^^ I didn't know that. Cool. I pass Nikola Tesla's lab a few times a year. It kinda makes (what's left of) my hair stand on end

It's an Upstate of Mind store https://www.empirestatetrailoutfitters.com/shop

In the early 60s it was dug out big enough for 200 kids plus staff and was kept stocked into the 70s when I was there (the school closed in 1976). There were stacks of MRE's, 55 gallon drums of fresh water and a stack of car batteries wired to floodlights. It was kinda spooky.
Back when they dismantled a large number of the 1950's and 1960's bomb shelters (I think it was in the 1990's) and they were throwing out the stored drums and supplies from the schools, government buildings like city halls, and churches etc., we had a group bomb shelter party. Took a few of the barrels and opened them up and checked out exactly what they thought would be needed to survive. Toilet paper, water purification and treatment- Iodine tablets, some medical stuff like bandages and first aid type of stuff, and then the canisters with some old C-Ration military type packaged foods.

No MRE type as they had no way to do the MRE heating and "cooking" of the food...

I was lapping Onondaga county today too.

dropped the kid off at the state fairgrounds for a volleyball tournament, then took a trip down memory lane. My uncle lived in Camillus and we used to visit frequently when I was young.

He's not with us anymore; but I try to pay my respects whenever I have time.

some serious turf management by these Onondaga county boys

random sighting just down howlett hill road.
    note proper use of tarp

the water tower behind my uncle's house was a great spot for shenanigans

stuck behind an entirely practical yet semi-aggressive TOY

    more electrical history in Elbridge

My first Mountain Bike race was there, it was so fun and hard. My dog actually won our category.

That’s a pretty “tall” frame to begin with.

    (Based on head tube height).

In case you were wondering, the geographical center of the state is 6102 Rocks Road in Munnsville.

I'm 6'3" with a 34" inseam. It's a large bike and doesn't feel small to me. But yeah, that's a lot of seatpost.

Somebody suggest a good side trip off the Thruway/Northway between Rockland County and Plattsburgh- not too far off the exit and not too time consuming and something I haven’t done already please.

What haven't you already done? IOW where are the gaps in your life experiences? I'm sure we can fill some holes for you in that 370 mile long slice of Upstate.

Isn't the oldest fossil forest on the continent somewhere near Saugerties? That might be a worthy time sink.

Interesting. That might be worth checking out. I don’t think this is the place (seems like I need to look around Gilboa) but the article caught my eye cause the writer says “ upper New York”. I guess “upstate” isn’t in the style book?

    Paradox brewery?
jump off northway at exit 28, back on at exit 29

Henry Hudson park near Ravenna is a nice little spot. We go fishing where the Vlomankill dumps into the river. There's a kayak launch there.

    Lol

I think the old Otis elevating railway is still accessible and it's not far off exit 20 or 21 https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otis_Elevating_Railway I crossed it on Bogart Rd and had no idea what it was, I was driving the road because it had a cool name

Yeah I just looked at the map. Where Bogart crosses Otis Rd is the bottom of the old line. The top is the North Lake Picnic Area. The line is pretty accessible from the top. Looks like a nice place for a safety meeting.
