You know a lot of tire retailers don't charge a fee to rotate your tires, especially if you buy the tires from said tire retailer. AFAIK both Discount Tires and Les Schwab provide this service when you buy and have a set of 4 tires installed. But glad some people think their balls are big enough to do it themselves. God forbid you use your brains every once and awhile. Thinking with the small head is what gets us guys into trouble.

ya, it’s definitely worth driving to some place and sitting and waiting for some incompetent moron to swap a set of tires and wheels. Fifteen minutes in my driveway is better then wasting an hour and a half of my life due to pure laziness. It’s not thinking with the small head, it’s being an adult and finding value in your time. I guess changing brakes and oil probably fall out of your realm as well. Go put some lotion on your hands and enjoy your white wine before your wife pegs you.

It takes me longer than 15 minutes. 45-60 minutes (“door to door”). that includes getting my shit out, putting my shit away, using torque wrench on the nuts, walking between the flat-ish part of my gravel driveway and my garage multiple times, and rolling the tires to/from around the back of my garage.

JFC. Get back to us after you jerk off to whatever image you have of yourself and your manliness. Do you lube your truck nuts when you rotate tires? You red-blooded American hero, you.

Using a bar under the tire during dismount or mounting allows a pre-teen to change a tire with little to no effort. I've done it on massive vehicles like 5 tons and such. If you can roll a wheel, anyone can do it.

no, I let your wife lube my nuts. I guess next time I’ll just call caterpillar when a track kicks off a 330 because I’m too soft to be a man

No working class hero here, but been swapping my own tires (snows) using a floor jack and impact wrench for as long as I can remember. Supervising my teenage boys as they swap snows on Mom’s Suburban is almost delightful.

Part of the point of the second set of wheels and tires is to be able to just DIY at home. It's faster and easier than going to a tire shop, and you can visually inspect under the vehicle for anything else that needs attention.

I can and have changed my summer and winter wheels but if I take them to DT they will balance them for free when I do the twice yearly swap. I know it’s not as manly as limp dick Joey but it seems smart. Joey probably spins his wheels on his finger and shaves the tire with his fingernail to get balanced. Only takes 30 seconds.

Why do you need to rebalance your tires when you swap?

You don’t always, if it’s time for rotation they will check and rebalance. Something like every 8-10k miles

Sometimes wheel weights dismount themselves from the rim.

Agree with the separate sets of wheels for summers and snows. I will gladly let that chick in the video above pop my head like a melon.

It seems like a no-brainer for most of us. I stopped working on my vehicles years ago. I would rather spend that time riding my bike or taking the dog for a hike, etc. Heck, last vehicle I bought the car dealer threw in free oil changes for as long as I owned the vehicle. 10 years worth of free oil changes until I moved. Figured it was about $1,600 in value at 4 x oil changes a year at ~$40. But props to those that enjoy doing that type of vehicle maintenance.

Yeah, as a bike commuter I commonly see orphaned wheel weights.

But I’ve always felt while driving when a wheel is out of balance.

It’s hard to tell when they out of balance if you’re using 35/12.5 20 mud tires

One of my tires took so much weight that the installer thru a second layer of weights on top of the first. Great until I drove off and they were rubbing the caliper...

I went to bags in my tires because of blowing wheel weights off. So much easier. More expensive but worth it.

Got some Blizzaks installed today. First time ever having a second set of wheels with snow tires, I feel like such a grownup.

    Thanks everyone for the help!

Now to go rally this thing over Gore Pass tomorrow!

    Woot!

I had a pair of blizzaks on a sedan that didn’t require any weights on any of the wheels. My tire guy was impressed. I also drove the same car on a long length of the east side of the Sierra with air temps approaching 90* and there was a noticeable reduction in tread.

And Tire rack controlled testing saw a weakness in lateral stability in snow. The outpost nAT seemed like the overall winner but until that NA factory opens, they’re back ordered for months.
I recently installed a set of the Nokian Outposts on my Cherokee (trailhawk version).

Previous tires were the Wildpeak AT3Ws, which were fine, but not-so-good in more than a couple inches of fresh. The Falkens gave me about forty thousand miles, and had about thirty percent tread life remaining, but traction was poor in snow or icy conditions by that time.

Before the Wildpeaks, I had the Firestone Destination A/T2 (or the Destination Firestone A/T2...I forget), and the performance of those was similar to the Wildpeaks.

So far, I have about one thousand five hundred miles on the Outposts, and am very pleased. Very good fresh snow, old snow, and icy road performance. Noticeably stiffer sidewalls than the above-mentioned tires, providing great handling and tracking in dry conditions. Gas mileage is about the same or slightly lower. Only criticism is that these fuckers are loud- very audible hum. Doesn't really bother me, as it gives me something to listen to, other than the voices in my head.

Holy shit, installed these not a moment too soon, some seriously gnarly driving on Hwy 9 between Silverthorne and Kremmling and all the way over Gore Pass to Oak Creek. Never felt even a small slide.

Drove the Tundra w/ 33" Wildpeaks AT3s and a 1200lb camper and gear to Targhee and back from CO last week. Went over Teton Pass 4 times and up to Targhee in snow/ice conditions 5 times. Mostly dumping the whole time. Felt pretty comfortable in them the whole time. Got stuck once in the Targhee parking lot because they didn't mark where the end of the lot was and I just sunk into plowed snow and high centered. Slid out in an intersection in Driggs because it was 8" of fresh on glare ice. I also slipped and smacked my head in a brewery parking lot that night under the same conditions. Haha. So yeah, it was slick.

This truck gets low mileage in the winter, and will mostly be a summer traveler as a camper. So I need something that'll be sufficient for both but no real reason to buy snow tires from my POV.
