    Holy fuck, Reed

Fwiw, Reed was unquestionably not skiing that line, he was assessing the conditions. He is safe and conservative and has a family. And he is not insane. He and I spoke at great length about this, and I’ll share those conversations at his celebration of life, God willing.

I know you weren’t suggesting that Dan. Just saying for the benefit of those without context.

He would have been, assuming he was in downhill mode, descending the ridge back to the summer trail. Without question. Just made one mistake. And God took him home in His wisdom.

I mean he had his dog with him. No way he was going steep. I know him so well in the mountains. He just got too close to the edge, either going up or down, I cannot bring myself to read the UAC report yet.

Quiet conversations at transitions with Reed were thoughtful, intellectual, philosophical, profound, funny, loving. Some of my favorite times in my life.

He is always fuckin steezy out there too. Reed walks with an impediment in shoes, but in snowboarding boots he's a smooth fluid graceful creature, at one out there.

Reed is my favorite touring partner. He's always stoked to be out there, just like me. No matter how obnoxious or bullshit the conditions, we always said it beats work, and a morning in the mountains is better than just about anything else. I don't think I ever heard Reed complain in the mountains, really about anything, but especially about what we were doing, the weather, the conditions, how lost we were, how badly I sandbagged him on the objective, no matter how ridiculously steep and zig zagged and Wasatch skimo core I set the skinner, no matter how much hot air I blew lol. He and his daughter Isabel came to the Powder Keg one year to support me. I mean there is nobody else like Reed.

And this is some heavy shit, but we talked about it. Reed would have known from the moment the slide started he was probably going to die, and he would have known the instant he was buried that he definitely was going to die. I hope he was able to make himself an air pocket. And he immediately accepted what happened, and spent the last hours or minutes of his life thinking about his family, praying for them, and remembering them.

I am hoping to talk in person with at least one person who was part of the recovery, because I really want to know, just for my own healing and closure, exactly what happened. But I'm not ready really to hear it right now, and I'd like to hear it in person. Sfotex maybe can you help with this?

    Holy fuck, Reed

Btw that story Ty posted about Reed hucking that cliff in the Y is the pure and unadulterated truth. The baddest and raddest thing I've ever seen anyone do in the mountains, bar none.

Reed hucks this thing, sticks the landing like it’s a little lip in a kids terrain park, blows a huge cloud of snow as he stops, and just gives me and Ty a huge smile.

MB, your posts are so poignant, I feel your pain oozing out of the screen. I hope you are able to find peace, brother.

Speaking with Reed's son Jackson, and being able in some small way to comfort him, is giving me enormous solace. I'm going to give his family these 2 marbles that my dear friend @beakglass made, they are the most beautiful things I've ever owned, they have given me peace and solace, and it is time to pass them on to Reed's family.

The pendant on the left is blown glass, hand made for me by the artist, Nederland local Michael Bard. It's rad, and Jackson is rad, and I'm giving it to him. The marbles are blown glass, fumed. The middle marble is, to me, celestial and a conduit for those who have passed. It has given me enormous comfort, it is the most beautiful thing I have ever owned, and @beakglass the artist who makes it, here in Portland, said that's exactly what he wants his work to be and mean, to represent the perfection and beauty of God and the world. The marble on the right represents healing. They are fumed glass, fumed with silver and gold, hand made by Dave Buechner, here in Portland. I've never seen anything like his work. Pictures in no way do it justice.

Oh and I asked Beak to make a marble in memory of Reed, and he's going to. And he is in full-throated support of giving those marbles to Reed's family. I know they're just marbles, but when you see them in person, you will get it.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I want to say more but a lot of us in this community have gone through this and there are no words. Your pics and emotions show how much this friend made an impact on this world.

Hey bro, this post hit me. I hope your bro, Reed, can rest in peace. I believe he can. And I appreciate your posting here to celebrate his life. That's beautiful of you. You remind me of me.

Anyway, I've had a few near-death experiences and I just want to type here that when I knew it was inevitable, I was at peace. It was those times when I thought I had a fighting chance that were hard. But if I knew, everything was peaceful.

If you think he went down in a slide, I just want to share some reassurance that he was most likely at peace.

This is coming from someone who has been in those slides. It's a mindset that we have trouble expressing to people. They have trouble understanding how I could have been at peace... but I was.

    God bless, bro.

We looked at the slide in West Monitor and dropped Wills out to Silver Fork lodge. Requires a transition for a snow boarder. No complaints.
Back at the car, I said "don't go steep' knowing he'd be out on his own.
Went to Wills again today, questioning the why? all fucking day.
    So sad.
Gutted. We never met, but he always talked about his times in the mountains with you. I hope you are bearing the hurt as best you can. Much love.

    Holy fuck, Reed

One small memory: I have been saying we “skied” because that’s what Reed always called it, even though he was a splitboarder. Too much of a mouthful, too annoying to say splitboarding, so we’ve just always called it skiing.
