Tahoe '23/'24 - Reserve Now For Best Pricing!!!

Bad snow season, holiday weekend and a sketchy snowpack in an area that doesn’t get a lot of persistent weak layers make the news warning of avalanches warranted IMO. Yes if you moved from somewhere that has PWLs all winter or are a guide/avy forecaster you don’t have to listen to the news because either you or someone you know has already told them what to say. All others should use extreme caution.

As for wearing beacons inbounds, while I love the math analysis I think a good rule of thumb is to wear a beacon inbounds when you wouldn’t ski that avalanche terrain in the backcountry. Let’s be honest, the avalanche conditions have to be real bad for Northstar to have an inbounds slide. Kirkwood, Squaw, Alpine and even parts of Heavenly are a different matter.

Unless I remember to modify a photo before I post they always show up on TGR upside down, why I rarely post a photo anymore.

Question for the peanut gallery: where can I park and camp overnight in a van closest to Kirkwood or in Kirkwood? Also, I don’t have a snow park pass.

Skied OV today. Singles. Almost all KT. Pretty good skiing if you kept off beaten path until later when it essentially started to rain and then things got heavy and my gloves gave out.
Get home and in looking at jacket it is covered with small brown greasy spots. Especially the hood. Was this the KT lift ? Known issue ? Now need to get off without messing up the DWR.

Update, I’m alive! In a 2 mile section just above Cisco Grove it went from full on blizzard conditions to foot deep slush to black roads and pouring rain.

Technical Equipment Cleaners in Truckee does a really good job getting stains out while refreshing your DWR. I have also had good luck with the Nikwax tech wash...grease off the lift towers happens from time to time, especially with wet(ter) weather

Awesome storm finishing with the warmest temps and strongest winds of the whole thing.

+1 to this. Dave at TEC (off West River) is a miracle worker. My yellow touring pants were nasty and he had them looking brand new.

Possibly oil from the haul rope. Annually on a warm summer day the haul rope has oil dribbled on the length of it. This is to prevent rust and protect the hidden center of the rope which is synthetic. It is easy to lay on the oil a little too thick and on a rainy day it can be a mess. There is a reason lift mechanics dress in black.

Two or three years ago, I was riding chair 1 at Mammoth with some Euro guy in a *high end* Bogner one-piece suit. We were in a wet storm and the same thing - probably freshly greased bearings on the sheaves - the beautiful one-piece was destroyed by nasty grease streaks on the shoulder, chest and thigh. The guy was furious and the foreign accent made it that much more acute - management was about to get an ear full.

Heard two folks got caught in a Avy below Mott canyon today, have not heard details yet. 911 was called and there was a ski patrol response.

Yeah. They were blasting all day until at least 430. Never opened Lincoln to the public or any runout zones to silverbelt or palisades areas.

We should argue anyway. It's what people do on the internet.

I think there was pressure to get it open and skied so that it was ready for the weekend. I don't live in that world, I'm purely speculating. My opinion is worth its weight in internet.

Edited and removed comment. I'm here to learn from folks with tons of experience. Every once in a while I get included in conversations because of connections to SAR, EMS and resort ops. Friends and work. I apologize if I've acted as though I'm a SME. I'm not.

I've been around here a long time, but I was never all that involved in the skiing world. I've skied and snowboarded my whole life, but very recreationally. Grew up in KB. Bought my first house in TD. Lived in Truckee the last 7 years.

Again, I apologize. I'd love to ski with and meet some of guys at some point. Put faces with screen names.

Headed up there this AM. Curious to see what's it's like. I don't have high hopes. Yesterday AM was really fun at AM. Cream cheese consistency, but it got really chunky as it got skied out. I expect some chunky refreeze today.
