For what it's worth, I had a coaching job that was hourly and involved a fair bit of driving to events. Policy was that we didn't get paid for travel time, which I found to be contrary to federal regulations; it took all of two emails before they changed the policy.

Either no one had ever asked the question, or they knew they were breaking the rules and hoping not to get caught. Neither would surprise me.

But I'd suggest that, as long as you do it politely ("hey, I thought we were supposed to get paid for all time we worked according to (insert DOL link); am I not clocking out at the right time?") and preferably in writing, you may have a chance to get the behavior fixed without nuking your bridges.

Aren’t flight attendants and pilots only paid while “in the air” (I think that usually means from the point the parking brake is disengaged to the point it is re-engaged).

Oh and how many folks give a gratuity to their flight attendants? Tipping is fucked.

If you're angry about business owners who sell you a product and then ask you to pitch in for the "expense" of people to serve you the product, vote for living wages, join unions, don't cross picket lines, and slash scabs' tires (in Minecraft).

I had a retail job in a ski town, small two shop business, where the owner said he'd only pay for the hours the store was open to the public, but I was expected to show up early to open, and stay after to clean the store and count the register, where I wouldn't be paid. Job was $8.50/hr for a full time job with no benefits, housing, or even a ski pass. There was no clock. I kept tally of the hours. When the owner screwed with my schedule I told him he was required to pay. He fired me on the spot. Being 21 I didn't take it to the labor department. I just went and skied and got a different job that paid way more.

    Why wasn't anyone tipping me???

^^^ Wrong era, where was your tip jar?
I have been in this State for 30 years and I am willing to admit that I am part of the problem.

The term you want to research is De Minimus Time. It's pretty cut and dry these days.

And no, you don't go scortch earthe email from the jump. You print out a couple of pages and ask to speak with the manager. You threaten with the email and that's you'll quit if it isn't resolved.

    Be principled, understand leverage.

Oh...rules are different for those under an employment contract.

Depends on what the various unions have negotiated with their employers, but yeah for the most part the clock starts when the parking brake is released. And most airlines have a 'no accepting tips' clause in the crews' contracts.

When I was a new hire at my first regional job, I was working with one of the union negotiators who dropped this: "We're doing five flights today. If you took your hat, walked down the aisle and asked each passenger for a dollar tip, you'd make more than what this company pays" ($1 x 250)

    "thanks for reminding me..."

A lot of nurses don't get paid for the time spent signing out their patients to the next shift or for breaks and lunch, whether they took the breaks and ate lunch or not.

I worked in an on mountain ski shop, and we never got tips either (both wrong era, and cheap ass tourons/no actual regulars). Later, I worked at a small/cool guitar store in a major city. No cash tips, but lots of folks arrived with beer. We'd usually just drink it right there and then with whomever brought it. Famous people would occasionally drop by too, so that was kinda cool.

Love that this thread started as some entitled bourgeois elitist complaining that workers ask for money to survive and has become a bunch of sharing how much the hourly worker gives a little extra here and there (always in the employer's favor).

They’re the same thing. Employers working the angles to get away with paying their employees less.

That's the thing about threads--you never know where they'll wind up. And it does seem like wage theft is a more important issue than feeling guilty because a computer asks you for a tip, And how long will it be before AI starts asking for tips, and then demanding them or else. Pretty soon computers will have their own bank accounts, credit cards, and Amazon accounts.

BTW Doctors sometimes get tips. DeBakey got a Ferrari from some sheik. The most I ever got was tamales at xmas. And an 18 year old that I screwed up on as a resident gave me a pen and pencil set because HE felt bad for ME.

Funny thing is the employees are being blamed for the screen that comes up asking for a tip when that's set up by the owner of the cafe or ice cream shop or whatever. The employer is literally asking you to pay for his/her employees so he/she doesn't have to.

    give it up

americans want the best cheapest price out there the lowest fucking price nothing less all the time every day
so you give them the low price then stick it in the rear on the way out the door

it's the consumers fault because they have no concern for the real cost of doing business
