Some days you keep score , some days you just walk around and take it all in. Had two glorious days of the latter last week. Hope you enjoy the pics.

Who has good ways to store a full bag of clubs on in the garage (out of the way). I'm thinking of some sort of wall mount higher on the wall. I've see systems that seem to just use a hook and the bag handle, but that seems like it would put undue stress for a long period in a single point of failure. My other thought is building a 12" shelf to support the bottom of the bag and then maybe a bungie and eye-hooks to strap them to the wall (similar to a golf cart attachment). Anything simpler that I'm missing?

You’re in Montana? Cold weather will dry out your grips and gloves.

Yes, Montana, didn't think of that....might have to store in the guest room closet.

Clubs alone don't take up much space in the back of a closet. Bag/balls/tees can stand a deep freeze.

I've been storing clubs in the below freezing temps of the garge for 50 years and never knew it was wrong. Never had a grip crack that wasn't over 10 years old or hear of anyone that did. Knock yourself out. As I live in a rainforest now, I do wax the metal shafts in my irons to keep the rust away.

For the record. I keep mine in trunk/garage, both bad, but it doesn’t get that cold or hot here in garage

Yes! Any concerns on hanging the weight for months on the bags handle?

Will have to report back. Recent action. Handle/divider seems pretty stout. Have a few backups at the ready if so.

There is free heated storage from your clubs about 200 yards from your house...and the shop will grab them for you in 5 minutes if you need them during the winter for the sim or a trip.

Also I suppose this is worth a post here too. This was last Wednesday...in Montana. It wasn't even cold!

I’ve never heard this and call bullshit. My clubs and gloves have been stored in my garage for 27 years in Utah. And they are perfectly fine.

^^ Agreed. Also who gives a shit about gloves? I must go through close to a dozen per year at least (playing ~100 rounds, plus practice). More importantly you store them between rounds in the packaging you buy them in regardless of climate.

    Fore! Who's playing golf, yo-

I have not played golf in over 40 years, 1981 was the last time I played. I was in my early 20s and I was fairly good at it.

Last month when I was down in central Georgia I played with my brother and his BIL.

I had a great time. Both of them took up golf during Covid, my brother at 70 and his BIL at 66. Neither is serious about it. They meet once a week and they do not keep score. No rules either. If one of them has a good shot, the other compliments on it. If a bad shot, no big deal just drop another ball wherever you want and play it. Turns out that is a relaxing and fun way to play golf.

The course they play is an old southern plantation called Raintree (near Thomaston GA) that fell on hard times back in the 1930s and was turned into a golf course in the 1950s. The golf course itself fell on hard times several years back and it closed after the clubhouse burned down in a grease fire. But it has new owners who are trying to get it back in operation. Clubhouse is in a shipping container, no sand in the traps yet, but the turf is slowly coming back and the price is right, $20 for 18 holes including a cart.

I had a blast and I plan to add golf to my activities list. But I really enjoyed the non-competitive attitude of those guys, and I have my fingers crossed that I meet some like minded players. One of the reasons I quit in my early 20s was the hyper-competitive atmosphere combined with excessive alcohol use made it no fun.

I only keep score if i am scoring well. Once i have a couple blowup holes, it turns into a practice round real quick haha. I am competitive at heart and one of my main playing partners pretty consistently shoots mid-upper 70s from the blues on tough courses... he usually raises my game and i shoot consistently 5+ strokes better when playing with him. Its really fun to be good at things, and so its really fun to shoot well and keep score. That said, its also really important to be able flip the switch on a bad day and enjoy just being out in a manicured garden with friends whacking a ball that goes really fucking far haha.

After about 15 years away from golf, I decided to give it another go last year. Boy has it been ugly. Golf is not at all like riding a bike. After going down many rabbit holes, and taking lessons as well, I’m finally striking the little ball before the big one, and no longer flipping. However my distance is nowhere near as long as it used to be, and my scoring sucks. Getting old sucks.

I bought a membership at the local mini, and joined the seniors club. So I am forced to play by the rules, putt everything out, and count all the strokes and penalties. This is an otherwise easy muni, not that long - except for the fact that there is water on almost every hole. 14 out of 18 of them to be exact. And OB lining the side of about half the holes. Let’s just say it takes a lot of balls to play the way I do. Working on course management.

Anyway, I’ve posted in the past about youtube swing coaches that I found helpful. Just wanted to mention another: Padraig Harrington has his own youtube channel with some great content. And, it’s not like it’s some aspiring teaching pro who can’t play. Here’s a sample that I found helpful:

Good vid. They are all good. I've lost 40 yards with the driver and 20 with the irons in the past 10 years myself. My videos show that my swing is all fkd up. Back swing too quick and long. Down swing is rushed. Swaying instead of turning. Hips all wrong. All faults that are distance robbers that I see a lot of geezer golfers doing. I bought a 1977 edition of the Boy Scout Golf Merit Badge book. Went back to square one. Video sessions show I'm improving. Club head speed is up. Hips are clearing. Now to find a way to bring the swing out on to the course. Good news is that I'll be able to shoot over par to shoot my age.

T-minus 5 weeks til I leave for Scotland with the old man. 8 days of golf festivities. 5 18s, a round a Musselborough Old Links, and a free day to hopefully play the Himalayas putting course in St. Andrews. Dialing in the last few details...working on hitting the new this year driving iron off the tee and bump and runs.

Need to get 5 rounds in prior to roll a few oddly low scores (4.8 and 5.4 diffs) when I caught fire last summer out of my handicap so that I don't get fleeced by my pops and his buddies.

    2024 plan:

Ben Hogan 5 lessons book - check
Harvey Penick's little red book - check
Practice turf and net in garage - check
Golf Fix app on phone to record swings (ugly!) - check
Season pass to local municipal - TBD
Snow to melt off local courses - TBD

I could drive down the hill now to start playing on grass or go to a range, but after seeing video of my (old) swing, I want to work on it in the garage to fix that bent left arm, hip sway, and bob.
Using that app to look in the mirror at my swing crushed my soul. I've been able to get away with horrible mechanics to at least move the ball down the course, but was very inconsistent because of it. I have a feeling things are going to get worse before they get better

Try taking vid of you using what you feel is a 3/4 swing. Guy once asked me how far my SW went. "Full swing, 85-90. My 3/4 swing goes 100-105." I'm still fighting working on that.

Best thing I did was to buy a series of lessons at the PGA Tour Superstore in Austin. They have video, trackman, etc, and send lesson summaries to me via the v1 app.

I had been taking lessons from a pro at my local muni course, but wasn’t making a lot of progress. In retrospect, I think everything he told me was correct, but I just wasn’t improving all that much.

The guy at the Superstore got to the core of the issue right away. One major issue was my posture. I was squatting like a linebacker, when I should have been more like a swimmer poised to dive in the water. The previous pro never mentioned that.

But, of course, golf is much more than golf swing. So I still suck, but maybe not quite so bad.
