This shit even predates the internet. Lonely Planet blew many cool spots back in the day w printed books. Just try to imagine what Waikiki looked like a hundred years ago before you tag some low key place you “found” whether it’s here or anywhere. The locals can do their own marketing if they want to

Fair statements. Japan skiing is still great. Any Epic resort has the same if not worse issues. 70 million more people on earth every year, everything is getting more crowded.

I went in 2012 and again in 2015, and the difference was striking even in that 3yr span. I've always considered going back since people still seem to be having plenty of fun, but man, tough call when every winter it feels like "everybody" is over there in Jan/Feb.

We shouldn't forget that the shadow of Covid still lingers out there- and when it comes to tourism there have been YEARS of pent-up demand, as people have planned, saved, and schemed for their dream Japan trip. Shit- most of the tourists this season will likely never come back. And of those that do- very few can afford to do it regularly. When combining this with the negative feedback loop we are seeing on Insta, one could have predicted this would be a "peak" visitation year.

Highly doubt a few grainy pics and tales of derring-do from the old and lame on here make much difference to Japan resort traffic vs all the pros and the likes of Imlukesnow with his 100k followers posting up epic footage on IG every 2 minutes

lol Imlukesnow's comments are hilarious. The guy is completely oblivious to the fact that he's blowing up spots that were "not busy" and arguing with people. My favorite thing is if you look at at his posts he only got to 100k followers very recently, celebrated it, and then clearly keeps it going for more. High off his own fake self worth right now.

https://www.instagram.com/imlukesnow that's the luke snow guy. also forecasts for opensnow interestingly enough. surprise surprise. side note, be happy open snow's forecasts in JP are so inaccurate and less detailed than the rest of the world. I'm sure that'll change soon though.

Instagram/ Facebook and lukesnow are minor threats. AI will exponentially threaten these secret spots. Every photo/post/ comment and anyone who ever had there location settings on will be gobbled up and spit out to any search within seconds. No effort required….

I was heckling his ass last season because he posted up a video of him side-slipping his ass on a deep powder run and calling it “epic”.

He’s like the definition of average, and it makes his Instagram-led destruction even more hurtful to witness .

Leave on Friday starting our trip. Stops in Hawaii first then Tokyo, start skiing on 2-21 and forecast looks sunny for all 6 days. Total bummer if that holds but is what it is!

Well Tokyo was cool. Arrived at Rusutsu yesterday and skied today….plenty of snow on the ground but no snow while we’re here blows. Also this resort is pretty awful, like a big cruise ship on land. S and E aspects were baked today…..resort skiing is gonna be poor and our cst days seem doomed too….what an absolute crushing blow.

Of course….we primarily skied Isola….can see it would be incredible with fresh…..awesome trees. The hotel is what’s awful, like a cruise ship.
