Consider the source. Now maybe if Fred had coined the term I might pay attention.

I was in the Upstate the other weekend driving thru Washington County and needed to turn around. Never thought I would have second thoughts just pulling into a driveway backing up and heading back out on the road, but the thought of that poor girl getting shot by that kook in Hebron, made me drive down the road and turn around at a business.

It dawned on my why I'm glad I no longer own place in SW VT because the same kooks are there who are in Washington County. In the 20 yrs I owned a place up there the following happened within ~20 miles:
    1) Some kid got shot on a dirt road and they never found the killer
    2) Some woman ran over her ex lover girlfriend with her truck (on purpose)
    3) Guy down the road shot and killed my neighbors dog because he wandered onto his property
    4) A gun nut started a miltia camp and was recruiting freedom fighters.
    5) Somebody in town had a tortiose, had a dispute with a neighbor and the neighbor shot the tortoise.

I'm sure even more shit happened that I'm not aware of. It's like the goddamn Florida of the north up there.

WTF is wrong with people that their first reaction to any sort of trespass is to shoot to kill?

Down here in the big city we've got a whole ad campaign aimed at the urban equivalent to these people about how you need to use your words first to solve perceived slights or conflicts, not your gun.

    We're fucked.

Exactly. This may only get worse as more elderly gun owners become senile and paranoid.

I regularly drive a mile or more out of my way just so I don't pull into driveways to turn around. If there's no good place I wait until an open straightaway but never a private driveway anymore.

    My father-in-law is this person.

He's been shooting at annoyances for years and now that they've relocated to Florida permanently it's given me one more reason to never see them.

You bring up a point that's got me thinking, how many shootings you figure a place full of ageing geezers like The Villages has? It's gotta be a ton, right?

That whole place seems like hell on earth to me. A city full of drug-riddled and early-onset dementia boomers with guns and a general anger at the outside world.

Notwithstanding the heroin and the corrupt cops, Fletch couldn't be any more not Upstate.

Thank god the crimes in Westchester County are so much more reasonable and sane. You must feel safe now that you've pulled out of such a dangerous place like Vermont.

Nice try but I'm not in Westchester dummy. I've lived in my town for 25 years, and nobody has shot anyone, or their dog since I've been here. I know everyone on my street by name and nobody has No Trespassing signs plastered all over their trees and driveways. Maybe that will change now that gun owners are becoming senile? Idk.

Holy shit, this just showed up on my local crowdsourced ATL news feed.

MARTA trains are born in the Upstates? It’s gotta be a sign.

Keep trying. My town has 1/3 of the entire population of Rutland County. They don't shoot neighbor's pets here.
