Hey friends, a dear friend of mine, Reed Heil, has died in an avalanche in Salt Lake City. I wrote some words here:

I'm flying out for the funeral, speaking, coordinating some celebration of life activities, and trying to be there for Reed's wife and 3 kids like they were there for me. I got the flight covered on miles and I have a place to stay thanks to the ski community, but I am really stuck financially. I quit software to drive Uber, and I haven't been able to drive because of dealing with all this.

I'm $1100 overdrawn in my checking account and gotta pay my rent $1600 and car payment $500, if there's any way you can help me out with a couple hundred bucks or something, I will pay you back as soon as I can. I'm 8 months clean and sober, I can have my psychiatrist send the drug tests. I am just not really sure where else to turn right now.

Hey I never skied it. If and only if it’s safe, when I’m out there Jan 16-19, Reed’s favorite run is flanagans. I mean he never stopped talking about it. Always wanted to take me but we just never did. So if you wanna honor his memory, maybe let’s try to hit flanagans IF it is safe.

Shared a few skinners and turns with what id describe as one hell of a stoked human being and member of this tribe

Sent some money your way via Venmo. We were at Alta that day skiing and saw the helicopter flying. It didn’t have a ski basket on the side and made several trips into that zone. My 13 year old was asking a lot of questions. It sucked to watch knowing that it was probably an accident situation they were going in for. Your write ups have been helpful for me and my family to process. My son has read every report on it. Hope you have safe travels to mourn the passing of your friend and celebrate what a great man he was to many.

i never skied with Reed but I will be forever grateful to you for teaching me how to move efficiently in the backcountry, ski rad shit early in the morning, and be as safe as you can while doing so. i remember you always told me stories about Reed too.
