skiing was great at crystal today

as huskier (new name eh?) said, the bottom is real and maybe I should change my name to rockfinder 3000 or something

was traversing to underneath C6 for (another) great run when I found a rock, spun around and released from my ski. spent the subsequent 20-30 minutes looking for it (the lesson I always have to relearn: look where you landed, not where you think you released… I hiked up, thrashed around for awhile [thankfully easy to clear the foot-ish of loose stuff of the SOLID base, so knew I hadn't missed it], eventually made it back to my starting point and found it a few mins later

then they opened Southback which was pretty dang great, King x2 with two laps into silver basin, then I decided to see what was hiding in some of the a-basin drop ins off the traverse to the king and, oh boy, the secret of the afternoon was lower a-basin

at 230 I was still finding giant pitches of untouched snow because the a-basin side of the King looked dice so I guess everyone mobbed into silver basin or something

I did find some cool rocks and managed to a core shot on some new-ish basis but, *BONUS* I separated the ski edge and sidewall underneath the binding which led to a fun bit of time spent with epoxy, a syringe, and some vices after getting home

Love hitting the saddle of a-basin - some fun lines in there . Somewhat suprised they opened sback - that’s a good sign , waiting for more depth later in the week

Stevens reporting 31" in the last 48 hours with lots more on the way. This is certainly a nice shot in the arm for the Cascades snowpack.

Looks like they are reporting another 10” last night. I wanted to go back up today but our legs are shot from yesterday. The quality was quite good. Everything in the trees and wind protected zone was near Wasatch quality. Backside was wind-loaded in a few spots but not wind-scoured. Some crazy deep spots out there.

Back for seconds. Untracked Bear pits at 11:30 on the way out was a treat. And to the ops person that kept 6 yellow on the light board 30 mins+ after it cracked, you are my hero. Ski-on most of the morning.

Baker was good on Monday, and people were hungry hungry hippos for the new snow. The crowds lightened up quick though.





The wife thoroughly enjoyed herself and exploring the new terrain.





Timing couldn’t have been better for Baker, that place was hurting bad for snow in the lower reaches.

Legitimately one of the deepest days of the season up at the Stevens backcountry yesterday, constant face shots. My tracks from monday had been almost totally covered in areas by Tuesday, and I think its only going to get better. As of right now, still snowing at 2k, but let's see if that persists.

Any off mountain ticket retailers for Crystal that could be less than window? More than likely not but you never know. Sorry, but going to be part of the problem. Wife and I are storm chasing next week for four days. The mid-week wildcard gives us three days but we need tix for a fourth. We got hooked on Crystal 12 years ago when they were owned by Boyne and our season passes from Sugarloaf worked at par. Love that hill!

People don't understand that this is the line before the chairs start loading in the morning while patrol does control work which isn't typically finished nowadays until 10am . So what you are really seeing in this picture is everyone who is skiing that day, even the get out of bed laters. It's literally all of the skiers in a giant que waiting to go up. That being said 85 percent go to chair 2 but as more terrain opens the lines get smaller

For those wishing they could have made it up hwy 2 today, be at peace. Forecast warming was for sure happening; untracked snow was fun if you had ultra huge skis, but few lifts were open and the snow was very heavy and warm. We made it up but called it good at 1130 to avoid injury from the snow or the severely concentrated crowd. C132’s did me right as always and I had some good turns, but felt fine taking off. It’s good for the base! Here’s a picture of my pal sorta trapped after getting taken out by a wind whale…

The boy and I made it up, too. Made for some character building skiing for him. We had Billy Goats and they made things manageable. Lots of people on the struggle bus today.

We left at 12:30 and it was nuking some fat wet flakes.
