Distance inside a home or on a field or something? We go feet.
Anything you need to drive to? Kilometers.
Height? Feet and inches.
Weight? Of a person: pounds. Of meat at the deli: grams (but if that meat is a large cut, like a brisket or something, then back to pounds).
Temperature? Outside: Celsius. Inside (home): Fahrenheit. Inside (car): Celsius or Fahrenheit. Swimming pool: Fahrenheit.
Depth? Feet.
Wood? Feet.
Walking distance to something? Meters.
Volume? Of gas or beverages: Milliliters or liters. Of paint: Gallons.
Speed? Real-time measurement would be Kilometers per hour. Unless you are describing it, then it's miles per hour.

You get the hang of it pretty quick. Best to just not think about it and let it happen.
