Absolutely do not intend to volunteer anything about my use, especially because of dealing with an ex. But even though I think I'm stealth, I know I could be discovered, plus other people aren't always stealth (my daughter's adult cousins, for ex). And also, even if not discovered, have to decide whether to lie if my daughter asks me questions directly.

    This discussion is very useful.

Serious question about NARCAN. Does it expire? Unless I go around strapped with it and run into a random in the grocery store, the likelihood at the moment based on the places I go that I will come across someone who needs it seems extremely low. If everyone in my situation buys it up, I'm concerned that I'll be throwing away doses that someone in need could have used. Obviously the flip side is that if everyone has it, then the chance is much higher an overdosing person will get a dose when they need it. I'm not looking at free NARCAN because I definitely want people who are more likely to need it to have it. And as a bleeding heart liberal I would hate to be in a situation where I needed it and didn't have it.

I wouldn't completely lie. I'd just give 'em the old "yeah I've tried it" line. They can interpret that how they want (as noted above they're not stupid), and it allows you to speak to the topic with some credibility if there are questions or concerns.

A couple friends of mine took a completely open approach when their kids became teenagers. They are daily smokers and didn't try to hide it. One of them called it his "medicine." The other just said it's part of who I am, and I'm not going to lie to my kids. I think either approach can work, it just depends on the people involved.

But if they catch you using and you had told them you never did, that wouldn't be good.

Yes it does expire. However, an expired dose is better than nothing if it’s all that’s available. It also shouldn’t be stored in a vehicle due to temp extremes. So not super convenient but one could always tote around a man purse?

I don’t know if you need to be worried about the supply getting all bought up. Where I live there are very few barriers to those in need getting their hands on a kit but YMMV

    1. Shelf life is about 2-3 years. The injectable version is more tolerant of temperature variability, (better to keep in the car.)

    2. Obviously it should be administered as quickly as possible but you have some time, enough to get to your kit.

    3. The non profit and government organizations that are giving this away no questions asked have enough. They'd much rather you have it than sit on a shelf.

This has less to do with having it in case of an emergency and more to do with having a conversion with anyone and everyone about overdoses whether intentional or not. It's likely not to be the addict in the park, more likely your kid or one of his friends who pops a pill thinking it's something else. Or the neighbor boy who mistakenly takes an extra dose after having his wisdom teeth pulled. Or your co worker who's going through a nasty divorce and just needs to escape for a few. You don't want to be the one asking "what if."

The typical advice is not to store in your car but this study may be reassuring to those that do

Thanks. Like I said, it was a serious question, not shenanigans. The take away is I should buy/obtain and throw it in the house somewhere. As I was actually thinking rando about town, not close to home. Which is I am sure a typical mindset. And arguably part of the problem.

Look into it, YMMV and I don't know about VT, but there is most likely a local hospital or state org. that is writing scripts and giving it away for free. In SLC you can get the injectable at the public library.

Have some at the house and know how to use it.

Overdose and narcan administration are relatively new topics for red cross aed/cpr/first aid cert. Glad it’s there.

Pot laced with fentanyl was new to me, and I’m glad my 17yo told me about it.

I've posted about this before but you can smoke pills and weed from the same bowl.

If it's being passed around at a party and someone hits it without a tolerance you can have an overdose.

Danno, of confronted I’d recommend not to lie and try to make something up. Kids know. You may not need to go into detail of course but, well you get it. Your credibility shows her what credibility should be.

Where can I get Narcan again? I’d like to send my daughter back to college with some. Just in case.
My kid is premed with a Neuropsychologist for a mom. She’s not remotely interested in anything hard, I’ve explained how some hard things feel to her and she’s like, nope don’t want that.
She likes edibles on occasion to chill. That’s really it.

She saw the 2+ year detox of me getting off benzodiazepines. Pills and powder pharmaceuticals are evil in this family.

Drugs are a lot different these days.

Lots of fentanyl out there these days. Just found out today a friend of a friend’s 17 year old was found dead one morning a month back. Good family, kid didn’t drink according to my friend, good grades, trace amounts of fentanyl found in his blood.

Another friend is a 5th grade teacher, just had a new training on drugs. Kids order it online, gets delivered like Uber eats from a fast food restaurant, same packaging, sometimes they get it delivered to school. almost always laced with fentanyl.

It’s not the 90s and 00s anymore. My kid is 3 so luckily we’re some years away from any drug talk so I have no advice, but it’s a lot different then when I grew up

    Back on topic:

For new parents, I highly recommend deployment the Dream Feed strategy. Used it on both of ours and had stellar results after a week. I believe we added a second feeding around 3 am as necessary. Better to wake up by your own alarm once a night than all night long.

The baby brezza formula machine is worth is weight in gold. Load it with water and formula and stick a bottle under it. Baby gets fussy and make a bottle with your phone from the other room. Best baby gift we received.

Dream feeds are great, it’s the last feed you drop. That said while you can do a bit to impact sleep; so much of it is the personality of the kid. Some sleep and some DO NOT. We got lucky and both of our girls enjoyed sleeping. Several friends did not and despite doing everything “right” their kids did not.

Shit, that's easy, any Salt Lake County Library. I know Sandy and Draper have them.

If you don't feel like picking them up, LMK, I'll gladly grab a couple of kits for you.

My wife hated the use of the term “feeding” when describing nursing.

Narcan should be available at college campuses

Thank TS! I’ll grab some super soon

Body, yes I know. However I want one in my daughter’s college dorm room where she could get to it easily if an emergency arises. Not just “available on campus”.

Fatherhood anonymous; an open discussion on being a dad.

Got it. They hand them out at my kids campus. Easy access to get and have around. My kid keeps 2 doses.

In terms of parent/kid relationship, providing tnarcan doses to kids to have with them seems like it can lead to a positive conversation and boost of relationship between parents and older kids.
