I want your opinion on Trails.
Not that you asked me, but I've played Trails about 4 times over the years. I personally think it's killer. It feels like there is good variety to the holes, beautiful, and such a lovely\peaceful location. Many rank it near the top, but for me, when I am headed to Bandon my mental focus is links. So...it's down my list. I think Pacific is the strongest. (splitting hairs as they are all simply fantastic)

    How do you rate it?

Yeah it’s fun, but definitely not the same - or so I would imagine. I’ve had 2 long time golfer friends pop their hole in one cherry this year. I’ve just conceded to the idea that it will happen when I’m like 70 and I’ll get 2 that year.

Backed up last weeks 38 with a 40 this week but of the money as usual. Still cant get my back yard swing out on the course but I can get almost there from anywhere. Dminus chipping did me in. The same guy has won 3 weeks in a row but that's the format working. I'd rather be lucky than good.

So after a 20 year hiatus from the game I’ve gotten back into it this summer because there’s not a lot else to do in the desert. I played competitively in high school and have been hitting a bucket of balls near daily and playing 9 a couple times of week when I can sneak it in while the kiddo naps. Consistently shooting high 30’s to low 40s on a bad day. Crux seems to be my putting these days.

I upgraded to a PXG driver and hybrid and am quite happy with them, picked up and restored some vokey wedges and they’re sweet. It’s time to upgrade the irons. I know my fit. I’m torn between a an improvement iron which would probably be best short term and something aimed at a lower handicap golfer. I don’t want to outgrow them in short order.

What’s everybody liking in that 10 handicap range. I like PXG simply due to the heroes discount but am open to other options. Takomo seems popular but the reviews have some QC concerns and they don’t do undersized grips for my baby hands. I don’t really have a place to demo clubs nearby. What do the maggots like/suggest?

Can't help with the irons. Last time I was a 10 I had some used irons forged that were 3/4" short for me and I just replace my 20 y o set with the same clubs. Practice putting 5 x/day for 10 minutes. Anywhere.

10 handicap … low 40’s on a bad day? Does not compute.

Regardless- it’s 100% worth getting custom fitted clubs - the brand doesn’t matter.

I WAS a 10 then with the short sticks. I'm now a 15.5, My first set of my System 3000 irons were custom fitted. The club fitter said I was a 42 reg and could buy off the rack. My aim is to shoot my age, so sub 80 is the goal for a few more years.

"players cavity" category...Callaway Apex CB, Mizuno Pro 243, JPX 923/923 Tour, Titleist T100, 620 CB, etc

If you're consistently high 30s you're a single digit cap and the irons they market for elite golfers are for you. They aren't hard to hit and they're very consistently with distance and do what you want them to do vs just launching the ball...and they provide the feedback good golfers need.

Consistently in the high 30’s is like a 3-5 handicap. Anyway, anyone under a 15 handicap should take the time to get fitted with a launch monitor. For some (most) people it can make a huge difference.

I have noticed many more players with who started 3 years ago with some lessons holding a sub12 HC's today than back in the day when the driver was as big as your fist. And all the par 4's were uphill and into the wind :-) .

Regarding iron sets. I’m a 12-15 handicap depending on the year. I got fitted for some pxg irons a few years ago. Certainly gained some distance and they explode when you hit the sweet spot. But distance wasn’t consistent at all and feel was sub par. Went back to playing some old mizuno mp-32 blades I bought years ago. And I’m playing way better. Played a solo round of two balls today, ball 1=82, ball 2=83. Honestly the smaller head has me making way better contact. I’ve tried hitting a few other players distance irons and game improvement irons lately, and the blades are just better in every regard except distance (but that’s probably just the jacked lofts on new clubs). Sure I can’t hit the 3 or 4 worth a shit but that’s why they invented hybrids. And I’m hitting my whole bag better since going back to blades and heavy shafts. Mizuno isn’t even selling 3 irons in tour clubs as there’s been no mizuno player on tour bagging a 3 iron in years. Anyways, after convincing myself that I needed something more forgiving I found the opposite was true.

I play blades and I sometimes have a toey miss. I might lose 5 yds on a terrible strike

I've played blades and player's cavity forever. There's no difference in forgiveness. Blades just feel better and easier to flight ball down in the wind or under trees

Turf interaction is way better with a blade IMO too

Long irons are different story unless you have superhuman club speed. I play players cavity with slightly higher launching shafts in long irons...blade with slightly higher launching shaft in 6 iron. Blades with low launching shaft 7-pw

FWIW, these days fitting sessions are really more about which shaft is the best fit, more so than the club head. Both for woods and irons.

Playing vintage Ping Eye2 BeCu inherited from my late father in law and some random Rawlings 1,3,5 woods also free.

I suck, so what difference will paying money for new clubs do. I need lessons and practice.
When I get a consistent swing, maybe I'll get fitted for my forever old man clubs.

I also whittled the irons down to just a 5, 7, 9, pw, sw. No sense lugging a bunch of irons around trying to get distances right when I can't make consistent contact. I'm not worried about scoring until my ball striking is better. Then I'll put the even clubs back in play.

I do have a beautiful Scotty Cameron design studio putter that is magical.

TM warranty dept is the shit. So are their drivers

I bought a newish Sim2 off ebay that exploded on me yr 2. It wasn't under warranty since it wasn't from an authorized dealer. They sent me a Steakth+ no questions asked.

I got a tiny chip in the carbon from the tee on the bottom of the Stealth+ face last week...not under warranty since it's way past the original purchase date of the sim2...that doesn't even qualify anyway.

    They're sending me a Qi10ls replacement

    LFG!

Got my new lowest handicap 14.3!
I would love to stay somewhere 10-12, shoot 80's and peak into 70's a few times a year.
I think I can make it happen next 2-3 years.

Nice progress. The road from 14 to 10 is paved by chipping and putting skillz honed by practice every day IME. What's the green speed of your living room carpet? Hard wood floors? Mine are 8 and 14 respectively

Fashion suggestion. Maybe try some of the new golf shoes for fall golf.

Living room is carpet with two cats.
    Tough practice setup.

I don’t think I’m allowed to buy anymore golf shoes.
Especially I added 5 more pairs of G/FORE after this picture.

I've never gotten this much improvement in just a head change. Face is HOT and spin is noticeably lower. Absolute lasers and accurate as it gets. Great feel too...similar to Sim2. Stealth feel was garbage.

    Stealth+ was a downgrade from Sim2. Qi10 made a huge leap

I picked up a Qi10 7 wood. Throwing away the hybrid. I've yet to get it on the course, but it sure feels nice at the range! Forgiving, and a nice yardage. Currently it fits in after the 3 wood. (old 3w). I may pickup a 5 wood, but don't think it's a priority and this was absolutely not a cheap club...

    Nice.

High loft 3w(16.5*) is where it's at. It's actually a 4w. Modern 3w goes so fucking far and are really unnecessary...4w easier to hit and gives you just a little more distance than a 5w...which is usually the same distance as most people's 3h too.

I switched to driver-16.5 3w-utility 3i few yrs ago and like that way better than the driver-5w-3h i used to use. Hybrids SUCK off the tee. Way to spinny

Slapped it around for a 40 gross 34 net in my money league yesterday. 3 GIR. Made a putt from off the green for par. Won $40. Adjusted for my weak crappy swing by going up 2 clubs on approach shots. "It's not how, it's how many" a pro once told me.

Ha, I'm stealing that. I won closest to the pin at my high school reunion golf game last summer using one of those 5 iron/wood hybrids on a 150 yard par 3. Took a lot of shit from the serious golfers but... closest to the pin is closest to the pin no matter what club you use.

Did the same this summer playing The Pines at Grandview Lodge in Minnesota. I was at least two clubs over everybody in my group but stuck it 8 feet from the pin. I swing easy, what can I say.
