Haven't skied the east since '76 when I moved to Salt Lake.
Love to trade some driveway parking and skiing with mags for a spot in my driveway and / or house a mile up the LCC and some local mags to ski with.

Won't comment on the Mt. Washington lemmings.

Mi casa is walking distance to the lifts at Magic. If we ever get any decent snow, you're more than welcome to park in our driveway. We usually have vacant bedrooms and a bathroom so feel free to abandon the van life for a coupla days if need be.

Great way to (more) fully appreciate LCC.

That said, at least in recent memory, I don’t recall having 5 skis days this good under the belt before 12/15. A reset on the horizon but at least it was nice to get some good December skiing in before shit shifts. Last few years nothing came truly alive until mid-Jan. Thaws hurt at lot more when they bring us back to ground zero or happen on top of an already negligible situation. Got a bit o’ base to keep us resilient for a bit.

Although I am not sold on some guy from Arizona saying this is a record start as i have skied better snow in October, I'll let the Monday morning QBs hash it out.

I remember your gracious gift of two Alta tickets at Dibs party in '19, had so much fun skiing there with EC refugees D-Roc, Phall, Jtrans and the locals. You are more than welcome to hang at the base of bush. If conditions warrant I am sure my crew of BC skiers would welcome you to hang with us. I would wait until things improve after the coming torch is done with the snowpack and conditions improve.

according to the spreadsheet Mad Pat inspired me to start keeping a few years ago, Mont Gabriel was my 84th ski area visited. From the top I could see 3 others, one of which i have yet to ski.

I’m glad to have these places so close and that the pass is good at several. finding the south facing terrain was key today after the thaw/freeze.

Pat has a cool trail map of the hill on his blog. All of the terrain on the right is no longer in service. In quebec lift towers get removed when they decommission areas, no clue how that works after seeing rusty chairs at dead hills hanging my whole life.

early day seemed suspect though
thick fog, tough, wet surface.
great crew assembled incl gonnif, harvey, scottski, lemmy caution and another (non mag)
as soon came out a switch went off and the snow became great.
good lap to ridge with harvey. was good with one hike.
first bell to bell. that power nap by fire set me up for last chair.

Plattekill today:

It was foggy at first chair, but like every where else, once the sun came out it was primo. Around 11:30 bucket and Scottski and I were the only takers for a hike over to the double side to ski some ultra low tide natural. When most hills say 10-12" of snow they are reporting base and summit. At Plattekill the low number is Danielle's number and the high number is Laz's number.

Our intention was to ski Ridge, the lowest angle, most shaded stuff we could find.

Halfway over Scott couldn't resist Freefall, and dropped in...



Bucket and I held out for our original objective...



My long term future is tied to Gore, and I love that hill, but there is just no place like Plattekill. For me, it goes way beyond one fixed grip Hall and three ways down.

Great to ski and beer with Scottski, bucket, Goniff and Dean.

Might see a little accumulation to start this AM with light rain in the PM. 74" of natural snow at Smuggs to date is def above average. Tomorrow? we'll survive it, they blew a shit ton of snow since opening and I thought they'd have Madonna open this weekend but it's still closed as of this AM. They've been stingy with uphill policy this season so far. I'm still recovering from a badly sprained ankle after slipping the 5th time in a week back in September on a slimy ramp hauling firewood. Yes, 5 times. Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result = stoopid. I got shanghai'd into getting a CDL last spring so I'm currently hauling plague infect kiddies back and forth to school. Works out nice since I'm done with the AM shift by 8:30 and on the hill by 9 until 12. Then back by one to drop the rugrats off at home. Merry xmas and HNY to the collective.

I'm still recovering from a badly sprained ankle after slipping the 5th time in a week back in September on a slimy ramp hauling firewood. Yes, 5 times. Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result = stoopid. I got shanghai'd into getting a CDL last spring so I'm currently hauling plague infect kiddies back and forth to school. Works out nice since I'm done with the AM shift by 8:30 and on the hill by 9 until 12. Then back by one to drop the rugrats off at home. Merry xmas and HNY to the collective.

Sprained ankles take forever to heal. I'd rather have a broken leg. I know a retired teacher that drives the bus now. He likes it better than his old teaching job.

Get out there today before it’s too late!!!!

As for me, today is recovery. I took a not so nice fall yesterday on the skinny sticks and have what I hope is only a nasty bruise across my flank (I can’t hear ribs grinding so it’s my self diagnosis).

The top was beautiful. The eastern slope was refrozen with some ruts from other skiers which I think I caught a tip in causing me to go down like a sack of potatoes. This is where the Long Trail/AT crosses.

Thanks for the sentiments. The upside of driving the bus is: believe it or not, the kids. Being a childless couple, it's the best of both worlds, Surrounded by wee ones of various ages without the cost, aggravation and realization that they're not that bright and the potential disappointment that follows. Like Carlin said, most kids aren't that special. Closest thing to renting a kid but getting paid instead. Full bennies, bonus to sign on, school paid for training and exams and I get to look forward to all the snow days and days off. 4 mile drive to work sealed the deal. Couple of things that raised my eye brow: No take home homework and nobody ties their laces.
Downside: a bus load of kids and getting up at 4:30AM despite seeing some great sunrises.
