I have three bikes running specialized now. S works cross country on two and purgatory Butcher on one. They’ve all worked well so far. Multiple Moab days without blowing a side wall. I think my DHF/ DHR is faster rolling than the purgatory butcher combo. I’ll report back as things progress.

They updated the purgatory for 2023.

Which is a good thing. Haven't tried the new one, but the old one kinda sucked. Had a weird, unpredictable tendency to lose traction in corners. Like a somewhat less bad nevegal.

The new one does look fairly aggressor-ish

They actually just updated the Purgatory tread, but Stucky is just a curmudgeon in bloom.
I think it looks pretty good. I'll probably pick one up once the Purgatory on the rear my "aggressive downcountry" wheel set bites the dust. That paired with a Grid casing Eliminator on the front has me pretty happy.

Also had the Grid Trail and Grid Gravity Eliminator on the back of the bigger bike. A touch more drifty than an Aggressor when you stuff it into a corner, but fun and controllable. Grid Gravity was more weight and stiffness than I needed when running an insert.

Oh wow, they totally changed the Purgatory. I have the old version and actually really like it. I could use some heavier casing as I use it on an enduro bike hahaha. Came from a DHR II which I liked too, but I like the looseness of the Purg.

I guess I just need to try an eliminator…

The sidewalls on the Ground Control Grid T7 felt more supportive and stronger than EXO+ on the same bike. They didn't weep sealant like every Maxxis seems to. Double Downs felt a bit firmer than the Grid Trail sidewall, IMO.

Here’s a contentious topic, is Maxxis tire wobble worse or on par from other brands?

My EXO Dissector was on the verge of losing its cornering knobs but what did it in for me was unacceptable wobble that I could feel while cornering. (I thought my rims were out of true but they were pretty damn even upon further inspection). Deflated, pinched bead to center channel, reinflated, did not remove Tannus insert, wobble still there.
Put on an old EXO Aggressor I had as a spare, with Tannus, wobble was 3x worse on this one! Removed Tannus and remounted. Wobble did not change.
Put on a brand new non-Maxxis tire with Tannus insert, no wobble, any minor tread deviations follow the rim here.
Talked with friend who only uses Maxxis DD, he reported having 3 tires that he wobbled just in process of mounting to tight rims.

How are you installing your insert/tire, in my experience bad wobble is from forcing the bead over the wheel vs taking your time to make sure it’s in the center groove when getting the last bit of the bead over the wheel.

To reiterate in my experience my previous Maxxis tires have been true from the factory. Muscling them when installing inserts have yielded wobble.

Maxxis is worse IME, especially with inserts. I get it frequently, even on DD and DH casing. I warped a good 3-4 Maxxis with Tannus before ditching it. I haven't had any warps on tight rims (no inserts) on Schwalbe Super Trail or Conti Enduro / DH casing, although I've haven't run through as many of them since switching.

Always by hand, levers used for removal only. Wheel over the plastic trash can, as much of the bead in the rim center channel as possible, soapy water on the leftover rim and bead, voile strap one end of the rim to a handle of the trash can, roll the rest of the tire carcass over the rim with the meat of two palms, and a fuck ton of swearing! I could see how the rolling process could stretch a sidewall, but I have yet to see this problem with other brands of tires, that said I’ve only used that Tannus insert with only one non Maxxis tire (the one I just put on today).

The warped Aggressor that I put on had never previously seen an insert. But it was 3 years old / lying in corner of garage.

Is cushcore worth the premium over tannus? I’ve been rolling a tannus in the rear of my big bike for a while and contemplating adding something to the back of my hardtail too. Big bike is a gnarvana and it’s not too rocky here so medium tire plus insert works better than a heavy tire. I like to keep the hardtail more xc trail not enduro but want some more damping in the back tire.
Debating another tannus vs cushcore at all the levels and which to put on which bike.

Personally, I prefer Tannus to CushCore for ride quality, as well as being as light as CC XC but way more substantial.

Maxxis has a great warranty. You fill out the online form and they send you a new tire. I haven’t yet had to send an old one back.

I’m pretty sure all but one of my warped Maxxis was from being a bit too aggressive while installing (I did have one front tire warp after landing a step-down a bit sideways in a hole). Sliding a tire lever along the bead of the tire seems to be the main culprit, so I try not to do that.

I have also had tires from other manufacturers warp. I think there are just a lot of Maxxis out there, so more Maxxis to warp. I doubt their quality or construction is better or worse than other high-end tire brands.

At height of spring wet season I switched to a DD MG DHF on the status. I’m pretty addicted to the grip, it’s kind been relevatory. But now that things have dried up, it’s piggy. I’m just wondering of the tire players - who’s soft / grippiest compound has a bit less resistance? Any thing out there that gives up maybe 15% of the grip for 15% better roll, would just losing thr DD casing (although EXo+\MG leaves only the assegai) make a big difference in the draggy feel? I realize some of this is just par for the course when you get to these soft compounds so yeah….Ideally looking to not have to change tires because I’m lazy
