Looks like her line at the jump was a little left of where she wanted to be...
Staying hopeful for her!
Fuck! I just knew speed was going to be the only thing to stop her from being injury free
It looks to me like she just flew farther off the jump than she expected
Fingers crossed and vibes!
Ah shit. So difficult to jump from discipline to discipline, especially into DH occasionally.
+vibes+ for MS
I was about to write a post about how I'm surprised she still competes in the speed events given the risks and her excellence in Slalom/GS...why not focus on the disciplines where almost all of your wins are? (yes, I know that the overall standings matter, but I'm a world cup simpleton and wasn't thinking that deeply)
But that's just a horribly biased view based on how fricking good she is at tech. She may be better at the tech events, but she's still absolutely a world class speed skier. Last year her overall season standings were 7th in super G and 12th in downhill and she has a 2024 win in DH. There may have only been a single speed podium (Super-G) in 2023, but nobody with consistent top 10 finishes is going to hang up the skis.
This isn't like Vonn where she just couldn't hang with the top of the field in the slalom anymore (and just kept DNFing trying to push it)
I read that three (Brignone included...)fell at the same spot...considering they all prerun DH (to know exactly where they want to land, angle to launch, etc...) I wonder if something had changed at that particular corner...tried (and failed) to find brignone's crash...

Thank you everyone for your support and well wishes. At this point I’m just taking it day by day, and I’ll share more information or updates as I know more. Very thankful it’s not worse, but I’m pretty sore at the moment. I won’t be skiing the rest of this weekend, and I won’t be skiing in Kronplatz. Beyond that, it’s quite hard to say right now. Need a little time to process with my team and see how everything is feeling in the coming days! Thank you all![emoji120][emoji1690]![]()
I am not in your hurry
conversationally,
all-around success is greatly Admired on the White Circus - and MS has the ability to compete in any race she enters !
( consider the reverence that is still held for Bode, though he became a Speed event monster late in his career )
Hirscher Dominated the tech events. and Downhill is still King/Queen.
I believe FIS has made a (Big) Mistake rescheduling the events that were cancelled in the early season
( If you read the reports of what goes into Race Day, the race itself is probably the least of the racers' Stress
( see the articles published after Kilde's injury ) ) ;
also, I fault the course designers and the course setters -
'manufacturing 'jumps" on downhill and super-G course is going to have Bad consequences
( reportedly the Swiss Suter (?) tore her acl at the same combination ( jump / gate ) - I believe ) ;
set a decent course, not one that takes out 50% of the potential winners. !
I hope MS is alright ( I have seen no comment about mcl or meniscus ) - it is a joy to watch her race !
tuck it. skiJ
Vonn just said on CNN that her info is that it is an MCL strain.

Vonn is such an attention whore.

Major bummer. Props to her for status update.
I am with SkiJ that the FIS needs to do better.

I also read that more than 1 skier had issues at the same spot. Mikaela the days before and the practice runs had stated that she had some scary moments:
Sounds like nothing was broken, and some relatively minor knee damage (compared to ACL, MCL, being torn etc.) Continued vibes that her recovery be thorough and all goes well for her the rest of the season...So happy to be back in Cortina d'Ampezzo Ski World Cup because I love it here…although yesterday was a little bit of a shock to the system being back on DH skis, and I had a couple “scary” moments on the course (probably didn’t look as scary as it felt as I was running, because I’m a catastrophizer, hah who’s with meee?!). Looking forward to cleaning it up tomorrow for race 1 tomorrow!♀️ Bib 8.
Obviously, she just didn't want to ski without Petra, so she had to get herself injured too.

"everybody's got their hooks into you, fuck em....forge on motherfuckers, drag all those bitches across the goal line with you." - (not so) ill-advised strategy
Can you elaborate on ‘doesn’t mean shit’ for those of us about to join the acl club? I tweaked right knee three weeks ago stapling bumps at not too fast speed. It’s getting better and is almost at 90% bit the ‘doesn’t mean shit’ and ‘what happened’ and ‘will it happen again’ are in the back of my mind.
She should be able to fully recover given her age. Not so easy for those of us once you get past the 30's.

We call MRI the diagnosis machine
I rip the groomed on tele gear
Things Mikaela has going for her: She is young, very fit with an extensive strength training off season and does work outs that most non-world class athletes don't. Hopefully she got the immediate proper medical evaluation and as stated full MRI and evaluations of ROM when able, etc. Still do not like to see the type of crash she had, especially with that course set launching the skiers into the air and then coming down on the snow after they should even be setting up for that sharp turn. Just looked at the number of other skiers that either also went down, or at best skied out of the course for DNF. Since this same mountain is going to be the next Winter Olympic venue in 2 years, and after her last Olympic experience, just hope she can also recover mentally from this just as much as physically.
two years distant - If any elevated concern, skip the Olympic downhill. Period.
And skip the 'five medals' talk.
in 2026, racer the events MS Wants to race ;
Have Fun !!!
( another medal would be a Nice bookend for the greatest Alpine racing career. ever. )
That gate combination still p.s me off.
airborne at a blind gate / no room to avoid the fence. B.s.
( remember Are effectively ended Picabo's career in '98
( she skied until 2002, but I don't think she was ever again competitive.
Picabo led to Lindsey and Julia led to MS ))
heal - up RacerChick !
Six ties Annemarie ! You Got It ! !!!

My wife grew up a ski racer and for years has been wanting to watch Shiffrin race. Stars aligned with our work schedule and cheap European flights to get over to Andorra to ski and watch women’s tech racing. Of course Shiffrin is not racing now but nonetheless here we are.
