The biggest difference will be the pencil each supports. The 10th accepts the second gen pencil that attaches and charges magnetically.

The 9th is the first gen pencil and has to plug into the USBc port and it is clunky; not going to be charging while stowed away in a bag for instance.

Also, the 10 will take the Magic Keyboard and folio, which is very functional as a keyboard, stand, and case.

The 10 is more capable than my 2yr old pro and less than what I paid.

So I'm ready to bite the bullet and get the Pixel 8, BUT I'm confused with the pricing of the carrier one vs the unlocked version. Pixel 8 unlocked is $700. Same thing through Verizon is $800. Is there ANY real reason to go with the carrier version for a $100 premium? Not doing a payment plan or anything so don't need VZ for that.

FWIW I ordered mine unlocked from Google as Verizon was a dumpster fire to order from.

    Mine sure seems fine.

I've not been thrilled with my 7a and I see the 8 is about the same size. Patiently waiting for when they offer me a deal to trade in/upgrade.

Just picked up the 8! Got it in "hazel." FWIW, although this sure as heck wasn't advertised and the Verizon website said my old 3 was ineligible for trade-in (understandably), I went to the Verizon store anyway to see what they would do for me. Anyway, girl there was like "let me see what your account's eligible for" and started doing her thing with her tablet. They ended up giving me $400 off by trading in my 3. I have a month to get everything transferred over at home at my leisure and take my old phone back to them. Basically brought the phone down to $400 through their weirdo number games, but pencils out either way.

She ALSO said I could take home the new Pixel Watch 2 for FREE with the offer, but I actually ended up turning it down since I straight up do not want yet another connected device. Yeah, I know. I'm weird.

Couldn't you just sell the watch? Or was that just another buy NASDAQ moment?

If their terms were that it was free without any fine print- like requiring a sim and cellular service activation as a second device (so only planning to use it on bluetooth) then probably could sell it as you say. If you wanted to spend the time doing a for sale listing or offering it up to friends or strangers and meeting up.

Google Fi has Pixel 7a for $299 and 8 for $399. I have two phones, one I use for work. I need to replace the 3a that I use for work within 3 weeks because the OS is now n-2. It's BYOD because I don't qualify for a company device, yet they want me to have a work profile with Teams, Outlook, etc. I don't put that on my personal use phone because I'm paranoid and don't trust Google to not give work a way to see my personal use, on principle. My personal use phone is a Moto G Stylus 5G 2022 which I didn't pay much for. I can get the 2023 for $99. Either way I am going to waterfall a phone. One issue is size. The Moto is a chunky fucker with the case and I don't want two of them in my pocket. The 3a is nice and svelte. I wouldn't normally be getting a phone right now. I don't really need a better phone. I didn't wake up today thinking I needed to drop $400. The main advantage to me of a Pixel is probably the longer OS update support period, but that's really only a concern if I have the same job and keep using a second device. What's the effective size feel in the pocket of the 7a vs the 8?

@MF you should've taken the watch. It's nice to have the data points when you're exercising, particularly when riding bikes. Phobia over another connected device is kinda silly at this point IMO

Nah. Like Rshea pointed out, there's some fine print associated, ie "free" means making payments and them crediting you for the next couple years, essentially working like a contract. No thanks. Doing that on my phone's enough without piling on another contract to further complicate my bill.

Secondly, it's not a phobia. It's more that I have been purposefully trying to DISCONNECT lately. We're all so connected 24/7 that my mind just needs a break sometimes, and exercising is one of those times. Last thing I want is to get a text/e-mail from work to yank me right back out of that zen moment. If I'm home, I have my phone around. That's connected enough for my taste. Personally, I'm kind of over the constant barrage of society's expectations that they should be able to get a hold of you at any given second. Everybody's out of control with that. Particularly in the professional world whether clients or bosses. Spouses/girlfriends have crazy expectations too these days. No wonder everybody's full of weird social anxieties lately. My wife has the Apple Watch and while it IS pretty slick, it's also annoying at times. That's what's made me decide not to bother with the Pixel watch.

So I'm just about done migrating everything over to my new Pixel, BUT the one last thing missing is the TGR app. When did it disappear from the Play Store? My old 3 still has the app installed and still works fine... mostly.

search the googles for the apk for the app, or maybe search the ask tgr forum, can't recall which one, but I was able to install the app on my new phone just a couple of months ago.

If you can't work out the google search, you can also install "apk extractor" on the old phone to create an apk of any app you want, then transfer that over to the new one. (Who am I kidding? If the google search is too much, no way will the above be manageable.) But anyway, the carrot is the still-uncluttered OG TGR app...

And I should add, that if I can sound this authoritative and capable on this issue, even a chimp can do it. A trunk monkey, perhaps. So I have faith in you, MF.

I could not find it, but I don't use the app either. But if you log into your new phone on your Google android account (GMail address many times), then open the Play Store. Click on the upper right circle in the corner where you profile is. Go to the Manage Apps and device. Click on the Manage option. You will see a pull down for Installed (default) and then an option for Not Installed... Select the Not Installed and that is all the apps you have used with that profile. You maybe able to see the TGR app listed there and just click on the install. Otherwise, maybe do a backup of apps on the old phone (app backup search on Play Store) and then restore from the backup file you created. It would be helpful if you could just do the apps you want and not all the apps on the old phone.

Pixel 8 is a great phone. Was on the 5 for years and this feels like a seamless upgrade. The camera is insane and the UX is top notch. Plus mine came with some free Pixel Buds Pro from Best Buy. I just wish it was a touch smaller, but o well.

Bingo! APK Extractor and sharing directly between the phones wirelessly worked like a champ. I took a look at the links to the websites with the APK but they were pretty sketchy so I bailed. In the end, I felt better about pulling my own.

Hahaha. Thanks for the vote of confidence. Once I was finally able to spend like 5 minutes dicking around with it, I finally got it.

Same here. When I was trying to compare my 3 to the 8 at the store, the one thing I couldn't tell since it was tethered with that retractable cable was just how heavy it is. Between that and the factory case, it's annoyingly chonky. I might have to ditch the case and just go naked with it to get the size back down to what I was expecting with my side by side comparo. I miss the old denim fabric case Google made for the 3. That thing was pretty good. Not the most durable BUT light weight and slim fitting. I hate giant phones and this thing is pushing it. THAT SAID, it's a damn impressive phone for the most part. Battery life is bonkers (well, while it's new at least). Fantastic performance and all the latest Android features are totally tits. Best UI on the market, hands down. It's all about the software experience with these things for sure.

Anyone have experience (or informed opinions) with the Satellite SOS function on the newer model IPhones. I’m carrying and paying annual subscription fees on a Spot for what seems the same functionality, so I could potentially save $ by upgrading from my SE.

No personal experience but there have been some good write-ups and reviews of the differences. The Spot uses Globalstar satellites or Inreach uses Iridium satellite network and allows you 2 way texting as an example even without any cellular towers. How important is marking the trip progress with a touch of a button for others to view also. Do you need outside of the USA, and international coverage?
Some of the issues and differences are discussed here:

Ok, I am about to pull the trigger on an iPhone 14 cyber Monday deal. I have a Pixel 6 that I simply do not like for a variety of reasons. I travel internationally, and using the I-messaging (and text?) without an international plan is enticing (for times I am not using Whattsapp).
Also transferring files, pictures, etc, from user to user seems simpler with the Apple ecosystem.
I am sure this was discussed, (I can’t search the whole thread this minute) but any reasons NOT to get a 14 plus?
Anything I will truly miss about Android?
    TIA
