Right? Cancun on 3 is hilarious. Maybe if they said "Bananaboat!" he would have been cool with it?

Was Rodman dirty or just ferocious going for rebounds? I honestly don’t remember. Also Charles Oakley came to mind as an enforcer but can’t recall if he was dirty or just a tough guy? Different era for sure back then.

I stand by Bruce “the ankle breaker” Bowen as being the dirtiest of all time. Some of the shit he did to Kobe back in the day would lead to major suspensions nowadays. I really liked those Duncan Spurs teams but fuck Bowen.

Lambert, Rodman, Malone, Charles Oakley, Artest (the list could be pretty long) could all be on that list….. your list looks more like this years all dirty nba players which would be a fun award to give out.

Rodman was dirty AF. The shit he used to do to Karl Malone to get Malone riled up was hilarious. May have been ok for the era, but not today.

To be fair, at least Rodman wasn’t knocking up 13 year old girls. Zing! How massive would that scandal be today? (Also as a father of a 15 and 10 year old girl, I have a new perspective for just how fucking gross that is).

Lakers fire Coach Ham after making the WC finals last year. Is there another sport where the head coach is as disposable as the NBA? Really, are NBA players even coachable and does the coach even really matter? Sure there's the Pops and Kerrs and Jacksons of the world, but there's also the Doc Rivers, David Blatts and Kurt Rambises too.

Nevermind last year, Ham coached the in-season tournament champs!!! (lol… please tell me they aren’t going to keep that going?)

They are definitely keeping the in-season tournament going. By most accounts other than yours, it was very successful.

I doubted him at first, however, Joe seems to be doing something right in Boston. Or are the players coaching themselves?

By most accounts other than mine? The joke I made isn’t exactly an original quip. Care to cite some kind of source? I don’t think anyone really gives a shit about the in season tournament. The play-in tournament has been a huge success, on the other hand.

It was so successful that the coach of the team that won it was just fired. Lol…

Let’s take a poll - does anyone in this thread give the slightest fuck about the in-season tourney? Anyone?

It was never supposed to have anything to do with whether a team did well in the playoffs, and was never supposed to be a replacement or proxy for playoff success. What it was supposed to do was increase interest in the NBA during the first half of the season, create some playoff-like drama and playoff-like performances, and generate more revenue. It was a success on that front.

The NBA’s In-Season Tournament Is an Unqualified Success
NBA In-Season Tournament has been worth the effort, even as some insiders remain skeptical

And there's also articles/pieces that talk about how annoying the hype was or how the IST is not designed for hardcore fans like you and that hardcore fans look down their noses at it:
Everyone Has Been Convinced That The NBA In-Season Tournament Is Real
    You don't get the Cup
David Aldridge was very skeptical but admitted that it played out pretty well:
The NBA put eleventy billion dollars into incessantly hyping the In-Season Tournament (IST) as not just Must See TV, but You Hate Goldfish and Your Mom if You Don’t Agree This is Nirvana in November TV. It has hyped this thing within a half-inch of its life. But the IST, so far, has worked out as well as anyone on Fifth Avenue could have hoped — garnering near-universal buy-in from hardcore fans, usually skeptical media and the vast majority of players.
I never said I gave a shit about the IST, or that I expect everyone posting in here to care. But it did exactly what it was supposed to, which in the first year of its existence is actually fairly impressive IMO. The players DID seem to care about it, even if the $500k doesn't tip the needle for a guy like Lebron. That money makes a big difference to a guy at the end of the bench, and I guarantee that impacts everyone in the locker room. The games were talked about more. There was more attention.

Take a minute to step outside of what you personally care about, and I think you'll see that it was a net positive for the league. I think I cited a few sources.

Season isn’t even done yet. The whole point is the Lakers not even being a top 6 seed and then getting quickly dumped from the playoffs definitely lowers any cache the IST had. It’s now the butt of a joke… and even before the playoffs many were clowning on LA hanging that banner.

But it’s all good - hugely successful and if Denver repeats we’ll need to give that title an asterisk since they didn’t get it done during the IST. ;-)

By that logic, doesn't the asterisk apply to any team that wins the championship this year that isn't the Lakers?

It was never ever supposed to be some preview of the playoffs. It was supposed to be standalone thing. I think the NBA hopes that, in time, being the IST champ will have some longer-term meaning that teams miight point to as something, but nothing that happened then is cheapened by what happens months later in the playoffs (or vice versa). That was never the point and that was clear from the get go. Even back then, not a soul believed that because of the results of the IST, we were supposed to now consider the Pacers or Lakers to be serious title contenders. In fact, Hollinger (linked above) even talked about that:

But as far as the two teams we ended up with … that was perhaps not what we expected, right? This is pretty consistent with the results of in-season Cup competitions in soccer, that the randomly drawn groups, very short season-within-a-season of group play and single-elimination knockout rounds lead to finalists that might not necessarily be the two best teams … or all that close to the two best teams.
If that's what you expected, if that's what you thought the NBA was trying for, then of course you're going to think of it as a joke. But that was never the point.

Obviously I was kidding, hence the wink.

I just think the in season thing was dumb so having a little fun clowning on it and the Lakers. It works for soccer but the NBA is different. I bet the IST isn’t around 5 years from now.

That is the laziest shit in the world. Post something, get called on it. Respond saying "you're wrong, cite sources". Have sources cited, double down on being wrong and get called out again, then respond "lol, why so serious". Come on, man, be better.

Get called on it? Yeah the in season tournament is fucking dumb no matter how many mid season links you want to post. I was clowning on it just like many real NBA fans and analysts. It wasn’t for us you say? Okay, I don’t give a fuck. Calm down.

For the record you basically said it was a huge success and I was one of the only ones who feels that way about it. Clearly I was in the severe minority. I disagree.

No, for the record I *exactly* said "By most accounts other than yours, it was very successful."

You asked me to cite sources for that. I did. It took me all of 3 minutes to find them, googling "nba in season tournament success or failure". You haven't posted anything to refute any of them (and now say you don't care about any other sources, lol), but instead just keep arguing that it is stupid and unsuccessful because you don't like it. Okay. Got it. I certainly cannot dispute that you don't like it.

2023/2024 NBA THREAD: WHO WANTS TO GO ON PARADE?!?

Most accounts means actual NBA fans aka a strong majority. Googling something specific and getting those results doesn’t mean shit - I can Google the opposite and get a ton of results too.

Hey if everyone here thinks the in season tourney was the shit and you’re super excited about it next year by all means let me hear about it and I’ll stand corrected.

TNT crew clowned on the Lakers for hanging that banner.

Go to NBA Reddit and click on the stories about Ham being fired and the top comments are mostly jokes about the IST.

Quoting this for you. This was all that I said about it. Seems like a pretty harmless comment. I know ratings went up (they had nowhere else to go for that time of year), that doesn’t mean I can’t laugh at it being dumb.

For what it’s worth I liked watching it. It gave me hope that the Pistons could at least compete in some kind of playoff. Of course my hopes were dashed, but oh well.

    Dumbest fucking game ever.

How does Donovan put up 50 fucking points and they don’t get the W?

    They’re really missing Jarrett Allen.
