Hope things work out better for her than they did for Bill Johnson.

Oof, I think they will. She's no Bill Johnson. On the other hand, I don't expect to see her on the podium, either. But if she manages it, it will be damned impressive.

I just don't want to see her get seriously injured.

I called total bullshit. She’s too interested in glamour, designer clothes, and being seen. Maybe she would do OK as a starter, but with all of her ailments and recent knee replacement there is no way that she could compete with anyone in the field.

To be clear, it's a GS race. 4 of her 82 wins are in GS.
Just making the flip at this point would be a surprise.

Confirmed she's going to give it another shot. She's an icon, but at 40, I wonder how competitive she can still be. Would love to see her make it to a podium

This makes me chuckle. The Mike Tyson/Joe Frazier of skiing. I know that she is an animal, but why does she really want to mess up her body more than it already is? Has any professional ski racer ever returned after a total knee replacement? I bet that she has sustained more injuries skiing than just about any other racer

It's hard for an athlete to hang them up, after being dedicated to the sport for their entire lives. So it may not make competitive sense but I get why she wants to give it a try. Good luck to her, hope she stays healthy.

She may not podium, but she could possibly get some top 25 finishes.
Which in itself, is a huge accomplishment.

Animal is right. I feel like I'm actually more worried about Vonn having a serious wreck than she is. More power to her, hopefully she's more like Dara Torres than Mike Tyson

This is probably not an advisable pursuit, but I hope it goes ok for her.

And yeah, Bill came to my mind as well because how couldn't it. Skiing DH is so fn dangerous and as much as our brains tell us we're still 20yrs old, we're not. Everything gets slightly slower. Very few can perform in their 40's and those that have, Slater or a Brady...those sports are different. Slater went down a lot...but in water and he's a pro at falling in water and holding his breath. Falling going 60+ on ice...faak.

I'll just say that I'm professionally curious to see what happens, given the fact that the next repair for both of my knees is replacement. Plus I suppose we'll just see how talented Lindsey is/was. If she can compete with the youngsters at her "advanced" age, there's no doubt she was GOAT in her prime.

On the other hand she's only 40. That's certainly old to be skiing on the World Cup circuit, but it's not that old. Again, I just don't see Vonn as a Bill Johnson type person. I wouldn't be surprised to see her suffer a career-ending injury, but I would be surprised if she suffers a life-threatening injury.

Does her presence on the US roster mean an up-and-comer doesn't get to ski?

I think 40 is old to ski WC. Just as it's old for tennis players, and hockey players (Ovie is a freak), but I think perhaps more important for skiers (skiing 140km/hr.... reflexes etc better be sharp

Will someone else get bumped. Maybe not if she's considered a wild card, but probably yes.

I am here to remind that Johan Clarey podiumed at Kitzbuhel in 2021-23, at ages 40,41, and 42. DH is just different that way, experience and read on the courses is pretty important.

I could see her doing well at the same courses she has done well at in the past- Lake Louise, Cortina, etc.

Couldn't disagree with this more. Nothing that happens this go-round has any bearing on how great she was or wasn't in her prime. She was incredibly great, and maybe at her peak she was the GOAT, but she is not the GOAT anymore. And in any event, this comeback has nothing to do with whether she was or wasn't in her prime.

Yeah, but Clarey hadn't retired with major knee issues and come back to racing. Big difference. I just don't see anything to gain from this whole thing. She's not going to get enough podiums to move anywhere up a lifetime list, so why risk not being able to walk in the future?

Lake Louise would have been good for her. Too bad it's not happening anymore. Although we would have even less terrain open than we do if they had to have been making snow for the races.
