    Cascadia/WA Pow Farming ‘23/‘24

Stevens has decided they need to expand the footprint of their “Carpool only” lots (meaning cars with 4+ occupants) on weekends from two to three dedicated lots. And they do this the week before the Pineapple Express comes through to wreak havoc on the snowpack. Lame.

What’s amazing are the people applauding them because they believe it’s going to make a difference. It just means the non-carpool lots fill up quicker and people get pissed off because they don’t have 4-people in their car but are forced to park in Yodelin. It’s like they were jealous of all of the negative attention Crystal gets and wanted their share. SMH

Alpental was amazingly uncrowded with a good 6" of new by 2pm, the upper mtn never opened

Just a wee bit of body to that snow tonight but the spackle faucet turned on tonight and made for pleasant turns if your expectations were low enough

I essentially haven’t skied at all this year. I’ve been working like a dog the last two months; finishing up a job - I should finally get my head above water today/tomorrow - look at the forecast - fuck, sorry.

Silver lining is that the rain should keep people away and lines to a minimum so you can bang out lots of training laps in rain corn conditions to get your legs in shape for better conditions should they happen later this year.

It's the lessons families, they want to show up at 9am or later. Stevens listens to them because lessons is a profit center. But agree, it won't make much difference. Also, I'm shocked the RV lot has survived through all this.

….I mean…. There is a legitimate problem with people driving solo in 6000# SUVs… (guilty)

How else do you incentivize people to carpool?

Nope, this is the best season we've ever had.

Rain to the top is very common out here, and low snowpack will become more and more common. I would suggest investing in clothing from https://grundens.com/collections/commercial-fishing.

The alternative is to move back to colder/higher climates. What did you really expect moving to a place on the ocean with the lifts 2000 feet lower than metro denver?

Well, it can get a lot worse.

Personally, I'm a holdout for post lessons late March.

I only know Stevens from what I see on kooksofstevenspass socials, haven't skied there in years, do the carpool lots park out? Must be if they are adding one? I've avoided Stevens in recent years due to the Epic mgmt failures, park-outs, and emergence of Leavenworth day trippers that have all coupled to turned that freeway into gridlock. Does seem like the ship is sailing a little better this year?
An issue I see with the carpool lots is the checking of cars on the road prior to entering the lots, and the slowdown that causes. Seems like folks having to roll down windows, talk to a flagger, argue about what lot they can and can't go to, seems to drag out a red snake and push traffic downhill, at least at Crystal. Clearly there's no easy way to park a few thousand cars in a 8-10am window with poor road conditions, but I do wish there was a better way for cars to file into lots, and I'm afraid musical chairs in all these parking lots with different rules and a checkpoint for each, only hampers that.

???? How is reserving A-lot for 4 person carpools on a pow day mid week helping the lessons families? Last Thursday I skated through A lot at 930, there were maybe 10 vehicles.....

You could've been number 11, but you didn't have 4 people in your car.

Got up to crusty land for some midweek turns, and was pleasantly surprised at the conditions. Upper mountain had a solid refresh cycle, with boot-top turns hiding in the untracked areas.

Down low? Lighter snow turned quickly into mashed potatoes- not sticky but it’ll grab your skis and body slam you if you gave it the chance. Eventually it turned to corn as you got to the base. A full days workout to say the least.

Maybe when people complain all the time people don’t want to carpool with them.

TBH I’m a little surprised how empty the carpool lots and lanes are around here. It’s making us plan out ski days with friends more, since it’s easier to get on the hill when you are out there together.

A far cry from when I could schlep up to snowbowl on the weekday afternoon. But I’m liking skiing more with friends than skiing alone.

The more cars there are with single occupants, the shorter the lift lines. I for one encourage solo riders.

The silly thing is that carpool = 4 or more. I almost always have at least one or two other people, but rarely have four. Most of the time, I’m skiing with my teenage/young adult kids.

I mean, it’s not like they are eliminating my truck. It just ends up in a different lot. But whatever.

Stikki has the right perspective. Parking is still free and it seems that they are catering to the lessons crowd.

I almost went to Crystal yesterday to beat the incoming Pineapple Express, but a lift ticket was something like $150. Fuck that. I guess you almost can't ski without a pass anymore.
