    bowling

On the bowling front, last week I went with a group of friends for the first time in 30 + years. I used to bowl in leagues but most of the guys had not bowled much. I noticed crazy pin action several times which was crazier because they were hurling 12 pound balls.
After a while a couple of them are talking about strings on the pins and I tell them to have another beer cuz there ain't no way there are strings on the pins and they are seeing the lasers that mark where the pins are. Then I notice it also. WTF!! I start paying attention and sure as hell there are strings coming from the top to the top of the pins. I ask the guy at the counter and he gives me the same look I gave my buddies when they said it. Then i asked the girl and she says yeah, they always have them. but always to her was the 2 years she worked there.

A guy I work with bowls in leagues and I asked him about it and he said it is something fairly new that was implemented as a cost savings because it was cheaper than having people reset and the old automated process was also labor intensive. He said some of the leagues have moved out of houses that have the strings because of the ridiculous pin action. Strings would get tied up on other pins and fly across the lane and wipe out splits. It was really insane. We were laughing our asses off at how crazy it was.

Anybody else bowl lately and notice this? I called a friend who I bowled with in leagues that was a really good bowler and he couldn't believe it so I will make my way back sometime and take a video of it.

There was a bar back home that had a lane with those string pins but never seen them in a proper bowling alley before (not that I’ve been to a huge number of bowling alleys).

I bowled at a place in Vancouver that had the string pins, but it wasn't normal bowling. It had candlepin balls and only 5 pins, which were assigned different point values. According to wiki, it's a Canadian thing. I thought it was a fun variant. The strings seemed to work fine, which might be partly due to there only being 5 pins.

You mean 5 pin bowling doesn't exist everywhere??? Lol. Coming from Canada it seemed like every place had them. Good for kids who can't handle a full size ball. But I liked the full size better. Don't recall strings or not but it's been 20 yrs since I've bowled.

I had never seen 10 pin bowling in person until I moved to the States.

Reminds me that I’m amused that people wash their clean cars. I wash my car around 2-3 times/year. Usually in the spring when I’m near civilization and my car is covered in lignin. Maybe I should look closer at the cars around me in line.

I keep waiting for a gap in the storms long enough to justify the effort. It's been a while. I'm amazed by the number of clean cars around Truckee.

The local car wash now offers monthly memberships. It's like $40 for unlimited washes. Judging by the ~30 minute lineup at that place most days, a lot of people use it. I think I actually wash my car even less now that they've started doing that. No fucking way I'm sitting in line for 30 minutes to wash my car.

Besides, the car wash scrubbers aren't all that clean after 50 cars go through it. Just gonna scratch and swirl the shit out of your paint. Wash it at home in the driveway with the kids.

When my wife was a kid she and her brothers and sisters had to wash her stepfather's cars (yes, plural) every weekend. It is not a fond memory. I guess it depends on the spirit in which it's done and on the participation of the adult.

Heard on the radio--commentator describing the Pope's latest blurb as "outdated theology". No--- the whole idea of theology is outdated. Like astrology and alchemy.

I think it's kind of amusing at the Sixers just unveiled a new statue of AI and it's at their practice facility.

My wife didn't get it though, so maybe it's not amusing.

Weed amnesty box at O'Hare for the convenience of people who forgot to clean out their pockets before going to the airport. Just imagine the fights the airport staff are having over this thing. "Screw you buddy, you cleaned it out last week. It's my turn!"
