Early riser still not totally full at noon. Doubtful that it will fill. They must have planned for a big day or maybe just practicing. Pali maze was built way to big, employees parked in the pullouts down the hill, etc.

Thought to myself ‘well this seems unnecessary’ the second I saw both of those things. Guess we’ll see what the next week and a half is like.

I’ll be out in the morning for a few hours if anyone is out. Black and forest green dakine jacket, black pants, and I’ll be on last years devastators with gold pivots.

early riser didn't come close to actually filling today

Possum and I were able to link up (great guy!). Next time, Leshphilling77.

There’s still some fun chalky lines out there. Looking forward to some new snow hopefully soon though. The bottom of pali is absolutely beat.

Monday was way busier than Sunday. Early riser almost full by 10. I guess people don’t want to deal with reservations and pay for parking.

Great to meet and ski with you Goat!

I’m heading up shortly to find all the sharks hiding under the 3” of fresh.

Pretty fun out there this morning with a little fresh to ski, definitely made sure to uncover some of those rocks again

Took a lap down the beavers hoping to find some trees open, which they were not, and loafer was slightly terrifying without a good edge on the ski I had out today.

OMFG they put numbers on the snowstake! I wonder if Alterra made Al do it? This is hudge. I joking bitched about it for years just because I thought it was hilarious that they thought were too cool to put numbers on the snowstake.

As much bitching as I've done about the parking BS, I gotta say, it sure is nice to ski on a holiday weekend and have 0 lift lines, show up at 11 on a Saturday and roll right into a parking spot on the beach. If $150 extra gets me that then I'm ok with it. We will see what happens in the spring.

I heard from a bartender that pass sales are down 40%. The parking thing really pissed people off and now they are struggling to recover. Oh well, not my circus, not my monkeys.

^^^ isn’t this what they wanted though?

It seems like crowds have been way down at all of the ski areas/resorts this holiday season….at least that’s what it feels like and what I keep hearing anecdotally. Are you all seeing the same?

I doubt it is what they wanted, but it might justify them going full Ikon next season. Which would be shitty, or cool, depending on how you look at it.

My guess is that full Ikon will be unlimited next year and base Ikon will stay at 5 days, which would really be a win-win for both Alterra and A-Basin skiers IMO.

Unlimited at A Basin would push a lot of the Denver crowd to go full ikon, therefore justifying Alterra's investment. Also, since the majority of fair-weather skiers will still have the base pass, limiting the base to 5 days will keep the place from getting overrun.

been saying this but the parking thing really does open the door for some type of change with the ikon access. Time will tell but I am damn near certain they want more people there on weekends/ holiday compared to what they have been getting this season. Also what did they just think that being the only resort in summit county without a free parking option was going to go over totally fine? come on. has been great for me and my skiing experience though, thats for sure.

Very warm in silverthorne today. did anyone get out today? was the snow a bit heavier?

Looks like Al and Alterra are the ones eating a bag of dicks this year.

Oh man, today was pretty good. Rolled in at 12 and got a beach spot, knocked around for a few runs on Pali, snow was good, met some friends at the Refugio for a few, too some more runs in the dagwoods, wife decided to come up so hung out till closing bell. Got some nachos and beers in the Aframe. Beautiful sunset driving home.

Talking to some friends that work up there, I'm going back on my boycott of the F&B, at least for now. Employees and bartenders need our love. This season is a one off, like the year they went off the epic. Sucks for tipped employees, but holy shit is it awesome for skiers. Now we just need the weather to cooperate.

Per Al, it was over the top incredible. Think he’s trying to hype everyone up?

“The skiing today was over the top incredible. I think we are up to almost two feet of snow since Tuesday. Each day more and more terrain is getting open. With all the new snow, I had phenomenal runs today in Thick and Thin, Beaver Bowl, Jetta and Glockenspiel Glade. On top of that, the North Side skiing was so sweet on The Spine, North Glade, Standard and the 3rd Alley. As skiers and riders sometimes we wait and wait for the best snow. Well, the goods have arrived. The snow is here. Monday looks to be another exceptional powder day. Tuesday and Wednesday should be crisp, winter beautiful ski days and the snow may start up again Wednesday night. It just keeps getting better.

The time to ski is now.”

    No way.

Unlimited at one resort is a value proposition that is roughly rational but largely emotional. "Pay extra for unfettered access to this one thing.,, and you are IN. Don't worry about rationing. You can decide to whatever you want whenever you want!"

That falls flat on its fucking face when it requires not just a non-negligible fee-per-use, but also requires an up front plan and commitment to seize a limited number of reservations but you are further limited in how many you can get your hands on at once.

Under the reserved parking system, going Unlimited only appeals to midweek skiers and "crack-of-noon-club" locals. That is also the crew that might actually have bought an A-basin pass.

Similarly, Vail and BC are unlimited on Epic, and you don't even have to reserve the parking. That hasn't converted very many Denver skiers to full Epic. Full Epic for Vail/BC skiers is for people who want to ski during the holidays on Epic Local blackout dates but don't care about the unlimited factor so much... offering it unlimited is of little cost to seller. It is nice for locals who need the unlimited access, but don't work for the Empire.

I'd say a big statement like over the top incredible would be the 10/11 season, when we were skiing insanely deep snow in May on a 100"+ base.

Al’s comparing it to last year when nothing was open until mid January.
