I don’t think they even want government contracts, they just don’t want to compete with the government giving free services. Let’s just say that a company backed by PE money was building a more detailed subscription based avalanche report. The worst the SAC report, the more subscribers they get. No FARS, CPARS, FFP bids bullshit, just defund SAC and let the private sector do it “better.” The market will take care of it by creating a monopoly…
I heard there was a big slide out by blue lakes today. No one seriously injured as far as I know. Hopefully it makes it to SAC. Watch that PWL on the E/S side of the lake

Kirkwood was glorious today. 3" of blower on top of 2' of wind packed spackle over most of the mountain. Steep stuff skied unbelievably soft - even All The Way, which got raped and pillaged by every single Jets team today (and numerous snowboarding butt-sliders), was soft and forgiving and awesome even on the steepest parts.
I also found numerous fresh tracks out where Ottime took that photo.
My point was that in the overall scheme of things its hard to imagine Rep. Kiley getting too exercised about a service that benefits a handful of well off skiers, riders, and snowmobilers. Now FS firefighting and fuel reduction--that's a different story and if you're going to write your Congressman write them about that. (And the most effective way to write would be to hijack a District 3 address if you don't have one. Writing Doris Matsui or Nancy Pelosi probably won't do much good.) Remember, it was a few San Joaquin farmers talking to their Congressman that got Trump's dam releases turned off. Kiley is pretty reasonable, and it writing him about FS fire issues might do some good.
You can help save the Sierra Avalanche CenterWhat is going on?As part of the federal government’s ongoing staff cuts, the U.S. Forest Service may lay off one of the three Sierra Avalanche Center forecasters as soon as the week of February 10th. If that happens, the Sierra Avalanche Center (SAC) would be forced to reduce its daily avalanche forecast to only 4 forecasts per week, instead of the standard 7.Now is the time to share your concerns with your Congressional representatives. The volume of calls/emails matters in this type of advocacy, so we need as many people as possible to share their concerns. They may not even be aware of this issue right now, but if enough of us call, we can force them to pay attention.Call or email your congressional representative and share your concerns. If It takes 3 minutes. Calls are better than emails (always leave a message!), but everything counts. You can use or modify the script below.

I am a constituent of (YOUR REPRESENTATIVE) from (YOUR CITY/TOWN). Im calling to share my concern about the proposed U.S. Forest Service layoff at the Sierra Avalance Center. This decision puts lives at risk and will cost the government money. Over 200,000 individuals rely on the Sierra Avalanche Centers forecast to avoid avalanches and stay alive in the backcountry each winter. During past government shutdowns, avalanche forecasters were categorized as essential public safety employees and exempt from furloughs due to the critical nature of their work. Local sheriffs departments and search and rescue teams rely on the Sierra Avalanche Center forecast to conduct safe rescue operations during the winter. Ski patrollers at Tahoe-area ski resorts rely on the Sierra Avalanche Centers forecast to support their mountain safety operations. As I mentioned before this dangerous decision has NO fiscal benefit to the government and will cost the government money. The Sierra Avalanche Center operates as a partnership between the U.S. Forest Service and a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. The nonprofit pays 75% of the forecasters salaries and had already funded all three forecaster positions this season. Laying off a forecaster would require the government to pay the nonprofit back! Thank you for your time, (YOUR NAME) P.S. You can also use this same process to let them know your concerns about any other important issues. Last week, I sent Rep. Kiley a message with concerns about how the federal hiring freeze is impacting hiring the wildland firefighters that this region needs. Edit because this forum can't handle apostrphes
Not arguing about the necessity of giving foreign aid in general nor are USFS/USDA cuts something I support, but I don’t think your first statement is true. The US has sent at least 44 billion in literal dollars as of 2 months ago. Although the statement from the oversight website is slightly confusing with mentioning half of that 44 billion is direct budget support (DBS), seems the other half must still be cash for other “development and governance programs” which most certainly aren’t paying for things using outdated military equipment. Regardless bare minimum that’s $22B DBS

In other Tahoe related content, Palisades skied pretty well today. Soft most places upper mountain, lots of stashes and pretty supportive snow for jumping off things. Also a good amount of death ice interspersed which is always fun to find when you aren’t expecting it

^^^ This. I would also mention that constitutionally Congress, not the president, has the power of the purse as a part of the separation of powers. In addition to costing lives, the president usurping his authority could cost us the democracy. Congress must stand up and assert its authority. If we want these changes (including the ones to SAC) then they should be voted on in Congress.
.
To be pedantic, the number cited by the previous poster grossly inflated the 'literal dollars' sent to Ukraine. Obviously there is a cost to material support to a beleaguered ally, it's simply not that great in relation to the federal budget. No argument here that capitulating to irredentist fascists, however, appears to be free.

Anyways, nice to see the mountains filling in.

Apparently the multiple ambulances I saw last Monday at AM were for a fatal guest vs tree on Scott somewhere. To quote myself "groomers were firmer than expected".
Fair enough, I wasn’t paying attention to earlier posts in this thread about the topic lol
I also heard on the chair yesterday from someone was there, guy slid out on ice and into a tree at Alpine. Passed away at the scene I believe. Pretty rough.
There were a few places yesterday where it was really difficult to tell what was bulletproof and what was soft pow. Almost ate shit off the Palisades when the first opened them on a patch I didn’t recognize was ice. Need to be more careful
Man... as a Dad and a coach, that scares me as much as about anything. RIP skier. Trees always win.
Snow at SB was excellent today. Jumping off of stuff was really fun. It was, again, as busy as I have recently seen (not aweful by PT standards). One of their coaches told me that they added 80 coaches and 500 kids to the academy (ski school, now) this year. Word is they are getting a new gondola. Interesting times for SB. There is more, but it is hearsay for now.
SAC was notified of the slide on Forestdale, big one, guy ended up on top after going over a cliff band, lucky!
Been hearing rumors of one out on Carson pass, from what I heard the Heli was called off, which means good news or the worst
Saw the heli headed that way from Kirkwood today around noon. Did not see where it landed.
Coming soon…. BA starts charging for 3 day avalanche forecast.

Sugar Bowl's replacing their beloved gondola?!?!?Waaaaaaaaay overdue.
Beloved by whom?
I don't know about beloved but I used to enjoy it. Shorter drive from my direction. Scenic ride right to Disney where I liked starting and ending my day.
Until my brake cable got frozen parked on that exposed lot on a wet and windy and and ultimately cold enough to freeze up day. Had to drive down about 1000 feet before my emergency brake released. I smelled like on of those rigs.
But that wasn't the gondola's fault.
