Just got back from a few days at my in laws’ cottage (not camp) in the 1,000 islands. Clayton is a pretty cool town for a good old fashioned family vacation. Good/cheap restaurants, great beaches, easy fishing for kids, not too crowded, and the boat museum lets you take out those cool old skiffs popular in the area free for nothin’.
Alex Bay 500 go kart track is awesome. The cars go about 30, track is a mile long and there aren’t any guard rails. I had just as much fun as the kids.
The only thing missing is a Stewart’s- you still have to go down to Watertown for that.
We checked out the Indian river area, which turned out to be halfway decent trout fishing and a beautiful canoe area that nobody at any of the bait stores gave a shit about. They did, however, assure me that “fly poles don’t work around here.” Thanks for the tip, Daryl.
Sitting here in the shit show known as Bozeman, I am genuinely perplexed by the underutilization of public land and waterways up in the- what did we decide…southern Canadian plains?. Not complaining and I don’t want it to change, I just don’t get it.
Goes back to the unrealized potential that defines Upstate NY
we got lots o’ public land and waterways to choose from. tends to spread out the folks using it. tain’t like the west…
fact.
Yeah, I s'pose it's mostly that, but the upper upstate contingency is (somehow) even less intrigued by their great resources than the eastern upstates folks that I grew up with in the LG region. Plenty of fat guys in bass boats in Canadian Cabo, but nary a canoe/raft/kayak in sight outside of the big bodies of water like the Saint Lawrence or Ontario.
Watertown/the Black river is a great example of this. When I look at that river, I see fun sustained whitewater with great access and a dedicated surf wave downtown, ok trout fishing, and even "Steelhead" fishing in the lower reaches. It's an awesome river by any measurement.
Back in college, my now-wife brought me to Watertown to meet her parents. I brought my fly rod with me as an excuse to escape, and her entire family thought/still thinks I am absolutely nuts for going down to wade fish the river. In their eyes, and they are outdoorsy-ish people, The Black is nothing more than a dirty, dangerous place where you will never return from if you get your toes wet in it.
Seems like the historically downtrodden town could do a little more to capitalize on the resource as a weekend destination for Syracuse people if they gave half a fuck, but I don't see it happening any time soon.

Sure, the copious wads of old rebar are a bummer/hazard, but it's an awesome river by most other measurements.

Things pick up starting 4 th of July.
I'm an Upstate afficianado and as close as I've been I've never made it to the 1000 Islands. It's definitely an underutilized zone even for people that live close. As mentioned Syracuse is close and Rochester and Utica are within weekend road trip distance for most people. I don't think the area cares enough to try for those dollars. Unrealized potential... As far as bigger destination back when, my grandparents took my dad and uncle up there from Far Rockaway in the late 50s. It was an overnight trip each way back then. It must've been quite the slog in a 56 Olds 88.
yeah, nah... looks can be deceiving. turns out, the black is fairly nasty by the time it gets all the way up to watertown. lots of dairy farm land up stream. not yer mom n pop operations neither. they gots lots o' liquified shit they gotta get rid of and they use it to irrigate the hell out of their land next to the river. rains come and wash all that shit downstream. not unusual for rafting below watertown to be suspended for high fecal coliform numbers... and that's just normal operations. from time to time we also flush enough extra shit to attract the attention of the new york times..

and just for shits and giggles, google "watertown, black river, and drowning"... plenty of stories o'folks what don't come back from their lil day trip to the riverside.
there is a reason the family thinks you're nuts...
fact.
Holy shit. I had no idea. Not only ag poo, human poo, too. On purpose!!! Borderline unbelievable.

Per the drownings, I think a bit of the "Don't look inside" concept from Stewart's napkins might be a contributing factor.
"The river is powerful and dangerous, and you need to do XYZ to enjoy it without dying." might be a better message than "Don't go near it, it's the devil!"?
We'll see I guess- I live a stone's throw from the Gallatin, a river that is also coincidentally loaded with illegally dumped human shit and experiences occasional drownings. Even with the unresolved poo factor, I am still engraining the second message over the first to my 3 y/o.

Has anyone heard from TR lately? I miss his sarcasm and wit. Aldo, do you have his contact info?
Not a peep since April or so. Was thinking maybe he just went to the Hamptons for the summer.
I still call it The Jake.
Hope that fancy motorcycle of his didn’t get him into trouble…
fact.
Yeah, it would be nice if he sent up a flare, but I get pushing back from the virtual bar every now and then.
I still call it The Jake.
Mrs P and I are planning a weeklong bike tour in the Finger Lakes and realized that Tedeschi Trucks Band was playing in Canandaigua that week. Unfortunately the bikeable hotels are all $350+. Anyone have a line on cheap lodging in that area on August 16th?
I’m not real familiar with CNY but I will be spending a couple days in Cortland next week with nothing to do. Any suggestions?
CSNY was awesome.
