I would think that it wouldn’t because the fire is burning the chemicals and should in theory just leave carbon as the residue, as long as the torch is burning clean. It’s kind of like an Oxy acetylene torch, when burning the acetylene alone it doesn’t burn clean or completely but when oxygen is added the flame become perfectly mixed and leaves only carbon behind.

It's not the combustible part that I am concerned about. About 10% of the mix is a gelling agent, esterized phosphoric acid, I believe. I sucked at high school chemistry so I'm hoping someone here is more knowledgeable. The product has a long hazmat sheet but it doesn't say anything about what's left behind after the mix burns.

Anyone been out in the wasatch, taking my first trip out and will report back what I manage to find. Coworkers have been telling me they see things popping out of the ground on there hikes up big and millcreek so I’m getting excited at the thought

Same I struck out. I was only hoping to find morels but I’m still a rookie when it comes to there spots out here. Porcinis and chanterelles are easy but it’s a little early for those so I’m not surprised

UT morel videos starting to hit social media. There's fully mature yellows and blacks in the riparian zones. Blacks are up in low elevation, west facing aspen thickets.

River bottom morels seem to be on their way out in central WA. I've scrounged up a couple pounds but a buddy went to check a game cam and picked 5 gallons in a 10 year old burn!

Didn't find any morels but did find a ton of common field caps and a few other randos.

Last score on a river float was a flush of chicken. Took the small one and left the large clothes basket sized one alone.

I think that's the pryophilous pholiota species. I've seen 2nd year burns absolutely carpeted with those and nary a morel to be found.

Mediocre morel season in the tetons. I keep reading about heat domes and record temps but none of that's been happening around here.
We're expecting more snow.

Too cold for a good season. A half pound here, a half pound there. Nothing photo worthy unless you like verpas. A ton of peckerheads in the thickets but not much else.

Anyone have any suggestions for where to hunt morels in the Missoula area? I know the Lolo fires were very productive, but that was years ago. Also, not even sure if this is the right time, but it seems like it. There was that fire by Dixon. Was way up high. Anyhoo, TIA.

You could try picking naturals if there's no recent burns. Your area probably has Brunnea, Snyderi and Tridentina in the mountains and Americana in the riparian zones that have cottonwoods.

We're getting hosed. Spots last year that yielded pounds hold literally zero. But man, if field caps were delicious, it would be a hell of a year.

Ironic given all the bad press morels got over the last year. If you really want to play it safe, stick to porcini, chanterelles and hedgehogs. Nobody goes to the emergency room with those when they are undercooked and no potentially lethal lookalikes.

BTW, Hunter, it took me 3 minutes searching "montana wildfire 2023" to find the Colt Fire. Burned over 7000 acres north of Seeley lake, July-Aug 2023. Be advised that Lolo NF requires you to get a free personal use permit if you want to fill a bucket, 1 gallon or less no permit required.

The term "naturals" refers to the morel species that fruit without fire. Naturals fruit every spring or early summer when conditions are good. Burn morels only fruit when their host trees die. You can find naturals growing in a burn; you will not find burn morels growing in unburnt forest.

Note well: you can also find false morels growing in burns. The deadly "brain" gyromitra is common in partially burned stands of doug fir.
