The flat lighting made for an interesting drop in to the trench carved by the big avalanche that ran through Clark a few weeks back.

Did the avalanche run at the bottom of Sunrise Bowl. Me & the boy got first tracks in Sunrise. I was building up some speed to get through the dip above the roped off area when all of a sudden I was airborne. I was on my heels keeping my skinny skis up when I was kicked up, tips fly in the air, all my son saw was me disappear. I thought, huh, I'm flying, I hope it's soft, wow still flying I really hope it's soft. Land on my back in a soft poof. I saved the other 5 or 6 behind us from the same fate. The first three laps were bliss - snow was nice&light in the east.

It got crunchier as we moved west.

Most liftlines were virtually ski-on all AM, prolly because everyone was in line at Summit. I’m told a line started around 1000. This was taken ~1115, an hour before they put butts on chairs.

Hope it was worth the wait - Summit ran 100 min before shutting down for poor viz.

Three more Ikonic! days to go…
I hopped on the chair after rolling into the parking lot at about 12:50pm. Saw what looked like non-patrol types skiing down the NE face and decided to check it out. Was about a 10 minute wait. Viz sucked. Snow was meh. A bit of light wind/temp effected. Was not worth it other than after about 4 months of skiing I can say I finally rode the Summit chair. So, I've got that going for me.

Seems like this holiday weekend is going to be crowded just based on the number of cars that were in the lots this afternoon.

That was the one! I hit it at the end of hammer bowl. Felt like I was riding up a little wind lip before I boosted straight vertical to a thankfully soft flat. Luckily noone saw me furiously rolling down the windows.

God bless both of you for speaking truth. After the 4th lift ride hearing nonstop about how epic and perfect it was I finally snapped. It took almost three hours to get from Redmond to the lot today, leaving at 715. Ikonic.

I left Sisters at 0640, arrived 0820. It’s usually takes less than a hour. Stuck behind plows and gomers virtually the whole way up. Wasn’t much quicker getting down the hill either.

Given the viz, I was surprised they put butts on Summit chair at all today. My theory is management didn’t want all the people who’d been waiting in line for 2 hours to riot.

A bit of a cluster on Century Drve. No doubt out of town tourons with their trusty A/S and half worn AT tires.

Man what a stupid day for Ed Chair to break and no hope of fixing it. They didn’t have anyone looking at it or working on it all day. Green was shut down due to wind but eventually got going this morning. I’ve been hanging with my 2 year old all day and nursing a mild back injury most of the day so I can’t speak to the quality of the goods, but it’s been snowing steadily all day, pretty awesome storm.

Well I’ll swallow my boot liners now. Ed Chair opened for the night ski session just after 4, after a ton of people already left thinking it wouldn’t go! The problem was at the top station so they were working on it all day, nothing going on at bottom, and just couldn’t see them because vis was shit for most of the day.

The Govy 500 was in full force Friday. Stop and go from before Rhody to after the chain up area...+45 minutes

Plan this morning was to assault the Cinder Cone from the parking lot. Then call it a morning. However, the good young blue coat clad lifties were setting up the corral for Red. No matter, I stuck to the plan and got a lap on the Cone. Unfortunately, must have had a bit of skin glue stick to the tip area of my right ski. Made for an amateurish decent.

Decided to load up on Red as it had just started loading. Shout out to Nick who was loading 3 singles per row call. Ended up getting a lap down to Outback and then decided to head home, but then saw this line and said, screw it; "one more time."

Overall, a very nice morning, filled with a few pleasant surprises.

Left at 10am for some family event later today and the shit show that is Century Drive continues. The line up the hill had to have been over 5 miles long. Goobers driving 15-20mph on the way down. I guess better safe than sorry for those that are not used to driving in winter conditions.

That looks like it didn’t suck.

Backed up 5 miles on the downhill at 1000? People giving up?
Maybe they were following the admonition in this week’s Source Weekly

Or maybe it was the tourons running all season tires…

There was a dickhead in a 4Runner that passed a few people on the way up, and then decided to chill out. But there were indeed people turning around in the middle of the road and giving up.

Indeed, it was the best day of the 3; Friday/Saturday/Sunday. Sun came out just as I hit Canyon and Upper Coffee. Had hardly been touched at 9:45am. Second lap was just as good as the first.

Cream cheese in White R yesterday -- saw zero skiers/riders (just snowshoers & family sledders), prolly cuz it's a long slog before any reward. But going alone, I figured I should be somewhat in view of others, just in case. No real movement in the snow except where the shallower drifting over freeze layer occured. Isolated cracking on steeper slopes/convexities, no recent avy debris seen.

Got my affirmation that I am indeed out of shape & no longer young. Only 1k vert, but 2.5hrs away from the truck. But I enjoyed getting out, practicing my kickturns, and reminding myself that I need more bc experience. And didn't hurt anything.

I'll battle the crowds tomorrow. Not looking like much fresh tonight. With the warm day today, I'm expecting Heather/PR will be firm, so groomers mostly for tomorrow.

Driving past Govy def had some accumulated ice in the morning...so glad i'm running studs

At 27.5mph, it takes 44 minutes! Adds up fast if you’re driving up most days of the week.

Let’s start a PSA to “pull over, let the conga line of 15 vehicles pass who are still going a reasonable 45mph but held up by your fear and/or lack of proper equipment”

Oregon ‘23-‘24 El Niño Schralpadelic Rumble Thread

Parking crew was apparently told to cram everyone in this morning…girl tried to create a 15’ drive aisle. Luckily the other folks in the row revolted and readjusted before the following row got established

Snowing in Bend. Heavy wet flakes. Working for the man, so not going to be up there today. Looks like classic PNW storm skiing conditions.
