The stock bolt only catches a few threads, the fork has depth for 7-8 more threads, so you can just need to source a longer bolt, and turn past the bad threads.
Fox should have a M3 x 8, buy a M3 x 10.
Home Depot should have one if you don’t have a good bolt supply shop.

One of the fender mounting holes on a 23 Zeb has the same problem, never gets tight. Will a longer fastener do the trick there too?
Talk me into or out of buying a Spur while the NX and GX builds are still on sale. Would be complementing a GG Smash.
My wallet wants the NX but the GX build seems like a no brainer for the price difference.
Also open to other similar deals for similar bikes.
NX and Spur seem like really contradictory things. NX is heavy as a WW2 tank and performs like shit. Spur is meant to be a light, snappy trail bike. The other issue with NX is that it uses a HG freehub, so when you do upgrade from it, you're stuck trying to find a new $100+ freehub driver to go to either MS or XD.
Good to know, I forgot about the freehub thing.
I'm a cheapass at heart and was trying to justify going NX by thinking that this will be a second bike that won't see as many miles, but the reality is this bike will probably see more miles than the Smash when it comes down to it.
I've been looking around for a new 'down country' bike too, I like my XC bike, but the steep headtube gets annoying because when I can't let my guard down...
I've been looking at the Cervelo ZFS-5 120, which is a Blur TR twin-sibling , they have some killer deals on them, but I prioritize climbing above everything else.
Other stuff.
Epic Evo from that shall not be named company, good deals on these depending on your size
Trek Top Fuel
Evil something or another
SC Tallboy - Looks good on paper
Canyon Trail Lux - Would want to ride one before I mail order something...
Pivot 429 - spendy
Yeti SB115-120 - Dentist bike
Ibis Ripley - AF for a budget option @ Jenson
Niner RDO X RIP Ass name your bikes better - Jenson has some killer deals on these..
The Spur seems to get good reviews, it's on my short list right now
When life gives you haters, make haterade.
Fox just sent me a new 2024 X2 as a replacement for my questionable covid-era X2
How do I make sure it has the right tune for my Ripmo V2?
I have no idea what I am looking at, but it says all of this:
Part number: 979-01-140
Description: 2024, FLOAT X2, F-S, K, 2pos-Adj, FOX, SRV, 210, 55, CX001, RM, Rezi BX001, Orange, Neutral Logo, AM
Far from an expert on shocks, but you set the tune. Biggest thing to worry about is sizing and mounting hardware. I believe that should be all set if it's a replacement.
Just set the air to 25-30% sag and then mess with all the low and high speed rebounds. Take it down a section of trail that is somewhat typical of what you ride or maybe on the faster end of the spectrum multiple times tweaking the settings until it feels good.
pretty much that ^^ find out what your sag is sposed to be and try that, measure how much you depress the shock when you sit on the bike, there should also be a number of clicks to start with on the dampner settings
you can't really check airpressure cuz the chamber is so small that every time you check you lose a bunch of pressure SO make sure your sag doesnt sag over time cuz it could mean you have a leaky seal
Lee Lau - xxx-er is the laziest Asian canuck I know
Same list, I just sold an AF because I wanted to try something new and as a larger rider, felt the frame flex of the aluminum. The bike ripped singletrack.
Ive compared a Ripmo AF to a carbon one and it was night and day different so I would love it if they updated the carbon Ripley to the same HT angle and I would probably be in for that.
Spur, new Epic Evo, and a SB120 are top of the list for me. I am worried a Tallboy wont have the pedaling zip Im looking for in my smaller bike since I have a SB160.
Ibis ships bikes with shocks that have customized shim/valve stacks--so I know it is more than just messing with the dials and pressure.
Found an MTBR thread and it looks like Fox changed their 2024 tunes but the X2 they sent me is the right match for the Ripmo tune that was in there. Key words in the profile are the CX001 and BX001 which mean lighter midvalve and base valve compression than ship in the stock X2.
Although I am closer to 200lb so maybe a standard shock would have been fine.
I don't know if they put any volume spacers in it--I think Ibis ships it with 1 spacer and I never changed it. Guess we'll have to see how it feels when I get the bike out.
I assumed as much, but I saw in some other thread on the X2 warranty that someone got a shock back that did NOT have the manufacturer tune. Looks like I got the right item though.
Ah, I didn't know they did that. Interesting. So people who build up a frame just get what they get unless they spec a certain build with shims and such.
I think the 429 from pivot is an underrated bike in the burlier side of the “down county” category. Lighter than the Ranger (frame at least) pedals much better than the Tallboy and Spur. Much more stable and durable (but slower) than bikes like the epic Evo. Likely going to be lighter and pedal better than the SB120 (but not as smooth).
The “brunch ride” build gets you factory suspension and a decent Shimano drivetrain for $5000.
If you want it to “feel fast” pickup some used carbon wheels off pikebike. Superboost options are easy to come by but cheaper. I bought some We Are Ones for my pivot with new maxxis tires, rotors and hydra hubs for $800. Keep the aluminum wheels if you’re worried about breaking the we are ones (you shouldn’t be) or sell them for a couple hundred bucks.
I’ve been thinking about trying to build up a 25-26lbs 429. I own a Mach 4 and Switchblade… so it doesn’t fit right now but that would let me switch to a 429 + big bike combo.
