    Good to hear!

Alta - you mounted forward, are you saying the tails may be more punishing because of that? Do you feel like you have enough tip in front of you, given the large amount of rocker? I recall you like 4frnt renegades, right? I personally like the balance point/stance of that ski for 3D snow, but also prefer more traditional mounts for harder, more 2D snow. Any comments with that perspective?

Rip - curious what other skis you like/have just to get some additional context.

On another note - anyone ski these AND a 184 Mantra 102 or OG Cochise?

Yeah I’m a big fan of progressively mounted chargers. I have the 183 for Alta and the 190 for the bird, both mounted the same. They both feel great to me. The tail is really only punishing when skiing zipper lines in firm conditions. I also have skied the OG Cochise. I prefer the stance, they both slotted in as my firm snow ski. Stance carves way better. Has been excellent in spring conditions recently, potentially taking the spot off the head monster 103 as my favorite spring ski ever. These things absolutely rip. I’m sure they’re fine on the line. I just like my charger skis progressively mounted. Had Cochise and bodacious mounted +1.5 to.

I demo'd the 184cm Mantra 102 and the Stance 96 183cm (along with a bunch of other skis in this category).

The stance 96 was a close second for me. It was very agreeable, seemed like a solid all-rounder. Not quite as stable or damp and chargey as the M102 in crud/chop/icey snow (although caveat - the stance is still chargey, damp, and stable, and I preferred it over all the other skis I tried - Enforcer 94, Mindbender 99ti, rossignol experience 94, kendo). The stance tails were friendlier and the ski was easier in the bumps.

M102 required me to ski more aggressively and with better form to be as nimble as I wanted - but it rewarded that kind of skiing handsomely.

I wish I had tried the stance 102, I think it's a little more chargey than the 96? So may be pretty on par with the M102. I don't think you could go wrong.

Edit: Apparently I was demoing the 2024 Stance 96, which was updated from previous years.

    Thanks guys.

Alta, I also see you on a bunch of other Salomon gear. How do these (190) compare/contrast with a qst 106 in 189, a blank in 186, and an og 186 renegade as a resort quiver?

Might skip the 106 or or Blank depending on carvability of the blank and resort <12" powder performance of the 106.

I haven’t skied the new (white) 106. I really liked my 188 green 106s. Very versatile ski, pretty capable in all conditions. I’m bummed I busted them a few weeks ago. The blank is also a good ski, comes alive the faster you go, as was the case with the 106. Too wide for an everyday ski imo. A HALS renegade is just a completely different beast and my favorite ski of all time, I currently have 3 with bindings and 3 back up pairs. My quiver is pretty ridiculous, but I could see a stance, 106, renegade as a sweet set up for resort skiing. I have my blank set up with cast, as a go anywhere do anything travel ski it flexes pretty soft but can easily charge if you ski it centered and high edge angles. The stance is a firm/spring snow only ski for me.

Thanks, that's helpful. Stance (Low tide and spring), 106 (<12" and bad vis firm days), HALS rens (>12") seems like the play.

Looking at +1 or +2 mounting.

We have the same POV on the rens.. 2 mounted HALS and one backup. Always looking for more.

Me either! I couldn't resist though and bought another pair of the 96s to put in reserve. The new model 96 this season, seems neutered compared to the OG build.

For what it is worth, Ski Essentials has a blurb about the new Stance 102. They seem to be okay with the new iteration.

^^^Watched the video. My key takeaways...

    - lighter, easier, energetic but takes away stability off the top end

    - reduced torsional stiffness, more approachable, easier to turn, easier to get up on edge

    - reduced tail splay, longer turn radii, easy bend

So basically, they built a semi-wide ski adapted for mellow groomers for freeride-wannabe-intermediates...

Conclusion: It's been neutered. Lets move on...

This is what Salomon does to its good skis, every time.

I scored a pair of last year’s 177 102s. I’m going to put MTNs on them. Cause why not.

Not just Salomon, most companies seem to do this.

I don’t think I can blame the companies anymore. They would probably love to make beefstix if the customers were buying them hand over fist

I blame the consumer. Most want pansy stix instead.

Absolutely. But Salomon seems to do it in the worst way. Come out with a bomber ski and then really neuter it in the next cycle, repeatedly. I guess they let their athletes have too much say and then have to back track.

This all sounds pretty good to me. I bet the top end is pretty similar.

Looking for the Stance 102 in the 190cm size at the crazy low prices they were available for a year ago. Any one know of anything out there?
