Been working on this the past month, and took it out for its virgin voyage today. Everything I was hoping for and more - just needs a few more things, but those can wait till next year. My youngest is already talking about how he plans on using it all next summer. Hopefully I can get it out a couple more times before winter sets in.

Dibs and I did...two weeks ago?

It was slow as fuck. Might be changing now but reports I've read say that it's not.

Feels like we are three weeks behind where we should be.

Think it was 2 weeks ago that I worked them pretty good on the Snake right in town on streamers on a Thursday and Friday. It was after the first 4-5 day cool weather system that came through. Then the warm high pressure shut things down.

Gorgeous day. Little fish were active on the surface. Big-ish fish seemed to be chilling in deeper holes.

Was fishing the local and came up on this. Zigged when he shoulda zagged. Those trees/bushes are only thing keeping it out the creek.

earlier this weekend we went to the high country for what will likely be the last time this year - no one else in sight, cold nights, beautiful days, and hungry brookies.

got out with SFB and a non mag buddy yesterday

double up a few times, tripled up once, took a few nice bows home to eat

    great weather & great fishing

Yesterday I got in the last day of fishing before our first valley snow. It was slow for most of it, but I had a big strong rainbow (too bad I forgot the camera) take a purple chubby, and a few whitefish take nymph droppers.

Today there's snow on the ground, and it's 26 degrees out.

Well it's been cold here for the past week, and still waters have been icing up, but yesterday I was looking at the water while crossing the bridge, then walked down by the river and looked some more, and felt like I really needed to go fishing. So today, I bundled up, and peddled my bike down to the fishing access spot, not really expecting anything as the USGS monitoring site above Missoula reported that the water was just above 32 degrees, but the day was gloriously bright and crisp, so I was just looking forward to being on the water.

I read the Grizzly Hackle report before going, which was helpful in suggesting the type of water to focus on, and a plan formed in my mind, which turned out to be a good one, as I caught six rainbows and one whitefish.

I caught a little one on a rainbow warrior nymph, before noticing that fish had started rising. I kept throwing the nymph, and was teased incessantly by risers right in the area I was drifting. This prompted me to switch over to a double dry rig I had in my streamer box, where I dump such things after using them so I can have fits trying to untangle them later when I want something to throw on "quickly". After much cursing, having extricated a hi/vis mahogany parachute dragging an Adams dun from a horrendous snarl of various dropper rigs, I caught a skinny rainbow who liked that Adams.

Then nothing happened for an interminably long time it seemed, whatever they were rising for had played out and the surface was quiet again. I found myself sinking into a bad mood, I forgot my water bottle and was feeling a bit dehydrated, and tired, and the fish weren't biting.....and I was having fits "quickly" extricating a purple chubby with a long tippets already tied to the hook shank from the horrendous snarl of various hopper dropper rigs in my streamer box. After some fumbling though my pack, I located my nymph box, and settled on a red Copper John to dangle.

My bad mood was growing, and I started praying for one more fish so I could go home. Then the chubby disappeared, and the hook-set met that solid feeling a fisherman wants to feel, one that indicates that the fish is going to do some pulling. Then my mood changed again quickly, thanks to this beauty:

At this point I waffled on my plan to go home after catching a third fish. About a half an hour later I caught another nice rainbow, the first of three more fish in about a ten minute span:

The water was beautiful, but the camera did it little justice.

A frosty Point Six loomed in the distance, as I made my way back upstream to my bike, therapy completed, I felt a spring in my step and a song in my heart, another great day on the river.
