark on the tires so it’s time. My cheap ass just has issues with $1000 vaporizing in a flash but need to get it done before next camp trip

I haven’t bought BFGs since 2021, and I got rid of my records when I sold my Forester, but I seem to recall getting like $100 or $150 off my set of BFGs there (Advantage TA Sport), and I’m pretty sure it was good for all of them.

That said the Costco appointment system is a bit annoying, often you can’t get a repair done the same morning or afternoon and have to leave the wheel there with them all day.

I got my Nokians through SimpleTire which had good pricing and my Falken’s through DT. For the Falken’s I paid online and then requested that they put in all metal valve stems, they did metal stems and caps and didn’t charge extra at all. I’ve always had good experiences with DT/AT and in the west they seem to be located in good spots if you get caught with surprise damage.

I just picked up the same size at4ws and it was something around 1600 with taxes in Washington state at Discount Tire. Last set I bought 6 years ago were 150 cheaper per tire. Zing

Inflation. Cost a lot of money to ship a tire across the ocean these days. Especially larger rim diameter AT tires. That has added about $20 to the cost of a tire. And throw in the labor cost. No gen Z or whatever the next generation that is coming wants to work in a tire store unless you pay them $20-$25/hour. And tire manufacturers have taken advantage of tariffs on China and raised prices accordingly.

Not to mention you probably bought AT3s not AT4s last time.

Costco wouldnt put bfgs on my Taco because they said they wouldnt fit. I had to pull a Karen and talk to the manager. He refused, so i went to another costco and they did it no questions asked. Weird.

They normally don’t care about tire height, width is normally the issue. My winter tires are technically too wide for the wheels but I don’t tow in the winter and run my air lower.

Example… 8 inch wide wheel, maximum tire width is a 245. I have 8 inch wheels and have 325 on them. They are harder to balance and a bastard to mount.

Has anyone run the new Toyo RT Trail? Debating between those and the Toyo AT3 for my 4Runner.

Buddy had those but on a 2500 Cummins. Didn’t have a good experience at all. I know other people that have liked them on lighter vehicles though. Not the new ones

Those are two pretty different tire options

Ended up going with the Mickey Thompson Baja Boss AT. Heard a lot of good things about them so I sent it.

Excellent, please post snow reports come winter! That tire is pretty dang well regarded in reviews and tests but it doesn’t seem to get much play among the winter driving crowd.

    This tire is sick!

    Much quieter than anticipated.
