Still not what I'm talking about. There doesnt seem to be much urgency to get Headwall or KT open. I'm not talking about after storms. I'm talking about a seasonal opening at a mountain that is getting sizable crowds for existing terrain.

Me also. Always been my home hill and I love it there. They rocked it this year getting terrain prepped and open.

Since starting work at PT a few years back I've developed a love for the terrain at that place. It's truly world class. I'm not saying that I could do it better, but I feel like everything is financially motivated there these days. That entire place could be open right now. Certainly the upper mountain (Headwall, Summit and Solitude). I just wish they showed some stoke about our early season conditions and hustled to get lifts open.

We've got friends at SB that have tried to get me to join their freeride program and move my kids over. It could happen, but I really like the guys I work with right now. With the way schools work, my son will probably need to move to a charter or private school to work with his skiing schedule. The SB Academy may be our best choice. That could push our decision a bit.

For now, I love having the option to ski both.

Sorry if it sounds like I'm talking shit. I just love to ski.

Edit: plug that bag in at home!! Nothing better on a cold pow day than a heated boot bag. I juice mine for an hour or two when I wake up to get a good bake going.

OTOH The best time to ski Headwall is when the lift is closed and RT is open.

There is a segment in the newest David Attenborough documentary on Netflix that covers the migration of locusts.
I had no idea how devastating and terrible those beasts are but the crew did an amazing job filming and presenting. Truly jaw dropping.

I recall skiing with you on straight skis on a powder day. Or so it at least seemed.

Today looked dreamy. I almost made a plan to bringing up a dehumidifier to the cabin tomorrow.... but my buddy said there was no need, so no skiing for me.

So it was. Always a powder hound, never on powder skis. Those were the 198cm Atomic Arc 18 with the special racing tips for getting around trees. Skied them forever. Flattened a lot of Kirkwood powder with them. Hard to demo on a powder day, eh? "Get in the lift line" wins over standing in the rental shop. Also the budget argument, skipping new skis meant I could buy a pass or a skilease share. Finally came into some dentist money and upgraded to Coombacks, I felt the true powder skis of that time were too heavy, coming from straight skis. Then I got gimped before making it fully to the modern age.

Anyway, now I feel like I'm old, and need to see what I've been missing while I still can. I've been skiing some Q105s and they're nice enough, but it's time to experience some float and unlocked tails. Maybe next Sunday. I'll tune and wax these Hellbents by then. Switch to the car, baby! Now I need some pure carving skis to keep the powder gods honest.

It doesn't seem to be the case anymore. If it doesn't involve a ball it isn't a sport. This is second hand info. We've yet to deep dive as we have 2 + years to figure it out and make sure the kid wants to continue thus path.

If any mags have first hand info I'd love to hear it.

Maybe they’re going to Forest, but I’m pretty sure they’re going to Truckee HS. They’ve been on the FIS tour all fall, including training time in South America during the summer start of the school year. A HS senior and not traveling with parents.

So much glorious untouched upper mountain snow… covered in rain crust. Ugh. Hilarious to see charges that were tossed on the palisades that went sliding down to the bottom and then exploded.

On the other hand that should be great for building a solid base.

South facing at AM softened by late morning. Sunspot was nice. People were skiing the far side of Wolvy but I chose not to brave the icy traverse to get there. It would have been nice to have had Wolvy saddle as a groomed option, but no.

More second hand info for you, but I've seen similar to BodyWhomper -> I understand that Truckee & North Tahoe HS have Athletic/Independent Study contracts that excuse absences for travel (training & competition).

Dunno how it works to just skip class to ride lifts during the week though, but do think it is worth noting as I think this is a fantastick level of support for non-ball sports from THS.

My info comes from the Nordic side (where workouts are done before lifts/schools open), so if you see a Johnny Moseley-type giving a bunch of skinny kids wedgies in the THS parking lot, they could probably all give you more info.

On the other hand, kids aren’t going to school when sick like they used to, so that’s good.

My friends daughter has been racing since elementary school. She transferred to Donner Trails, went to Alder Creek, then started HS at home school. Last year she went to Truckee High and struggled with their independent study. She's back to home school.

That's my only first hand outside my wife asking about it and being told that Big Mountain skiing didn't qualify for independent study.

We have friends with kids at all of the local middle and elementary schools. They each do it a bit differently. I think some of it depends upon the school and some of it upon the student. This year is a bit of a test run since it's the first year our son is missing full day Friday (along with 1/2 day weds and thurs). We'll see how it goes at Alder Creek MS. We're on week 2.

I am skiing Jackson hole all week, tons of kids skiing the pow days here too. Definitely not in school after a big dump.

I skied from the house Monday and my timing was excellent. Snow turned to rain while I was under the tailgate putting the skis back in the car. After a short tour up Maggie’s with whiskey Monday I was certain things had gone from hero to zero. But I spent the afternoon at Sierra and it skied really well

This is drifty, but affects the local Tahoe communities, the “butts in chairs” ADA financial model for schools in CA needs to change. The CA schools that I’ve been watching are all having a current and/or future major fiscal problem. Staff cuts, program cuts, etc. Around me, it’s back to high encouragement for kids to be coming to school when they’re sick, unless they have a fever or symptoms of noro virus.

Even in SF, there's kids at our schools that are super serious about skiing. Couple kids competing in moguls in my daughter's class and have to miss a fair amount of school but being a private school may be a bit easier. The Spring is the hardest time of year to get in their ski days with soccer and baseball really ramping up.

The kids should stay in school, go to a good college, go to dental school, and ski a minimum of 4 days/week for the rest of their lives. Not counting the month in Europe every year.
