    Rory Gallagher rocked, powpig, but...

The ultimate underrated (except by people who actually know what's up) is Danny Gatton. Maybe the best electric guitarist ever and (except for Cantdog and Tipp) none of you ever even heard of him.

yea, i saw rory open for rush at the garden in 83...he and band totally smoked...sadly he died not too long after that. props to rush for bringing him to a bigger audience.

    another fine and underappreciated guitarist:
snowy white. he was brought on as touring 2nd guitarist for floyd on animals tour, also played on the wall tour and the last couple of roger waters tours. also played a stint with thin lizzy...

record store clerk\ You guys are such fuckin dorks, everyone knows "War" and "Boy" are the best U2 albums . /record store clerk

    Kyuss was great, but
    QOTSA are badass....

Underrated: (Pre-Henry Rollins) Black Flag, Gang Green, Agent Orange (hey kids, you may have heard them. It sounds like Offspring, only better..)

Overrated: Damien Jr. 'Gong' Marley. Yeah, I said it. maybe 20% of his father's talent on a good day. Cool he does free shows, but...

Post-spearhead/disposable-heros-of-hip-hopricy Michael Franti. kinda obvious, but someone had to say it..

Fuck that, ever heard Ghost in the Machine or Zenyanna Mondata? PIL was a post sex-pistol halfass project, who were halfass themselves punk-wise. GG Allin, on the other hand, was so punk you couldnt even listen.

I'd pick War. A lot of people would say The Joshua Tree, and it certainly does have some great songs, but it also marks the point where Bono becomes a true over-indulgent wanker. I dare you to listen to "Bullet the Blue Sky" today and not laugh at Bono's pretentiousness.

OR: Offspring, Elvis Costello after "Armed Forces", Sting, Matthew Sweet, the Stones after "Exile..."

UR: Sebedoh, J. Mascis, Sonic Youth, Little Feat w/Lowell George, and lot of other people's choices like the 'Mats and Alex Chilton and Hüsker du.

I think we can split "emo" into two main waves:

    1) Punk emo, which started with Husker Du around 1982 and moved on through Rites of Spring, Dag Nasty, Fugazi, Jawbox, and so on.

    2) Post-punk emo, which started with Slint's "Spiderland" in 1991 and moved on through all the other bands (SDRE, Texas Is The Reason, etc.)

I consider pop emo (Green Day, Weezer) an outgrowth of punk emo.
i can perfectly agree on that. (and right now im scared because we think the same thoughts )

you don't have to feel sorry for being harsh, it's TGR....
    DAMN YOU,HIPPIE! I WANNA FIGHT !

    more on the list:
    under:
recover : you wanna know punk rock/ post what ever core at it's best?

the weakerthans: they would be the most famous pop band of the planet if the universe was a just one.

edit I forgot underrated: death on wednesday: social d like music with that strange outta the 80s(reminds me of the smith) voice singing the lyrics. great! i had one of their best songs(stranded) in one of my season videos (storm cycle).

and jimmy eat world... (yeah they're sellout some of the best pop songs ever and when you have written something like "no sensitivity, praise chorus, anderson mesa.... etc etc." you can die as a happy man.)

    over:
placebo : their hits work in an indie club, but only a certain sort of girls can endure this for an entire album length

Single most overrated band (especially in their own opinion) = OASIS.

I'm still looking for the Danny Gatton stuff to get rediscovered, remastered, and re-released on a Criterion worthy CD collection.

My favorite U2 album is "October." All of their albums up to and including Achtung Baby were great. I don't care if you agree or not. Disclaimer: I have recently fallen out of love with them, and did not see them live for the first time since 1982 when they played in my town last year. Bono is just too much to take.

Underrated: Bauhaus, Joy Division (I was listening to both in the car yesterday driving home from New Jersey.)

    Revered but still underrated:

    Joni Mitchell
    Mingus
    Little Walter
    Freddie King
    Neil Young
    James Brown
    The Beach Boys

    Very good but definitely overrated:

    David Bowie
    John Lennon
    Velvet Underground
    BB King
    Pink Floyd
    Eric Clapton

    Just plain overrated:

    Elvis
    Michael Jackson
    The Fucking Doors

The popular choice that is correct:

U2 (that guitarist with the stupid name I refuse to say is so....fucking.... tedious. I think he learned to play this when he was a kid and decided to make an entire career out of playing inferior variations.

    Refused
The pixies ( although every musician and nerd knows their worth)
Rage against the machine. ( yeah they're famous but in their heyday were listened to by idiots and their later Releases suck, but the Debut is unbelievable)

    Over
    The strokes
    Red hot chili peppers
The smiths ( sorry but their lamenting is annoying and morrissey has always been an idiot)
LED Zeppelin ( representing all that 70s grandeur stuff. It is like Jazz. They just Show you how well they can play and how perfect they Produce albums are but never touch the soul...)

I could go on forever... [emoji3]

I should have known I iven been in this thread nearly 20 years ago. [emoji3]

Overrated: Radiohead....I just can't seem to like them or get into them. I'm told they're incredible...but: no.

Under: Sly & The Family Stone.
It makes perfect sense...until you think about it.

I suspect there's logic behind the madness, but I'm too dumb to see it.

agreed- I really have no interest in paying hundreds to see big bands in big arenas where you are drawn to a huge video monitor because you can see them better that way- versus a great local or indie band in smaller venue where you can get within 20 feet and get the personal connection.

the pixies are hardly underrated anymore after reforming 20 years ago. they were underrated when for some reason no one had heard their many classics. but that was before and we’re in now now. and now includes use of their songs in covers and soundtracks blah blah blah.

would you have a case that frank black is underrated? definitely. the breeders? probably. but the pixies with 100$ tickets?

    no, overruled.
