Yes appreciate the honest breakdown. Thats a nice weight. I wasnt interested in the sl's but these new mid power bikes seem to strike a nice balance. The fazua and the sx in particular. They'd be fairly close to the power that my 70nm e8000 is and a 13lbs lighter bike.

He’s saying that the top end output in NM of the mid-power feels like ‘level 2’ of a full power bike. So, like, a small 6 cylinder vs. a monster 8.
All of these motors have a different feel. The Rocky, for example, is 108nm, but you have to work for it with a fairly high cadence and watts from yourself.
Other motors give more boost with less rider input. The variables are quite large, and some are more tunable than others.

Yeah. Generally speaking the first gen SL ebikes were only like 30 n-m torque, full power ebikes were 85-108 (most around 90), and the new crop of mid powers are 55-60. And the 2 I've had (Levo, Heckler SL) have 3 power settings that are usually set to about 30%/60%/100% of torque (that you can tweak of course). So in terms of max motor torque, the midpower is about 2/3 of that available for a full power.

But the motors all have different response (how much rider power is needed to cause how much motor power), which you further tweak with the apps. It did feel like Turbo on the Levo/Brose took very little actual rider power to generate 100% motor power - basically as long as you spun at 80-90 rpms, it didn't seem to care much about how much actual force you exerted, it would give you the full 90 n-m. You could fiddle with the profile but the motor response felt pretty binary/on-off. In contrast, the Fazua seems to have a proportionate response up to a certain threshold, at which point it gives full power. And that proportionate response (to me) feels more aligned to my perceived exertion.

Love the Fazua and my Relay. Its response and performance are HIGHLY yet easily customizable via the very simple phone app, even if the on-bike display/controls are limited.

To be fair i think theyre all pretty good. Thats some great vert in boost. An extender and a bit of mid power mode and 10k ft day is quite possible in around 5ish hrs

Talk to me about commuter eebs. My distance to the office is about to jump from 6 miles to 15 miles so daily bike commuting will become impractical without a motor. I tested it out yesterday and in ideal conditions (high 50s, light tailwind, no traffic) it took 1:05. With an ebike I figure I can cut that down to 40-45 minutes which brings daily use back into the sphere of possibility and pretty close to driving or taking the train.

A super fancy rig like the SC Skitch is definitely not in the budget. What brands/models offer the best compromise between quality/performance and cost? Ideally I'm looking for a flat bar commuter style. No fat tires, folding, etc. type nonsense.

The Velotric T1 ST looks intriguing.

Is converting my current bike (Canyon Roadlite) with a hub drive wheel a terrible idea?

Get a Bafang 1000w BBSHD and put it on a rigid mtb with slicks. You'd like 40+mph with a throttle when you want to.

Yamaha has a decent looking commuter for about $3k.

Whatever you do, get a class 3. Pedal assist to 28mph is a beautiful thing

Um, cool story bro. I put a BBSHD on a heavy ass fat bike and can do 30+MPH. So that's like 1000KPH (because freedom units are just so much betterer).

well you might be hacking the motor in which case it might void the warranty,

but I'm talking about an e-bike bought from a real bike store made by a real bike company
