Really nice day up on Baker today - windy at times, but the snow was ripper wind buff and pow everywhere. You can almost drive to the trailhead. And we skied into a Brocken spectre coming down Grouse Creek which was quite spectacular:

I've got some Heritage Labs skis showing up this week and I don't have the tools/space/skills to mount them myself, but I don't particularly trust evo to handle a non standard mount (no stamp on the topsheet/sidewall); any recs for places I could trust to take care of them? Or any kind souls in North Seattle I could bring a 6 pack and get some help?

If you are willing to drive to Bellingham I know Gunder is doing mounts (has a full shop of jigs and a way to release test I believe for ~$60 for mags)...additionally, I am also in Bellingham and could help you out too depending on binding. Shoot me a PM if interested

Absolute stunner of a week here at Mission. Great fast grippy groomers. The clear nights, mild temperatures and low sun angle is working magic on the snow. Variable and challenging off piste around the margins, bumps are well formed and chalky.

Yep. Back before i would "mount your own fucking skis", i would take a sharpie and draw a line on each ski, label it "MIDSOLE", and draw a few arrows leaders point to it with the text "mount here". Basically making it totally idiot (high AF shop rat) proof.


But again, that was before i realized i could do infinite mounts myself with a single $30 drill bit (and whatever glue happened to be laying around) instead of paying upwards of $80 a pop for a mount.

Buy the Snowli Double Step drill bit, and your bases are covered for both normal alpine skis, AND skis with metal in them.

NWAC observation for Snoqualmie yesterday:

There is no way to sugar coat how poor the travel conditions are right now. Crusts abound, supportable and breakable. The surface in the forest resembles a coral reef. It requires a lot of caution and patience right now to avoid injury if your route takes you downhill through the trees without the benefit of a well-worn path.

Tuesday was warmer and the hard freezes hadn’t really hit yet, so things softened up quickly.





Today was even sunnier, but the cold temps have stopped the freeze-thaw cycle. You could hear people across the valley from how loud their skis were on the ice. North facing was better, but sharp edges are a must right now.

So I went and snagged a pair of these for pennies, and breathed a little life into them:

Anyone make it up to Stevens lately? Was up early in the week and on piste was still good. Curious is the freeze-thaw cycle kicked in yet. Friends are headed up tomorrow.

Yup. Groomers were fine but highly variable. Did one lap up seventh and then stuck to groomers. A few conditions checks off piste brought me back to the groomers. Tried railing later in the day and chattered right out of my pin bindings (poor choice today but doing a final dial in before a trip).

Lots of bodies everywhere and I heard at one point that patrol ran out of toboggans.

So yeah… keep it in control and in the sun on the groomers would be my advice.

Planning to head up to Hurricane Ridge this weekend for some touring. With the gate opening at 9AM, I am assuming people get there earlier to wait in line and guarantee they get up. Any recommendations on when to arrive at the entrance station in the morning?
